Va'ynna is sitting in a booth somewhat away from the bar, not working for the time being. She's wearing her red dress that should be familiar. On the table before her is a nearly empty plate with some remaining pieces of salad, and an empty glass.
#Miner'sRespite – December 8, 2013
Jason enters the Respite wearing his typical blue-and-white hardsuit. As soon as he spots Va'ynna, he makes a bee line towards her booth and drops a datapad onto the table, slightly harder than intended, without bothering to first check whether or not she'd like some company. "Hey, V." he says, "Gonna grab a drink real quick, need anything while I'm up there?"
Kim steps into the Respite and glances around briefly for a moment before moving up towards the bar. She's wearing very simple clothes with her hair set in a standard braid. She briskly moves towards the bar and parks herself down on one of the barstools. She waves towards the bartender when she believes he's looking in her direction and waits.
Va'ynna starts at the sound of the datapad's clack against the table, raising her brows as she looks towards the human. Her expression softens as she sees Jason. "Hey," she says with a little smile. "Yes, please. Just get me something light."
Jason nods, "Ryncol it is." he jokes, "I don't wanna catch you snooping through my shit when I get back!" he adds, clearly still joking as he points towards his datapad, "Top secret stuff in there." He gives a lopsided grin and takes a few steps towards the bar before turning back and adding, "Oh, and porn!" loudly and shamelessly, "Lots of porn."
Va'ynna puts her hands on her lap, and nods. "Okay... maybe," she says. "Can't promise anything." Her tone does imply she's joking.
Jason reaches the bar and leans against the counter, putting a hand up and shouting loudly towards the bartender to get his attention. Once he believes he has it, he gives a quick look around at the other patrons, his eyes coming to a rest on a familiar face. "Tess?" he asks, leaning further forward over the counter to get a better look past the man seated beside him, "Tessa!?" he shouts, "Holy shit, what are you doing out here?"
Kim notices the patron coming up to the bar several seconds beforehand, but she hadn't realized who it was until he screamed her name. She visibly jumps and nearly falls over backwards from surprise. After a moment, she takes a deep breath and glances around a second time to see how much attention the display had gained them. She keeps her voice fairly low for the moment. "Hey... weren't you on Illium? What are you doing here?"
Va'ynna eyes the datapads with curiosity for a moment before turning her gaze to watch the bar as she waits for Jason to come back. She's too far from the bar to discern what's being said between the two there, however.
Jason continues speaking around the man beside him, rather than walking over to Tessa, making the man visibly frustrated and uncomfortable, "Shit... It's been some time since Illium." he says and quickly spits out his order to the approaching bartender, returning his attention right back to Tessa without a second thought, "It's a long story. I'm sitting with a friend of mine, come join us." he says, jerking a thumb in Va'ynna's general direction.
Kim nods gently and puts an arm on the table. Her voice is still fairly low, but just loud enough to be heard. "Yeah, sure. Just let me finish something first." The arm on the table turns into a raised point towards the bartender currently doing stuff with his back to her. "Got to find work before I start having to live like a bum."
Jason gives her a nod and collects his drinks as they're set in front of him. "Take your time, we'll be right over there." he says. Turning to leave, much to the man beside him's pleasure, he shouts back towards the woman, "It's good to see you again, Tess."
Va'ynna looks at Jason, sitting still in her seat. The datapads haven't moved an inch, despite her occasional curious glances.
Kim sighs and shakes her head in disbelief, then turns her attention back towards the bartender. Once she gains his attention, she begins asking him about possible jobs for several moments.
Jason returns to the table and sets a beer in front of Va'ynna. He places his own drink across from her and takes a seat. "Been a few days since I've seen you." he says, taking a quick sip of his rum and coke, "Did I miss anything?"
Bartender ponders the question for a moment. "I'm sorry, ma'am," he answers her inquiry. "The Miner's Respite is fully staffed at the moment."
Va'ynna smiles and places her hands back on the table. "You have," she replies, sounding a little cheerful. "I've got a job at the bar here. I'm still in training, but I'm paid enough to eat." She picks up the beer glass, "And thanks."
Kim sighs and closes her eyes for a moment. "Alright, can I at least put an application in in case you get an opening?"
Jason sets his glass down and wipes at the table to clear away any crumbs, something he probably should have done before setting down the datapad. "Here?" he asks enthusiastically, tapping the table with his index finger, "You got a job here? That's amazing! How are you liking it?"
