#Miner'sRespite – July 27, 2015
Kim steps into the Respite and glances around briefly. She's in her standard garb with her hair in the typical braid. With a small sigh at the lack of the person she's looking for, she eyes for an empty booth away from any other patrons and quickly steps over to sit down on the far end. She activates her omni-tool to look busy, but otherwise she's keeping an eye square on the door.
Jason takes the stairs two at a time. Dressed in a pair of black fatigues, boots, and a white t-shirt with one of the sleeves clipped shut where his arm should be, he takes a few moments to head over to the bar and order a couple of drinks. After a short exchange with Va'ynna, he spends the next minute or so trying to tuck one drink into the crook of his elbow so he can carry them
both, but once realizing it's a battle he can't win, he gives in and asks for a tray. With that dragon defeated, he begins scanning the room for a booth to plop down in but makes a sharp detour over to Kim once he spots her. "Rise from the grave!" he says with a smirk as he approaches her table.
Kim raises her hand in greeting to Jason as he approaches her, then segues the motion to indicate the other end of the booth. She then fiddles with her omni-tool for another split second and it fades from view. She smiles softly and leans back with her arms flat on the table.
"Yeah, I've had some... difficulties. How have you been lately? I heard from Va'ynna that there's been a problem with your last job."
Kim glances down towards Jason's missing arm for a split second as she speaks, with her brow slightly furrowing. ==
Jason sets the tray down and reaches for the ale atop it. "You could've given me a hand with this." he says, his smirk widening a bit as he sets the drink in front of her and slides into the indicated seat, "Suppose that's one good thing about losing a limb. It comes with a lot of bad jokes." he sighs. Up close it's easy to spot the dark rings around his eyes and a few days-worth
Kim leans forward as Jason speaks and shakes her head at the joke. As she begins to speak, she absently reaches for the other drink and moves it in front of her.
Jason reaches for his own drink and takes a quick sip before setting it off to the side. He takes a glance around the room quickly, to make sure no other Redrock employees are nearby. Once confident that nobody might overhear him, he leans forward a bit, setting his elbow against the table. "I'm trying to keep a lid on this for the most part," he begins, "I don't know how much you
know about that last job, but it was them." He glares at Kim for a moment and sighs loudly, "The sick fucks behind all that Exogeni bullshit. We were trying to put an end to all of it. I don't know what happened, but they-... they got Vasquez. Whatever they did to her-..." he glances down at where his missing limb should be, "...well she didn't seem to have much trouble putting a
Kim takes a deep breath and absently takes a small sip from the glass as she thinks. She drums her fingers on the table for a moment, but then stops as she begins speaking.
"Damn it... So you're saying that Vasquez has gone rogue? Do we have any idea where she might be or what she's up to?"
Jason furrows his brow and shakes his head. He looks somewhat offended at the insinuation that Vasquez may betray them, but his face quickly softens.
No... Whatever she did, she didn't have any choice. You've seen what they can do to people. They... change them. Which is why it's important we find her as soon as possible and fix whatever's wrong with her. The only others that know about this is Ilyna, Tarlon, and Halisi. Last thing I need is people telling me this is a lost cause. We will find her.
Kim nods and extends the same arm as the one Jason still has with a bigger smile forming on her face, although her eyes don't quite match it.
"Of course. Anything I can help with, let me know. I can say that it's not very likely I'll vanish for this long again."
Kim stops briefly before speaking again. "I know how much both she and Redrock means to you. I don't want either to be just a memory either." ==
Jason gives a couple nods, lowering his gaze to the table as he speaks. "That means a lot to me, KIm. We also lost Vaden. Monroe is in a similar condition as me." he continues, patting the shoulder where his arm no longer begins, "Leah can't walk. Most of our new hires didn't make it back. Hell, even Garr barely made it out of that place. Medical bills are piling on and we're hurting
for new employees. I took out a loan, but I'm not sure how long it's going to keep the company afloat. I've got no leads and all I can think to do is reach out to an information broker and see if we can get any information on any ships that passed through nearby comm buoys. I know-..." he glances back up at Kim and bites his lip for a moment before finishing his sentence, "...I know
Kim nods and pulls her arm back to grasp the glass, but her smile turns into a frown that deepens as Jason keeps speaking. Her eyebrows furrow and she glances around briefly before responding.
