The door to the room opens and Yan Sun steps inside, still in winter jacket and beanie, plastic bag in hand. She stuffs the beanie into one of the jacket's pockets and sets the bag down by the door before taking a look around the room.
#YanSun'sRoom – September 6, 2017
Jessica is standing in the bathroom in a white tanktop and a pair of cargo pants with the door wide open. A thick layer of white, fluffy shaving cream adorns one side- the burned side- of the top of her head as she leans towards the mirror. It seems she's already taken care of the other side. It would look quite ridiculous if it wasn't for the pained look on her face each time she drags the razor across her head. Her movements are
slow. Careful. But it's not difficult to see each time the razor comes in contact with a rough patch along the side of her head. She winces and uses both hands to slowly guide the razor. The amount of focus she's putting into it causes Yan Sun's entry to go unnoticed.
Yan Sun spots Jessica while removing her jacket, furrowing her eyebrows as she remains standing by the entrance for a moment, studying her. Eventually she hangs up the jacket, calling out "Hey! I'm back!" while removing her shoes.
Jessica only gives the briefest of glances Yan Sun's way. She mutters a grunt that falls somewhere between a 'Hey' and a 'Grah'. She tilts her head and leans in closer to the mirror as she struggles with a particularly rough patch, audibly sucking a deep breath in through her nose as the razor is pulled across her head. Once finished with the patch, she studies it in the mirror to make sure she hasn't cut herself.
Yan Sun winces on Jessica's behalf as she crosses the room, walking softly, as if her footsteps might disturb the shaving. The stops in the doorway, leaning against it as she studies Jessica. "Hey... that... doesn't look fun. Giving you trouble?" she asks tentatively.
Jessica runs the razor under the faucet as Yan Sun approaches and gives a dismissive shrug. "Is fine." she grunts, moving on to an easier section of her head that the fire didn't touch now that Yan Sun is watching. "What were you doing? Mmm?" she asks, hoping to take the focus off of herself.
Yan Sun glances back at the bag by the door briefly. "I was just... doing some shopping. Scrounged up some money and figured I should at least try to dress up a little for the wedding." She studies the spot just shaved, her frown returning. "I haven't seen you do that before... how's your razor? You want to borrow mine?"
Jessica scoffs, rolling her eyes at the suggestion. "My razor is fine." she says sharply, a scowl crossing her features as she browbeats Yan Sun. She gives a shake of her head as she returns her attention to the mirror and makes another quick pass over the part she just shaved. "If you are just going to stand there and be annoying then at least tell me what you buy at-..." she trails off as something occurs to her and she stands up
Yan Sun opens her mouth to answer the first question, but the second one causes her to give a somewhat evasive shrug. "I did tell you I've been working. Anyway, it's just some clothes. I'll show you?" she asks with a thumb over her shoulder.
Jessica cocks an eyebrow. "Mmm. 'Working'." she says. She gestures towards Yan Sun with her razor, "If you are making credits down at the corner then I get a cut of that!" she explains, a slight grin crossing her face despite her obviously shitty mood. Tearing someone else down always cheers her up.
Yan Sun gives Jessica an unamused look, giving her a light shove while the razor is gesturing at her rather than being pressed against skin. "Ugh. Fuck you." she says as she turns to leave for the bag.
Jessica snickers to herself and leans back over the sink once more as Yan Sun steps out, taking the opportunity to carefully deal with one final stubborn bit. "I am not sure if I can afford it." she taunts as she sets the razor down. She takes a bath towel from beside the sink and tosses it over her head to wipe the excess shaving cream away. She tilts her head back and forth as she examines her handy work in the mirror once more.
Not perfect, but she can touch it up before work. "Unless you are giving me a discount!" she adds while exiting the bathroom, quite clearly amused with herself.
Yan Sun passes by in the opposite direction when Jessica exits, passing her and heading into the bathroom with the bag. "鶻突... 卑鄙... 耐心..." are the only words audible as she mutters in response to Jessica on her way past her.