Bartender nods. "Sure," he says as he reaches for a small card from beneath counter and places it before Kim. It has the necessary contact information for the Respite. "Just send it to the address there." Another patron signals for service. "Need anything else?"
Va'ynna grins for a moment. "Yeah, and I like it," she says. "I've only gotten the easy shifts at the bar, though, so I'll probably have a different opinion soon enough."
Jason shakes his head, "Nah. You're gonna love it when it's busy, trust me. The people around here-..." he says, pausing momentarily and glancing around at the other patrons in the Respite, "...They're going to be throwing their credits at you. You're gonna make a killing off tips."
Kim nods gently and glances at the drinks in the back. "Can I get an ale, please?" She gives a smile and slightly tilts her head.
Va'ynna tilts her head. "They will?" she asks. "If that's true, it might make up for people like the woman I met when I first got here." She glances at the datapads once after speaking.
Bartender nods. "Coming right up," he says before going to back and finding the bottle. He brings it back to the counter, finds a glass and pours it. Without any further ado, he places the bottle underneath the counter temporarily and goes on to serve the next customer. The ale's human, but made of Aitian ingredients.
Jason nods and slides a datapad in front of him, glancing down at it for a moment. "Of course they will. You show up in one of those dresses of yours and it'll be all eyes on you." he says, going quiet for a short moment, raising an eyebrow before he continues, "Does this mean you can hook me up with free booze?"
Va'ynna averts her gaze, looking a little bit thoughful. "Um," she begins. "I don't think that's my call to make." She looks at him with an apologetic smile. "Sorry."
Kim thanks the bartender and grabs the drink, then looks around for Jason. After spotting him in one of the booths with another patron, she strolls over and places her drink down, then sits down next to Jason. She grins softly at the asari before taking a small sip of the drink.
Jason sighs and gives a shrug. "That would be incredible..." he says, sounding genuinely saddened by the news. He glances at Tessa as she approaches and gestures towards her with a hand, "This is a friend of mine, V. She's going to be joining us." he says. "Tess, this is Va-..." he begins, but quickly gives up on pronouncing the asari's name, "...This is V. V, this is Tess, we go back some time." he continues, "Crazy... You showing up here, I mean. First Tarlon, now you."
Va'ynna returns the smile before placing the beer glass back on the table, sitting still for a second before hesitantly extending a hand across the table. "It's Va'ynna," she says. "Nice to meet you, Tess."
Kim reaches across and grasps the asari's hand firmly before giving it a shake. "To you as well, V-...V-...Vaina? Ah, I'll probably just call you V from now on as well. Easier that way."
Jason pokes at the datapad in front of him a few times, but quickly gives up. "So what brought you here, Tess? You left Illium so abruptly. We all expected you to come back but you just... Didn't."
Va'ynna tilts her head then shrugs lightly. "Uh, okay," she says with a small amused smile, but keeps quiet as the other two talks
Kim takes a deep breath and leans back. "I guess that's fair, considering I never told you guys anything about me..." She closes her eyes and thinks for a moment, but then opens her eyes and shakes her head. "No, not here. Can't be too careful."
Jason raises an eyebrow, but shrugs it off, turning his attention back to the datapad. "I'm not gonna pry." he says, idly reading over the screen as he speaks, "Why you left is your business, Tess. It's good to see you again, though. You mentioned something about a job? How'd that go?"
Va'ynna tilts her head a little, knowing that's not an easy problem out here. "It took me a while before I found a job," she says, speaking up. "So, um, good luck."
Jason remains quiet for a moment, reading over a bit of information before speaking, "We just managed to get a few contracts." he says. "Which is why I haven't been here for a few days." he adds, looking at Va'ynna as he does, "Just a few security gigs right now, but it's a good sign. We're looking to sign on a few reliable people. Like I said, it's all pretty quiet work at the moment, but if you're desperate for work, Tess..." he shrugs.
Kim glances over to Jason and nods gently as the message sinks into her brain. "Sounds like fighting again could be fun. Maybe I'll have to get new limbs grafted on this time, but that's a small price to pay for some fun." She takes a third drink from her glass, clearly unconcerned as to the nature of her joke just a second before.
Va'ynna raises a brow as she considers what the oher woman said. "New... limbs?" she asks with a confused tilt of her head.