Kim trails off and sighs loudly with another shake of her head. "Damn it, Jason. How did we fall so far?" ==
Skythix walked down the steps after getting settled into her room back to the bar. Still clad in her leather vest, tight black pants, and simple combat boots, she let out a sigh and figured it best to start as soon as possible. She looked around and was thankful that the quarian from earlier was gone. She began her search through the room for the people that she got names for but ran
into a problem; all the damn humans looked alike to her. It didn't help trying to find someone in a crowded bar was hard enough even when you knew what they looked like. She spotted one human who was missing an arm which stood out the most to her. She doubted why a human with a missing limb would work for a security company but maybe he knew the local people. She approached cautiously
to the edge of the table in the booth and cleared her throat. "Excuse me. I'm trying to find a Briggs or a Jason." Shit, she forgot the other names. "Would you be able to point me in a good direction?" She did her best to put on a happy face even if she didn't feel it.
Jason nods slowly. "It was bad, Kim. Just a long string of bad luck-..." he sighs, "...maybe bad management. Maybe this is my fault. It's my job to keep them safe out there...." he begins, but quickly quiets down as the turian approaches and straightens up his posture. "Oh... uhh... Hi. Yeah, I know 'em." he begins, shooting a somewhat concerned look over to Kim. "What to you need
Kim jumps slightly at the extra voice from the end of the table, but quickly calms down after a deep breath. She forces a soft smile onto her face and gives herself a convenient excuse to not speak up right away, although she keeps her eyes glued onto the Turian's face for the moment. ==
Skythix looked between the two. She only caught the tail end of what the other man was saying but it didn't sound great. "I got word from someone that they work for Redrock and I was hoping to get more information from one of them." She crossed her arms and cocked her hip to the side. These two didn't seem to know much. Better to play it safe to make sure they weren't trying to screw
Jason gives a quick nod. "So this is about Red Rock? I might be able to help you out. What kind of information are you looking for?" he asks, his curiosity piqued.
Skythix straightened up her stance. So maybe they did know something? "I'm new on this rock and I've been looking for work. I hear Red Rock is the best firm for that here. I want to know if my skills can work well for them or if I should bother somewhere more fitting." Her eyes narrowed slightly as if challenging them to make an offer.
Kim listens to the exchange with her eyes alternating between the two as they speak, but glances over to Jason after the turian finishes speaking. She nods slightly if he looks back towards her, but either way she places her glass down and looks back towards the Turian with the same intent gaze once he begins to speak. ==
Jason returns Kim's nod and settles against the backrest of his seat. He smirks, lets out a short chuckle as he gives a shrug. "Sorry about the jerk-around. Can't be too safe out here, ya know? Especially in light of recent events." He extends his remaining hand towards the turian, "Jason Wolfe." he introduces himself.
Skythix didn't appreciate the deception. What does that say about their company that they needed to be silent like that and yet she got their names so freely? She eyed the hand out stretched to her with disdain at first before finally reaching out her hand to shake it. "So the truth comes out. Lieutenant Teratus." She took her hand back and put them both behind her back, defaulting to
a parade rest. "And I don't know anything about recent events but from what little I heard and the way you're going about this it can't be good." She looked once at the woman before settling her eyes back to Jason.
Kim slightly furrows her brows for a split second before returning her face to the neutral guarded expression, but shrugs anyway and shifts her body to better face the Turian.
Kim duly notes the arms being moved behind Skythix' back and proceeds to not extend her hand out for a handshake, but does give a halfhearted wave before curving that same hand around her glass and taking another mouthful of ale. ==
You certainly are new around here, Lieutenant. Well, if you're looking into work, then you know what it is that we do. And if you know what we do, then you know how easy it is to make enemies in our line of work. Especially out here.
Skythix glanced at Kim but kept her main focus on Jason. "Greetings. Assumed you were this Briggs person." She said with a small bow of her head. "And no, you'll have to fill me in a little more. Pretend I don't know anything." She waved one of her hands about non-chalantly before putting it back behind her. "I made plenty of enemies in the military. I doubt this is much different."
Kim hurriedly swallows the ale in her mouth just in time to let out a brief chuckle. She shakes her head as she speaks while placing her glass gently onto the table.
Jason gives a shake of his head as Kim speaks, letting slip a short chuckle. "Fair enough, Lieutenant. Suppose the difference is that in the military, your enemies hate you because of what you're a part of. It's not personal. You're a nameless, faceless cog in a very large wheel. Out here, they're more than happy to make it all too personal. But enemies are enemies, right? Anyway,
don't put too much thought into 'the way I'm going about this.' " he repeats her words with a smirk, "It's just not often that someone avoids the open channels readily available to contact us and hunts me down in person. Just being cautious."