Jessica purposely bumps her shoulder into Yan Sun, just to be as annoying as possible. She may not have any idea what Yan Sun is saying, but she knows that buttons have been pushed and that's good enough for her. "Mmm? I can do that also, kitty cat." she continues to taunt, followed by a guttural string of syllables that, should Yan Sun still have her translator on her, would be identified as batarian slang that roughly translates
Yan Sun stumbles slightly from the shoulder bump, and disappears into the bathroom. "My translator has the Terminus-package, genius!" she calls out as she hears Jessica.
Jessica frowns to herself as she's outplayed and takes a seat on the bed as she waits for Yan Sun. Another throaty string of words flows from her mouth that translates to something along the lines of: "Good! Then you will not be surprised when I destroy your backside when you return!"
Yan Sun offers no response to Jessica, remaining in the bathroom for a while as she changes into the newly acquired clothes. When she does exit, she's wearing a pair of slim black dress pants and a short, black blazer, form-fitting and with a light blue, thin-strapped top underneath - one of the few she already owned. She holds out her arms and does a quick spin around. "How's it look? Fancy enough?"
Jessica cocks an eyebrow as Yan Sun exits the bathroom, silently scrutinizing her outfit. Finally, she shrugs her shoulders. "Mmm. Is fine. I guess." she decides, suddenly feeling less confident about her own outfit. "You are sure you want to go? Is probably going to be boring, kitty cat." she says as she continues to look over Yan Sun's clothing.
Yan Sun frowns slightly at the lukewarm response. Not that she expected otherwise. After the question she crosses her arms as she looks at Jessica. "Uh, considering I just spend the whole day wandering through a snowstorm to find these clothes, yeah, at this point I think it's pretty set." she says, flashing a small grin as she heads over to the bed, shifting her stance a bit as she looks down at her clothes. "I don't care
Jessica frowns at first, but eventually nods. "Fine..." she sighs, partially still frustrated that Vasquez hasn't yet taken her up on her offer, "...Maybe they will at least have good booze." She reaches out and grabs at the bottom of Yan Sun's blazer, rubbing it between her thumb and index finger. "Is nice." she admits as she looks up to Yan Sun. Almost reluctantly. "The clothes, I mean. You still are looking stupid." she adds.
Yan Sun briefly gains a small smile, which fades as Jessica continues, replaced by a deadpan expression. "...thanks." she says with exaggerated unenthusiasm. "Took some time to find something that felt right. Usually had to wear whatever my parents picked out when I needed to dress up." she says, allowing herself to fall into the bed next to Jessica, causing a slight bounce. "Always hated it."
Jessica shifts in place a bit to accommodate Yan Sun plopping down beside her. "Awww, did the little kitty cat have to be dressed by her mommy and daddy?" she teases, ever eager to be annoying. "How precious."
Yan Sun doesn't seem particularly amused. Although she tries to hide it there's a hint of annoyance in her voice. "Wasn't exactly by choice."
Jessica snorts loudly. "Why you didn't just tell them to fuck off, mmm? They can not just make you wear something, kitty cat." She shrugs her shoulders, clearly not understanding the predicament. "If my father would have tell me to wear something I did not want to wear? I would tell him to mind his own fucking business."
Yan Sun seems a little caught off-guard by this. After an initial moment of bewilderment she sighs. "Yeah, well, not all of us are you, Jessica..." she says quietly, leaning back and turning her gaze to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Jessica shrugs dismissively, seemingly not catching that Yan Sun may have meant it as a negative. As a matter of fact, she seems to take it as a point of pride. "Mmm. True." she agrees with a short nod. She pulls her legs up onto the bed and rotates in place to face Yan Sun. "How they would feel about this? Mmm?" she asks, her good eye scanning over the outfit Yan
Yan Sun glances over in Jessica's direction, and shifts a little bit towards her in response. She looks down at her clothes, holding out her arms in front of her. "I... don't know, really." she admits. "It was always these dumb-looking dresses for the parties. And the uniform for school. I just wanted to wear my jeans." she says with a small shrug. "Both of them hated when I did. Wasn't how 'people like us' were supposed to
Yan Sun dress. Should've seen their faces when I came home with this..." she adds, running a hand over the stubble on the shaved side of her head with a small grin.
