#FreedomFalls – September 6, 2015
The market is inside one of the larger buildings in town, and one of the older, established around the same time as the spaceport. The inside of the market consits mainly of a cross-shape of paths with an open, circular central area. Another set of paths run along the other wall. All paths have storefronts and other establishments on both sides, with various degrees of legitimacy and permanence, but in many areas part of the path is
covered by stalls and strees vendors, with a higher concentration in the central square. Some of these spill out of the building into the eastern street. There is a second floor, but it is much more limited in space, being mostly focused around the central, circular square, with walkways going all the way around. Many of the more well-established shops make their home on the second floor, alongside a a restaurant or two, contrasting
the food stands below. A small number of interstellar franchise stores are on this floor as well, but they are limited in number. Immediately upon entering Jason and Va'ynna would have closest to them, a butcher selling space cow meat in various forms, a money lender, an omni-tool repair shop, an asari matron selling what is supposedly the latest fashion on Thessia, a vorcha in a corner who appears to be doing a cup game, a small
store that mostly seems to sell mass-produced human clothing items, and also a surly-looking batarian with an extensive collection of "hunting weapons". In between the vendors are ad pillars of the sort commonly seen in such locations, with messages adjusting to the person viewing them. Above float more generic ads, mixing in with the holographic store signs for the more established shops. Some of the locations have one or two LOKI
Jason nudges Va'ynna with a nod towards the matron. "Latest fashion on Thessia!" he repeats a bit sarcastically. "There ya go. Everything you need, right in front of you."
Arenn'Zahir ambles around the market, looking warily to and fro. He approaches the omni-tool repair shop almost as soon as he sees it. "Keelah Se'lai." He nods politely at the clerk.
Va'ynna nods and starts walking towards the store Jason pointed at. "You... did know where to look," she says followed by a giggle, even though it was clearly visible from the entrance; Va'ynna missed it in her first look around.
Jason gives a shrug. "What can I say. I moonlight as an asari on the weekends." he says, following alongside Va'ynna as he glances about, "So, now you know what that's all about when I come shuffling back into the Respite in the middle of the night looking a little... blue." He looks over at Va'ynna with a big stupid smirk, tilting his head slightly as he awaits approval for his
The clerk at the omni-tool repair shop - a turian man, stares at Arenn'Zahir with suspicion. "I shoot thieves, buckethead. So you best keep your hands where I can see them."
Arenn'Zahir waves his hands, acting flustered more for the benefit of the turian than himself. "I am looking for a job. Who better to repair omnitools than a quarian engineer?"
The turian laughs, mandibles flaring out in amusement. "Like I'd trust you with anything not nailed to the floor. Last of you sickly lot that came in here almost walked off with an entire shelf of tools stuffed in his suit! I know how deep the pockets of those things are! Get out of here!"
Arenn'Zahir pointedly empties out his bag on the counter. All that's left is a tube of dextro-paste and a nearly empty cred-chit. "You want it? Take it. I will not be reduced to the stereotypes of my people you bosh'tet."
Jason remains a few paces behind Va'ynna as she looks over the asari's wares, merely doing a bit of people watching. "Anything ya like?" he asks idly.
The matron's wares are mostly dresses. The clothes seem to be more the sort that were popular fifty or so years ago on Thessia - unfashionable, but far from ugly.
Arenn'Zahir gestures just as wildly. "You call me a thief and yet you are a discriminator!" He tosses his cred-chit at the turian's mandibles. "Take it you leech! Choke on your fundings."
The dresses are mostly hung up on two metal racks for browsing, on either side of the asari, who sits and watches the customers with a smile, with a purchase terminal right beside her.
The turian is stunned for a moment as he is hit by the credit chit, which bounces off him onto the counter. He starts shooing Arenn with a frustrated tone. "Get out! Don't make me get my gun!"
Va'ynna approaches one of the racks and start browsing, making sure to check the sizes on them in case they'll fit on the 6'/185cm asari. "I... don't know," she says. "Let me... take a look, first."
Arenn'Zahir slams his fist on the table. "Do it! Show me you're a real turian eh? All murderers and soldiers! How does it feel to be profiled?!"