Skythix barely hid a laugh of her own. The only give away being a flick of her right mandible and a clearing of her throat. "I understand." She took a more relaxed posture again, not seeing a reason to pose herself in proper display. "To me this is the open channel." She motioned to the bar around her. "You already know I'm new on Aite but I'm not new to hatred. Maybe you don't, but
plenty of people hate the turian military and well... since we pretty much all are, they tend to hate all of us." She said with a tilted head and almost a bored look like she's heard it many times before. "I guess it's safe to assume you're a part of this too, Polner?" She asked the woman.
Kim keeps track of the conversation silently after her comment beforehand, but nods once she is spoken to by the turian.
"Indeed, I've been a part of this company since about the time it began," she states with a somewhat unimpressive tone, directly motioning towards Jason afterwards. "We have some history and I'm officially on the payroll, although I've been in and out lately. As for what I do, specifically..." She stops briefly to wink. "...You'll have to wait and see it in the field, if it turns out
Jason reaches for his drink as he listens, idly rotating the glass in place. He lowers his head and gives a somewhat distant nod as Skythix alludes to the discrimination she's likely faced, but he remains silent until Kim finishes speaking.
I realized a long time ago that this line of work can be pretty damn lonely without deciding to hate a whole swath of people you don't even know. You can relax, you're in good company.
Jason glances across the table at Kim and a smirk grows once more on his face. "Alright, well maybe not good company... But we're alright." he jokes.
Skythix took a deep breath before letting it out again. "Guess I'll just have to take your word on it." She smirked and looked between the two. "I have to ask though." Her expression changed to more serious. "What in the spirits name happened to your arm? I'm guessing occupational hazard doesn't completely cover it?" She raised a browplate at Jason with mild concern.
Kim grins back towards Jason and raises her glass dramatically at his comment, but says nothing for the moment. She takes a small sip from her glass and shifts towards the wall to lean against.
Jason mimes Kim's theatrics, downing a healthy amount of his drink before setting it back down. He glances down at the clasped-shut shirt sleeve as he scratches at the back of his head. "Well-..." he begins but pauses right away, trying to choose his words, "Uhh. I was-... See, what happened-..." Finally he sighs and shrugs his shoulders, "Point blank shotgun blast. Yeah, occupational
Skythix cringed slightly at the mention of point blank hits. "Eugh... That's something I'm familiar with." She put a hand gently to her chest. "Lets just say thank the spirits for shields." She could feel a phantom dull pain in her chest just at the mention. "Hope you're at least getting a new one grown for you." She crossed her arms with a tone that sounded like she were saying something
Kim grins and straightens her back completely with a small smile on her face, although her eyes droop down slightly in the process.
"No, I wasn't on the last mission Redrock took part in. I've been mostly unscathed in the ones I did, however," she added, although she somehow doesn't sound all that happy about it. Her smirk comes back soon afterwards, though. "Can't be getting scars that would harm my appeal. It would be a shame if I couldn't have fun once in a while anymore."
Jason scrunches up his face as Kim speaks, but doesn't address the comment. "Yeah... Not much other choice." he says, "I wouldn't be much use out in the field like this." He mutters something about a group discount under his breath, "Anyway, you should be able to put in an application at our extranet site. I'm not gonna lie, we're hurting to get new people in the field, so you're
Skythix | "Guess you're lucky then, Polner." She said casually. To the appeal comment or to her avoiding that fateful mission was up for the human to decide. She couldn't help but cross her arms again and lean back a little at Jason with a cocky grin on her face. "As long as I've got training? If it weren't for your battlescar I'd say I've got plenty amount of years over you." She said
with a smirk that bared her teeth. "Something tells me I'm maybe even over qualified." She said in a sing-song tone. At this point she was just having fun.
Jason raises an eyebrow and smirks. "That so?" he asks, sliding a bit further into the booth to leave the turian room, should she want to take a seat. "Can't say I'm a particularly good judge of turian age-..." he begins, giving an apologetic tilt of his head to imply his comment had no negative implication, "No offense. Been doing this type of shit since I was old enough to join the
Alliance. Multiple tours out in the Traverse." His smirk widens a bit, "Not trying to toot my own horn but-..." he shrugs.
Skythix shifted from foot to foot as she stood. "It's not polite to ask a girl her age you know." She practically purred at the end of the sentence. "But all you humans sort of look the same to me--... Also no offense. I've not spent a lot of time in company. I was a spacer, always on a ship out in the void." She saw he shuffle over in his seat but wasn't sure if she was actually being
invited to sit. It felt rude to just stand next to them the entire time but it also looked strange or suspicious if she continued in her place. "You can only do so much in a short amount of time though." She responded before taking a seat in the booth as close to the edge as possible. "You're alliance still?"