Jessica bursts into a loud snort at the mention of dresses. "People like us...?" she repeats with a roll of her eye. "Mmm. Your parents really are assholes, kitty cat." she decides, as if that hadn't been made apparent by this point. Her attention moves to Yan Sun's haircut. "What will you say to them when you go back?" she asks. She tilts her head before correcting herself, still not entirely comfortable with the idea, "...When
Yan Sun blinks. "W-... I d-... what?" she manages, staring at Jessica as if she's crazy. "We're not seeing my parents. We're definitely not seeing my parents. I said I wanted to show you where I'm from. That's Hong Kong, not-... yeah, no. Sooo... I'm saying nothing to them. Hopefully they won't even know I'm back on Earth."
Jessica blinks a couple of times before furrowing her brow. "Mmm. No." she decides. "Hong Kong is where you grow up. Not where you are from. The where you are from is a who. Maybe I did not go to some fancy little school like you, but even I know this. Don't worry, I will protect you if they try to make you change your shirt, kitty cat."
Yan Sun frowns, her tone laced with hints of frustration. "I'm serious. I'm not taking you to see my family. I'm not even letting them know I'm there. Why would I? No way." she says, shifting further to face Jessica, folding her legs up into the bed and pressing a palm against the matress to support herself.
Jessica gives a simple shake of her head, as if she's not giving giving Yan Sun permission to avoid her family. "Because they are your family." she says. After a moment a frown returns to her face as she seems to realize something. "I get it... You are embarassed, yes? Of what your father will think when he sees that you are fucking some piece of shit from the Terminus Systems?" She shrugs dismissively, as if that doesn't bother
Yan Sun is briefly stunned as Jessica suggests it's about her. "Wh-... no, that's not-... Jessica, it's not about you, it's about them!" she quickly exclaims, scooting closer to Jessica and attempting to place a hand on one of her knees. "I don't give a shit what my father thinks about you!"
Jessica cocks an eyebrow and looks down at Yan Sun's hand. As expected, a roll of her eye follows. "Mmm. Of course. Whatever you say. You don't want to see them, then we won't see them. I don't give a fuck either way."
Yan Sun tilts her head a little, her asymmetrical hair falling away from her face as she tries to get a better look at Jessica's expression. "Yeah...? Because... it seems like you do." she ventures carefully. "Jessica..." she says, without any immediate followup, her thumb brushing across the fabric of her cargo pants as she looks down at her hand.
Jessica scoffs loudly. "Is fine." she repeats, her tone indicating it clearly isn't. Despite everything that Yan Sun has told her about her family, she still just seems to have trouble understanding that dynamic, her bond with her own family making it difficult for her to grasp. She gives a deep sigh, "I do not understand. You say they are not good people... But they are your family. We are going to travel all across the fucking
Jessica galaxy to the city that they live in and you do not even care to see them?" She furrows her brow, the situation making little sense to her. "My father was a fucking asshole. Maybe the biggest asshole you ever meet. But if he wasn't buried in a hole with about a hundred other people-... and I didn't hate digging so much, then I would see him whenever I could." she explains. Despite the morbid nature of her statement, there's
Jessica no emotion in her voice. "So if it is me? Then just say so. I do not give a shit. I will stay behind and you can go see your parents."
Yan Sun stares down at her knuckles, an uncomfortable look crossing her face as Jessica speaks. Hearing her speak of her parents always made her feel guilty. Doubly so now. When the silence starts to grow too long she lets out a sigh. "I don't want to see them, Jessica. They don't want to see me either, trust me. I'm disowned, remember? It's... just not a good idea. But... it doesn't have anything to do with you.
Yan Sun I do not care what they think about you." She looks up at Jessica, her frown deepening. "Do... you care...?" she wonders, sounding hesitant.