Jason puts a hand up defensively, "Don't get your hopes up. Like I said, all we have right now is a few security contracts. You're not likely to lose an arm patroling a docking station." he chuckles, "But work is work. Hopefully we'll pick up some better paying contracts in time." He turns his attention to Va'ynna, "And I meant what I said, V. If things take a turn for the worse, or you just realize this isn't the right job for you... You've got something to fall back on. I'll find something for you to do around the office." he says, his lopsided grin returning, "Even though I'd probably just have ya doing the same thing there as you do here... Making me drinks."
Va'ynna brings a hand up to cover her mouth as a faint giggle escapes her, but she remains quiet for a few seconds, pondering her response. "I... thank you," she says with a genuine smile, reaching for her glass. "It means a lot... that you're willing to help me out." She brings her glass up and takes a long sip of it.
Kim grins softly and raises her glass slightly in a mock toast. "To possibly getting work that will most likely result in requiring new limbs!" She takes a quick swig and swallows before continuing. "But anyway, if you really need people around the office and the situation ends up changing... I'm interested in low key jobs."
Jason gives Va'ynna a shrug, "Not a problem. Besides, it wouldn't be a one way deal anyway. You'd be helping me out too." he says with a smile. After a moment, he turns his attention to Tess "We'll be needing a few more hands on-deck at the office, but for now we're mainly looking to employ a few people who know their way around a weapon. You handled yourself pretty well when we last worked together... Like I said, it's small stuff right now, but give it a consideration." he says, fishing into a compartment on his hardsuit and sliding a small business card for 'Redrock Agency' across the table to her.
Va'ynna smiles, thinking about it. "What would I be heping you with, exactly?" she asks, curiosuly. "Other than bringing you drinks, of course." A small smirk follows before she sips her beer; grimacing a little as she haven't had many of those yet.
Jason shrugs. "You'd... Uhh-... File papers? Call... People? Read-..." He holds up a datapad, "...Read this nonsense? Look, I have no fucking idea. You'd be working mainly with the boss-lady. I don't handle much of the behind the scenes business. Just when she makes me."
Kim winks towards Jason. "I can handle myself in a fight, but I can learn how to handle myself in an office too. You won't need to worry about finding me a place anywhere, I'd bet."
Va'ynna nods a few times, and eyes the datapad with some interest. "Um, okay," she says. "I think I can do all of that." She glances at her glass for a moment before looking at Jason again. "I don't think I've met this 'boss-lady', though. What's she like?"
Jason raises an eyebrow at Tess, "Is that so? Put together a resume when you get the chance and send it my way. I've seen you in action, so it's not going to affect your chances one way or another. You want a spot, you've got it. But we're trying to keep everything clean, so it's nice to have records." He takes a sip of his drink and turns to address Va'ynna's question. "What is Linda like?" he asks, leaning his head back and pondering the question for a moment before finally answering. "Well... Think of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle person you've ever met. An absolute delight to be around. Someone that brightens the entire room when she walks in. Linda is the exact opposite of that if you added a fully automatic weapon."
Va'ynna seems thoughtful for a moment, then raises her brows, nearly staring, as the last part caught her off guard. "Oh...," she begins. "I... uh, I wonder if that's a woman I'd see myself working for." She sips her beer again. "Is she really like that?"
Jason tilts his head to the side, "Eh... She has her good days and her bad days." he says, "But she's a good person. I wouldn't have stood by her this long if she wasn't. She might not be the friendliest, but her heart is in the right place."
Kim laughs and drains the rest of her drink. "Sounds like my kind of person. Regardless of whether we end up as coworkers or not, I'd still like to meet her. Sounds like a hoot."
Jason shifts in his seat and takes another drink from his glass. "You didn't get the chance to meet her back on Illium or Omega? Thought you two met..." he says, giving a shrug, "So much was going on back then... Well, if you had met her, you certainly wouldn't forget her." he adds with a chuckle.
Kim thinks for a moment. "Hm... It's possible. A lot has happened since then, so all those memories kind of blended together. You stuck out in my mind mainly because you were the one who carried me to the hospital." The last part was accompanied with a wink.
Va'ynna | "I'd like to meet her too," she says before her omni-tool interrupts her and she sighs. "Well, it's back to work for me," she says. "I won't be at the bar, though, so I'll see you two around." She downs the rest of her glass (was about a third left) before standing up.
Kim waves to the asari with a small smile. "Nice to meet you. I hope we speak again," she states with another wink.
Va'ynna picks up her other glass and plate before nodding. She walks out of the booth and turns towards them. "Bye," she says before making her way over to an through the door behind the bar.
Jason gives the asari a wave as she leaves. "But yeah..." he says, turning back to Tess, "Things were a mess back then, and they only got worse after you left. But things are turning around now." he smiles, nodding to himself, "Finally."