Jason gives a quick shake of his head as he studies his glass a bit distantly. "Nah. That was a lifetime ago. Feels that way, at least. Quit to do my own thing about-..." he pauses as he attempts to do the math in his head, "I don't know, two years ago? Something like that. Time sort of bleeds together when you're getting shot at all the time." he jokes.
"You still have time on me, at least. I don't like to tell my age, but I... am about as young as I look." She winks towards the two and gestures with the hand holding her glass. "I can't say I get shot at as much as Jason does, even accounting for the experience difference."
Skythix gave Kim a neutral look. "To be honest I still couldn't even harbor a guess." She said with a dismissive shrug. "I still remember just about every combat scenario I've been in. They're hard to forget." She said with a small sullen tone at the end but quickly recovered. "Trust me, getting shot is overrated. It's great to brag to your friends when you wake up from surgery but its
just not worth the drug induced haze. There was someone on the ship you could go to if you actually wanted something to loosen up with." It was weird. She wasn't used to being comfortable around new people. So why was she talking so much?
Jason nods along as Kim and Teratus speak. Once an opening presents itself, he shifts a bit to face the turian. "Sounds like you'll fit right in. We're gonna have a lot of work coming up, so make sure you get an application in. We've got a building just outside of town, but it's under construction right now, but hopefully we'll be running at full strength again soon. In the meantime,
this is pretty much our base-of-operations." he chuckles, sweeping a hand around as if showing off the room.
Kim grins and offers the Turian another wink as Jason speaks, then speaks up herself as soon as he finishes.
"Thanks for the compliment. Anyway, good to have you on board," she states while sticking her hand out. Moments later, she smirks. "Or at least, if you're still interested in joining us. We're not the most glorious company in the galaxy right now, but we're something." ==
Skythix looked around the bar, clearly unimpressed. "Can't say it really fits the mood but it is a nice place for convincing drunk and dumb quarians to buy you two bottles of brand new brandy. I'll check it all out regardless." She looked to Kim and shook her hand, maybe a little more comfortable around the female humans? "Too much trouble to leave the planet and go look somewhere else
so I'll stick around for a bit." She took her hand back and gave Kim a confused look. "And why do you keep... The eye thing at me?" She asked, imitating the wink with a little trouble.
Skythix did a double take at the male before she drooped her mandibles in a frown and pointed at Jason. "No no, you're doing now too. Stop that."
Kim winks at the turian yet again for effect, but otherwise only gives a laugh for an answer, at least, until the next response from the Turian.
"It's nothing major. We call it a wink, which is basically what we humans use to indicate a hint. You know..." She stops briefly to give another one. "...When you have a reason to not outright say something, if you know what I mean."
Jason looks up at the turian, deadpanning. "She wants to take you on a trip to dip the tip." he says. He immediately furrows his brow, "To dip the-.... To-....." he trails off momentarily, drawing a blank at making the statement work. Finally his face brightens up and he returns his gaze to the turian. "She wants to do you." he says with a proud nod.
Skythix furrowed her brow plates at Jason and narrowed her eyes, staring at him like he was crazy. Once he said the last sentence, her eyes widened to saucers and she leaned her head back away from both of them. She did a triple take between Jason and Kim. "W-what?!" Her eyes glared at Jason before looking at Kim with a worried look.
Kim bursts out laughing, probably louder than necessary. It takes her a good ten seconds to get it under control.
"Oh man, you should have seen your face," she states with the aftershocks of the laugh still coursing through her. "It's okay, he's messing with you. Well... er, unless you want him to be serious." She bats her eyelashes with a flirty smile for effect. ==
Jason chokes back a chuckle as he sees her reaction and just silently shakes his head as Kim retorts.
Skythix made a sound of disgust and folded her arms across her chest. "You two are vile. Anything else you want to tell me about your wretched human culture?"
"It's okay, I'm messing with you. You should try it on a guy sometime; making their tongues hit the floor is the best feeling."
Kim glances over to Jason, but decides at the last second to not go any further with that particular interaction. ==
Jason blinks a couple times. "How hypocritical of you. Whine about others shitting all over your people without justification, then turn around and shit on ours based on interaction with two people..." he says, tsking. "To answer your question, there's a whole lot I could tell you about our wretched human culture." he adds, allowing a chuckle to escape. It's pretty obvious her insult
Skythix looked genuinely hurt at Jason. "That's not without justification, it's truth and I'm not 'shitting' on your values, I just don't want to fuck Polner." She said at Jason but pointed a sharp talon at Kim. "I'm sure you're... very beautiful, Polner." She said with looking around as if trying to place the blame away from herself. "But good first impression, ambassador." She added
Kim winks at the Turian once more and absently fiddles with the empty glass. She sighs and gives a shrug afterwards.