Jessica furrows her brow as she listens to Yan Sun speak. The question catches her off guard and she immediately scoffs loudly, lest it seem like she may actually be bothered by something. "Why the fuck would I care about what some rich, stuck up assholes think about me? Mmm?" she lies. "I am thinking you care about what they will think about me. The same way you seem to care so much about what they are thinking about the things
Jessica you wear. The way you cut your hair." she shrugs. "But since I do not really give a fuck about what you think of me either, it does not really matter, yes?" she attempts to sum the whole ordeal up as a smug, condescending grin falls into place. "You see? Everything is fine."
Yan Sun 's frown remains, although it's nature changes as Jessica's comments misfire badly. "Right." she says, her tone frosty as she withdraws her hand from her knee, turning away from Jessica and pushing off from the couch. She heads over towards the bathroom, presumably to switch out of the newly acquired wedding clothes.
Jessica's grin fades away as Yan Sun leaves the couch abruptly. Yan Sun's tone doesn't go unnoticed. "Gah-... What!? Mmm!?" she asks as she stands from the couch and follows behind. "I am saying I am not angry with you!" she explains as she folds her arms across her chest and leans against the bathroom doorframe. "And now you are being an asshole."
Yan Sun starts to change in silence, slipping out of the jacket and then the pants, carefully putting both back in the bag, on a hanger. Only once she grabs her jeans she turns to Jessica, holding them in her hand. "I'm being an asshole?" she asks, folding her arms across her chest as she shoots her an annoyed glare.
Jessica cocks an eyebrow, studying Yan Sun silently for a moment as she tries to grasp the implication. Nope, nothing hits her. "Yes! You are doing that thing-..." she explains, gesturing to Yan Sun with one hand, "...Where you get pissed off and do not tell me why you are being pissed off. I don't like stupid games. Why you are pissed off? Mmm?" To be fair, it's at least a slight step in the right direction for Jessica to even give
Yan Sun continues to look at her for a moment before shaking her head and starting to put her jeans on, struggling to get her second foot into the leg due to being distracted. She speaks in a frustrated tone as she struggles. "Why-... ugh-... why can't you just trust that it's not about you?! You think I'm-... you think I'm ashamed of you or something?" she says as she finally manages to pull up her pants, her upset slightly
undercut by the anger-infused wriggle as she gets the slim-fitting pants into place. "How much of an asshole do you think I am? Maybe you don't 'give a fuck' what I think about you..." she says, gesticulating with her now-free hands as she glares at Jessica. "... but I care what you think about me."
Jessica shows little reaction to most of what Yan Sun has to say. But her expression grows uncomfortable at the earnest admission at the end. "I am not saying you are ashamed of me. I am saying that I do not care if you are ashamed of me. Is a big difference, yes?" she explains, attempting to somehow navigate the situation she's caused without actually accepting any blame. She sucks in a deep breath through her nose and lets it
out, matching Yan Sun's frustration as she realizes that's probably not going to go over well. "I do not think you are an asshole, kitty cat." she admits with a sigh, her tone softening, but she instantly tilts her head to the side as she reconsiders. "I do not think you are much of an asshole." she corrects. "But I do think you are a fool. I am leaving my home to travel all the way across the galaxy with you." She takes
a step closer and reaches out, grasping at Yan Sun's wrist. The scarring across the palm of her hand causes her touch to be harsh. Scratchy. She makes eye contact for a brief moment, but sincerity isn't exactly her strong suit and a bit of that old self consciousness seeps back in. The closeness and the bathroom lights causes her to fall back into old habits, angling her burns away from Yan Sun. It's a habit she's mostly put
behind her. "I trust you. Okay? And if you still think I do not care, then you are dumber than I thought. And I thought you were pretty dumb." she explains with a tone of sincerity that runs counter to the casual insult slung Yan Sun's way. "I am just-..." she scoffs, cutting herself off with a shake of her head rather than committing to what she was about to say. "Just stop being so-.... this, mmm?"