Kim nods and looks over towards Jason in return, giving a small but slightly strained smile. "Glad to hear... I wish I could say the same." She sighs. "I can't go into it at all here, but my situation is... complicated. For now, could you call me Kim instead? I might have been too careless before."
Jason raises an eyebrow, looking slightly confused. "Kim? Wh-... Shit, sorry. If I'd have known I wouldn't-... Sorry." he says as he realizes she's trying to remain incognito. He gives the bar a glance, a bit more self aware, "Is someone looking for you?"
Kim shakes her head and raises her hand up to tell him to stop, a sudden serious gaze in her face. Any sign of her former carefree personality was completely gone at this point."Don't. What's done is done, so stop worrying about it." She lowers her hand and glances out, then moves to the other side of the booth in order to get a better view of the rest of the bar. After making sure she could speak without being heard directly, she begins again. "You could say I'm an... object of interest. In slightly less vague terms, a political inconvenience. I thought that time would stop them from hunting me, but apparently I was wrong."
Jason leans back in his seat, but keeps his voice down as he speaks, "Are you safe here?" he asks, pushing the datapad aside, happy to find an excuse to put off working.
Kim shrugs. "I don't think I'm safe anywhere, but it's been a long time. You'd probably be surprised at the amount of countermeasures I've taken." She grins grimly and leans forward, clearly not wanting this part to be overheard in any circumstances. "But... I took a huge risk. There's every chance that I'll be gone by next week, so don't get too used to me being around, okay?"
Jason stares at the woman for a moment, "Do what you have to do to keep yourself safe..." he says, "But don't hesitate to ask for help. If I can help you in any way, I'll do what I can."
Kim gives an unworried smile. "Best case scenario, the only thing I'll ever have to ask for is your understanding." She then returns to leaning straight up and claps her hands softly. Her face immediately softens back to what it was before this conversation had taken place. Her voice becomes brighter as well. "Now, what have you been up to the past however-many months it has been? How many different women have you shared a bed with?"
Jason is a bit taken aback by her sudden shift in tone, and her new line of questioning. Deciding not to press the previous issue, he reaches for his drink and takes a long sip from it. "I-... Uhh... Been with Linda for a while now. Got out of this line of work for a bit. It's a long story... A job went south, put her in the hospital. It was touch and go for the first few months, but she pulled through." he says, nodding to himself, "We spent some time on Earth during her recovery, but at the end of the day, this is where I belong." He gives a look around the bar, "Out here in the Terminus."
Kim nods as if the explanation was the most natural thing in the world. "You too, eh? Only stayed on the Citadel for a couple years after I started being hunted... felt right at home out in the Terminus Systems myself. At least, as at home as you can get with a daily dose of predictable men and brainless thugs to deal with every day." She laughs softly and continues with, "But I digress. If I had no limits, I'd probably stay around here somewhere anyway. I don't think I can live without the danger anymore." She raises her empty glass for a toast. "To the Terminus!"
Jason nods, his lopsided grin returning as he raises his glass and taps it lightly against Tess' glass before taking a large swig. "It's an entirely different life out here. Back on Earth, everything felt so routine. So... Planned. I knew how my day would play it before I got out of bed." he says, shaking his head, "I couldn't handle a life that, you know? Didn't even feel like living. Out here, it's a minute at a time because you never know what the next will bring. And there's a chance at doing some real good."
Kim laughs and pretends to take a drink from her empty glass before slamming it down on the table. "Can't say I agree completely with your interpretation, but I can't argue with the conclusion. There's no purpose in living if you're guaranteed to have a peaceful life free from any kind of real thrill," she states with an increasingly loud voice. She quickly tones it down. "But that said, I wouldn't mind dancing again." She activates her omni-tool and glances down at it. "Oh, Elise needs me for something. Sorry for cutting this short." She presses several buttons on the omni-tool. "Here's my updated omni-tool information. If you need me for anything...," she states with an unnecessary wink, "...then now you know how to get hold of me."
slides to the end of the booth and stands up with a quick stretch. "Later, Jason. Don't stay so long you become part of the scenery."
Jason pokes at his omni-tool, tapping at a few buttons once the interface appears before allowing it to vanish once again. "Good to have you around again, T-... Kim." he says, "Try to stay out of trouble." he adds with a smirk, "I'll see you around."
Kim winks one more time. With a final "can't promise that," she makes her way out of the bar with her empty glass forgotten.