Most of the dresses are made for shorter asari, but there are a few that would fit. One tight-fitting, rather revealing blue dress, which looks considerably more modern than the others, a losse, silky dress in white which seems suited for the pleasant weather of Thessia, and a rather complicated lime-green affair with dark green accents that is of the sort a matriarch would wear.
The turian's frustration fades as he simply rolls his eyes, pulling out an M-23 shotgun from behind the counter and showing it casually to the quarian. "Now would you please get the fuck out of my shop?"
Va'ynna takes out the white one first, with a thoughtful hum. "I... don't see many that would fit me," she says. "I... think this one would be... too much of a contrast."
Jason remains close to Va'ynna, not paying much mind to what she's looking through until she calls attention to it. He glances it over and whistles loudly. He places a hand on his chin as he nods sagely alongside Va'ynna a few times. "Contrast. Mmhmm. Too much of it there. Especially in... that region..." he points arbitrarily towards the dress, as if he has any idea what Va'ynna is
Va'ynna nudges him and hangs the dress back into place. "It's... in all regions, because... purple and white doesn't... go well together, I think." She walks over to the revealing dress, taking it out with a sheepish smile. "That... leaves this," she says. "Um, I... I don't think that one's for me,... at all."
Arenn'Zahir backs out of the shop after seeing the gun, huffing audibly about the racism of this place.
Jason frowns as Va'ynna elaborates. "Oh..." he says plainly. He sighs loudly, "You probably shouldn't be expecting much fashion advice from a guy that wears boots 7 days a week." he admits.
Va'ynna puts the dress in front of her and looks towards Jason. "But... even you should know... that this is not... like me at all," she says. "And... I'm no better. I have... three dresses, two... I use often."
The matron stands up, approaching Jason and Va'ynna. "You like the dress?" She says enthusiastically, gesturing at the one in her hands.
Jason gives another shrug as he looks over the dress. "Change is good, though. Right? Nothing wrong with switching things up every now and then. Besides, I'm sure Victoria would love that one." he teases with an eyebrow wiggle.
Va'ynna blushes, especially as the matron approaches them. "I... think it's nice, but... I don't think I'll... feel comfortable in it," she says, looking a bit embarrased.
The matron tuts dismissively. "Nonsense! This is perfect! It will make all the other maidens envious!"
Jason places a hand on Va'ynna's shoulder and gives it a pat. "I agree!" he says with a smirk, "It's perfect."
Va'ynna looks away, the sales pitch not helping her embarrasment. "That's... what I don't... want," she says, "other... maidens looking at me like... that."
The matron shakes her head, contuning with the same enthusiasm. "So bashful! You are a maiden! Adventure! Explore! Be bold!"
Jason gestures with his hands, speaking a beat behind the matron as he repeats her words. "A maiden! Adventure! Explore! Be bald!"
Jason furrows his brow as he wonders why the matron would-... suddenly it occurs to him and he clears his throat. "Bold! Be bold!"
Va'ynna sighs, looking down at the ground for a moment. "You're... awful," she says. "I... I... suppose I should... try be more... maiden-like, but... I'm not going to wear something like this... to work." She looks around the dress for a price tag, as she's neglected to do so when quickly browsing through the sizes earlier.
The matron smiles. "A special price for you, so you can go and live like a maiden! Only 200 credits!"
Jason gestures once more, repeating the matron. "Only 200 cre-..." he pauses and glances at the matron. "200 credits!? C'mon! You can do better than that." he scoffs.
Va'ynna hums thoughtfully, then glances at Jason. She had no idea what kind or prices these goods carry out here.
The matron looks at Jason, grabbing the bottom of the dress and lifting it up closer to him. "This is a fine dress, and from Thessia no less! 200 is a good price."
Jason has no idea either. It could very well be an amazing price. A steal, even. "Psh, who are you trying to kid?" he asks with a snort. He grabs the material between his fingertips and rubs it as he scrutinizes the dress disapprovingly. "120." he says plainly.
The matron takes on an offended look. "This is prime asari fashion! I will sell it for 190. No less."