Yan Sun almost interrupts Jessica after her first 'explanation', her frustration only growing, but as she continues, her expression slowly starts to soften. Her gaze darts down briefly when she feels the hand around her wrist, most of her anger dissipated by the time she looks back at Jessica's face. A slight smile tugs at one corner of her lips continues, the casual insult not seeming to faze her at all. By the end she lowers
her gaze again, a quiet chuckle escaping her at the final request. She stays silent at first, uncertain how to respond, but then looks up at Jessica again. "Can... I have my hand back? Because I still need to button my pants." she says with a snicker, trying to lighten the mood while showing she's no longer angry.
Jessica glances down at Yan Sun's hand, relieved to see Yan Sun's frustration fade. A grin returns to her face as she considers the request and gives a shrug in response. "Mmm. I guess. But... mommy and daddy aren't around to tell you what to wear, sooo..." she says, back to picking on Yan Sun without missing a beat, "...Maybe is best if you just wear nothing, yes? I will not complain."
Yan Sun does not seem particularly swayed, looking at Jessica with an unamused expression. "Mm... yeah, I think I'm gonna keep my clothes on, thanks." she says before withdrawing her hand from Jessica's grasp and starting to button her jeans.
Jessica's grin turns to a scowl and she gives Yan Sun a momentary stare down. "You are no fun." she pouts. With a sigh she turns back towards the sink and grabs her razor to begin cleaning up her mess. "No fun!" she repeats as she sets the razor aside and moves on to the can of shaving cream. Without warning, however, she sprays a huge clump of white foam into her hand, turns in place and gives Yan Sun a playful, if a little bit
hard, slap across the cheek. The shaving cream erupts on contact, leaving a big pile of foam on the side of Yan Sun's face as well as asploding all over from the impact, making a bit of a mess. Little specks of white are on Yan Sun's clothes. The sink. The floor. The mirror. Jessica. Jessica's eye goes wide at the mess she's made and just how ridiculous Yan Sun looks with shaving cream all over her, and immediately brings
Yan Sun blinks as she's slapped, jumping slightly in place from surprise. She looks stunned, and only when she brings a hand up to her cheek does she notice that there's now shaving foam everywhere. "Wh-..." she bites down on her lip and shakes her head, scooping as much of the foam as she can from her cheek smearing it across the laughing Jessica's face. "Asshole!" she calls out, barely keeping in a laugh of her own as the
Jessica's laughter ends abruptly with a gasp as Yan Sun smears the foam across her face. "I am not the asshole! I just take a shower!" she complains, "And now you get this shit all over me!" She narrows her eyes on Yan Sun, but they slowly drift back to the can of shaving cream on the counter.
Yan Sun follows Jessica's gaze, and when she realizes what she's looking at she immediately scrambles for the can.
Jessica's eyes widen as Yan Sun catches onto her plan and she follows suit, reaching out for the can in an attempt at getting control of it before Yan Sun can. "No! Is mine!"
Yan Sun is quick to snatch the can before Jessica is able to, but it slips out of her foam-covered hand, and she finds herself near-enough juggling the thing as she scrambles to get a grip on it again. Unfortunately for Jessica, she does, however, and immediately pushes the muzzle towards her torso, holding the button down with a near-enough manic laugh.
Jessica crashes into the counter with a fair bit of force in her struggle to gain possession of the can. When she comes up empty handed, she swivels to face Yan Sun, hands up defensively. "I have work in a few hours! Don't you dare-..." but it's too late. Her pleading is cut short as the sound of condensed air fills the room. "Gah!!!!!" she grunts as a steady stream of foamy white shaving cream catches her. "You bitch!" she continues
to complain, turning her head to the side and trying to block her face from foamy collateral damage.
Yan Sun withdraws when Jessica curses her out, raising her arm in a protective gesture as she lets out a mischievous snicker upon getting a chance to look at her handiwork. "You started it, jerk!" she says amid laughter.
Jessica reorients herself to face Yan Sun when the hissing can goes quiet once more. She puts her hands up in front of herself as she glares at Yan Sun and repeats the batarian phrase from earlier about destroying Yan Sun. Though given their current predicament, it's probably not quite so empty a threat this time. Without warning, she pounces, reaching for control of the can in Yan Sun's hand.