Jason continues to smirk and nods along with Skythix, clearly amused. "Uh huh." he nods at Kim's response, "But you've got a strange idea of what's 'justified'. Two people say something you don't like and that means their entire culture must be-..." he pauses to recall the word used, "...wretched? Yep. Sounds about right." He slugs back the remainder of his drink and sets down the
Skythix let out a groan and shook her head with her face in her palm. "Yes, wretched. Take advantage of my lack of knowledge on your culture and imply sex for someone else." She paused and blinked. "No, you're right. I take that back. You're wretched." She said at Jason, jabbing a talon in his shoulder and a smirk of her own. "Ohhh... I'm sure I'll love working with you two." She
"I know I already said this earlier, but glad to have you on board. I look forward to our continued acquaintance," she stated with her professional voice. She smirks slightly by the end of her slight speech, but otherwise is closer to the serious half of her personality. ==
Jason raises his eyebrows and shrugs as he's called 'wretched' as if to say 'Yep. Pretty much.' Once Kim finishes speaking, he follows up her speech by saying, "I mean, it's not official yet, but if your qualifications are as good as you've implied.... Welcome to Red Rock. Just shoot that application my way so we can make it official."
Skythix reached out and shook Polner's hand. "As long as you don't keep trying to 'wink' at me." She said, giving the woman a quick wink of her own. "I'm pretty confident. Medals, commendations, experience, you name it." She said to Jason, taking her hand back. "And I'll send it to you before i head to bed tonight. I'm staying here in the Respite tonight until I can get a more permanent
Jason takes a moment to think on it before shaking his head. "Not off the top of my head. I'll come up with a few things to discuss with you once I get that application." he says, reaching for his glass before realizing it's empty. He frowns for a moment and sighs, "How about you? Any questions that can't wait?"
Skythix raised a browplate at Kim at her silence. "I'll take that as a no. Anyway, I'm going to head upstairs. Expect my application within the hour. Hope you're up to some light reading." She waved them off and walked towards the staircase.
Kim waves with a courteous smile towards the Turian as the latter turns away, but otherwise doesn't say anything else towards her.
Jason glances back at the turian once more before returning his attention to Kim. "Well... That happened." he says with a shake of his head, "Thought Rellis may have been trying to finish the job for a moment there..."
"Yeah... well, we'll see what happens. It would be better to be on the offensive rather than the defensive, though..."
That's what the plan was on this last run. We tried and we failed. Just need to pull everything back together and try again... Hopefully with better results.
Jason sighs and glares down at the table. "But first thing first. We need to get a lead on Vasquez. The longer she's missing, the less chance there is of fixing whatever the fuck it is that they've done to her..."
Kim nods and eyes her glass for a moment before tipping the opening into her mouth to get to the last few drops before responding.
"Yeah... the company's reputation is already in danger enough with all the injuries we've been having lately. Having the leader vanish on a job..." ==
Jason nods in agreement. "The unfortunate truth is that it all takes credits. I've got Ilyna looking in to some side jobs for us. Like I said, I took out a loan, but it won't last. Vicky also has a lead on her ship. Could be worth getting the thing back. Might even make a better office than the building along with giving us more options."
"So you already have a plan then... of sorts," she states, although without a whole lot of excitement. "Think we have enough people to get things done when we find something concrete?"
Jason gives a nod. "I mean, it's a rough plan, but it's a plan. I think if we can handle these injuries-..." he glances down at where his arm should be, "...Then we'll be good to go. I've gotta talk to Halisi about setting me up with someone who can take care of this."
Kim suddenly jolts as she realizes how long they've been there. "Oh, wait, what time is it? Elise is probably pissed off that I'm not back yet. Sorry, I gotta run. I'll tell you what's been going on with me lately later. Let me know when you're available again." She hurriedly throws all those words out and stands up just as hurriedly. With a small wave of goodbye, she runs towards
Jason gives a slight chuckle and pats Kim's hand with his own. He goes to speak before he's interrupted by her sudden outburst. He raises an eyebrow and watches as she frantically takes off. "Uhh... Alright. Is everythi-... Yeah, okay-..." he spits out, trying to find an opening to speak, "As she's near the door, he gets a hand up to wave. "Bye....?"