Jason frowns and narrows his eyes on the matron before glancing over at Va'ynna. He mouths a question to her. "Is that good...?" looking entirely lost.
Va'ynna nods. "That's... okay, I suppose," she says, not wanting them to fight over this, inadvertently answering Jason's question without understanding it. She looks at the matron "I... also want to browse some more before... I decide. Could you... help me with that?" She glances at the other rack of clothes.
The asari smiles widely. "Of course! Of course! I have a coat here that may be too your liking... perfect if you decide to visit the mountains! Or go off-world!" She produces a long navy blue winter coat from the other rack, with a flaired, ornamented design, including an antique asari pattern in a golden color.
Jason rolls his eyes and lets out a sigh as he begins to pace a little further away from the pair, looking around for any place worth interest nearby. The target: Booze.
Va'ynna looks the coat over, glancing at Jason with a worried look as he's leaving her without saying anything. "It's... getting colder outside, so... I could probably use it," she says. "Can I... try it on?" She fidgets a bit with her hands.
The matron nods, holding out the coat for Va'ynna to put it on easily. "Of course! You'll look lovely in it, even in the harshest blizzard!"
Va'ynna hangs up the dress she's holding on the rack and starts by putting her arms into the coat. "I... I hope I... won't need to be anywhere in... that kind of weather," she says.
The matron laughs, letting go of the coat and handing Va'ynna a hand mirror. "Beautiful, is it not?"
Jason folds his arms across his chest once he's a few feet away from the pair, merely scanning the area.
At least in this part of the market, Jason's options seem rather limited. The small grocery store the entrace of which is sticking out between two food stands seems to be the only place in this are that might carry alcohol.
Jason makes a mental note and returns to Va'ynna's side, looking over the fancy coat. "Nice. Should probably get myself a heavier coat, too." He smirks at the matron, "Got this in my size?"
Va'ynna takes the mirror and looks the coat over, letting out a giggle at Jason's comment. "I... I think it... looks nice, too," she says, not uncertain about the coat, but tshe might come across that way to many.
The asari looks a bit puzzled. "Ah... I do not carry any human clothing. Had you had a lither frame it may have fit, I have sold to some humans in the past."
Jason blinks a few times and nods. "...Right." he sighs, realizing this woman has no sense of humor. He glances back at Va'ynna and looks over the coat once more. He gives a thumbs up. "Personally, I say it's a keeper."
Va'ynna nods. "I'd get this, then," she says. "Also, I... don't suppose you have... a modest dress my size that... doesn't stand out... too much?"
The matron nods at the first part, moving over to the payment terminal. "No, this is all I have... but you want the stunning blue dress you were looking at, yes?"
Va'ynna looks unsure for a moment, then nods and takes it off the rack. "Yes," she says and walks over to the matron.
The matron's hand hovers over the holographic interface on the rear of the terminal, typing briefly to make a quick adjustment to the price of the dress. "180 for the dress, and 150 for the coat..."
Jason smiles wide and pats Va'ynna on the back softly. Well, as softly as he can manage. "Get out of that comfort zone."
Va'ynna enables her omni-tool with a sigh. "I... know I should, but it's... a reason it's... called that," she says in a lowered voice, followed by a sheepish smile. "That's... three-hundred and thirty, right?" she asks, waiting for a payment request.
Va'ynna pays after a short giggle at Jason. If Jason sneaks a peek at her account information, it says she has 264 credits left after the transaction. She shuts off the omni-tool's interface.
The asari matron smiles. "Come back another week! My selection is always updating! And remember - be bold!"
Va'ynna takes the clotheshanger off the dress and leaves it on the counter before folding it. "Thanks," she says. "Can I get... a bag to keep it in, please?" She then looks at Jason. "Now it's... your turn to choose."
Jason turns around and scans the immediate area once again with a frown. He nods towards the small grocery store nearby. "How about we check out what they've got in there?" he asks, casting a glance back at Va'ynna, "I need a few things to snack on. I don't actually have any food back in my room." He slowly extends his hand towards the asari, "Want me to carry that? Doc said I needed
