#Hospital – January 24, 2016
Uvena is in the all too familiar recovery room. She seems to be sleeping, however. She was immediately prepared for surgery when she came in 3 hours ago, and Mendez would not have seen her since then; the hospital staff would keep him informed, however.
Jason makes his way into the hospital, stopping just inside the reception to exchange words with Mendez and get the room information. Once finished he continues on towards Uvena's room, giving the door a quick knock and waiting a few seconds before poking his head inside. "You up for visitors?" he asks, instantly feeling a pang of guilt for his employee's actions that put the asari in this
Uvena opens her eyes, and lifts her head to look at the door, but doesn't sit up. She clears her throat. "Yeah," she says, but her voice is barely audible from the door. "You're... Wolfe, right?"
Jason steps inside with a short nod. "Yeah... We spoke before when you hired us on for the job..." he reminds her. He glances around for a place to sit as he moves closer, "So... You doing alright? Mendez told me what happened..."
Uvena sighs, taking a few seconds to answer. "I am tired, and feeling a bit nauseous, but at least I'm alive," she says. "I'm still waiting for a doc to give me a rundown of how surgery went."
Jason takes a seat on a chair beside the bed and rests his forearm atop his knees, leaning forward slightly. He gives a short nod in response. "You're conscious and you're speaking. Seems like you're probably in the clear for now... You think you're up for answering a few questions...?"
Jason glances down at his hands for a few moments, biting his lower lip as he decides how to approach the situation. "V-... Your daughter came to me about the car. Asked me to look into things for you, Uvena." he says, making eye contact once again, "From what Mendez said, it sounds like this attack was related...?" He pauses and puts one hand up, "Before you say anything, I just wanna say
Uvena raises an eyebrow for a moment. "She did?" she asks. "Is that... why she refused to give me the footage?" She pauses for a moment. "Thank you," she then says before awaiting an answer, "because my financial situation is fucked."
Jason nods along as she speaks, giving a little snicker at the mention of her money problems. "I know that feeling..." he admits, "...So what can you tell me about the person that attacked you? Have you seen him before? Mendez mentioned the militia..."
Uvena looks down for a moment as she thinks through the events leading up to the attack. "I first saw him walking up and down the streets, and I didn't pay him much mind," she says, "but then he just stood on the other side of the road with his omni-tool on.... When I caught him looking into my apartment, I got nervous." She sighs before adding, "I was paranoid, I know, but... out here owing credits is dangerous."
Jason gives a couple nods followed by a sigh, "Yeah... Is there any truth to his claim of working with the militia?" he asks, "If so, what would cause the militia to send him out to collect a debt for someone else? And while we're on the subject, who exactly is it that you owe...?"
Uvena shakes her head. "I... do not know anything about the militia, so they could be offering that kind of service for all I know," she says before looking back at him. "Cheatum and Howe, car rental company. They seemed like good people, but the tone changed drastically when they learned that the car was gone."
Jason quickly pulls his omni-tool up, causing the interface to project in front of him. "Cheatum and Howe..." he repeats aloud. He keeps his attention on his omni-tool for the moment as he pokes at the interface. "And there was no sort of insurance plan or anything...?" he eventually asks as the holographic interface dissipates, "Did they even offer anything like that...?"
Jason gives a quick nod. "Probably wouldn't make sense to offer insurance out here anyway." he sighs, "Look... I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. But in the meantime, you probably shouldn't go home. Do you have anywhere you can stay until this is all sorted?"
The car rental company is based near the center of town, on the small commercial district west of the road splitting the down down the middle. They offer anything from wheeled cars and trucks to a few sky-cars. The latter is 600 per 3 days or 3,000 per month. Wheeled offerings are a lot cheaper.
Uvena frowns. "No, I'm on my own out here," she says. "I have enough to pay rent for another month, and eat if I budget carefully." She sighs, "And that's without considering the debts I owe."
Jason lowers his gaze as he nods. "Forget about the debt." he says, "We're going to handle that. Already working a lead on getting the car back..." He opts to avoid the details surrounding the situation for now, lest it make things worse, "Don't give them another credit. What were your plans beyond this month, anyway? Where were you going after your credits ran out...?"
Uvena stares at him in disbelief. "You're kidding me now, right?" she says. "I... don't.... I don't understand. What have I done to deserve that?"
Jason sucks in some air, not exactly wanting to tell her the full story. "I'll fill you in on everything when you're in a better condition... You're important to V, and V is important to me. That's enough reason for me to step in, alright?"
Uvena gives a faint nod, a smile finally showing up. "I.... Thank you," she says. "You have no idea how grateful I am. I thought I was done for with the debt piling up. it's all I could think about before you showed up." She carefully moves her right hand so she can wipe her eyes, muttering, "Sorry."
Jason smirks slightly. "Don't mention it. Really, don't mention it... For now, just focus on healing up. Let me handle the rest, alright?"
Uvena nods again. "Alright," she replies. "There's information back at the apartment about who to contact about damages, but I wouldn't count on finding anything there now."
Jason gives another nod. "I'm sure I can get their details on the extranet, so that's not a problem. Is there anything else that might help, though?"
Uvena hums thoughtfully. "It would be nice if you got that sorted out first," she says. "The busted door won't stop anyone that wants to help themselves to my belongings."
Uvena shakes her head. "No, I can't think of any," she says. "Va'ynna had a lead, but I'm almost sure you already got that."
Jason breaks eye contact at the mention of Va'ynna's "lead". "Yeah... I'm working on it. Well-..." he says, standing from his seat, "...I'm gonna let you get back to resting. I'll keep Mendez posted here tonight, at least until we get an update from the doctors and you decide where you want to go from here, alright? Obviously I can't devote the sort of manpower it would take to keep a guard
Uvena nods. "That's fine," she says. "If the... debts will be paid, that should get me off their radar anyway. I hope so, at least." She pauses for a moment. "You asked what my plans were," she says. "It was to make things right for my daughter, and... this issue ended up getting between us."
Jason shakes his head a few times, a pang of guilt stabbing at him once again. "Your daughter loves you. She's just worried. But we're gonna fix this, alright? You just get some rest. I'll get in touch with V and let her know where you are. I'm sure she'll want to swing by."
Uvena nods and then frowns. "I'll contact her when I recover," she says. "She... doesn't need to see me like this."
Uvena sighs. "She stormed off, looking like she's at the verge of tears the last time we saw each other," she says. "But then again, I am in no position to make demands." She lays her head back down on the pillow, looking up at the ceiling.
Jason watches her for a few moments before responding. "She'll get over it. It's obvious she cares about you. She wouldn't have come to me if she didn't. I just don't feel right keeping things from her." He lowers his gaze once more, "But like I said... We'll get to the bottom of this, so don't worry about it."
Uvena offers a small smile, but doesn't lift her head to look at him. "I understand," she says. "It won't make me any less grateful, and I mean that."
Jason gives a quick shake of his head. "No need for gratitude..." he says, hoping to ease a bit of his guilt, "...Just get your rest and send me a message if you think of anything that might be helpful in dealing with these people."
Uvena lifts her head again to look at him. "Now that I think about it, there must be someone in the miltia you could ask."
Uvena sighs and lays her head back on the pillow. "Sorry, I meant getting in touch with the militia in general," she says. "Not anyone specific."
Jason lowers his omni-tool and stuffs it back into his pocket. "Right... Well, that's a given. For now, however, I think the car rental service should be the priority. Make sure they know this is being addressed and that sending someone else after you isn't an option..."
Uvena gives the faintest nod. "Yeah, that sounds like a good place to start," she says. "If it truly is the militia... well, let's hope it isn't."
Jason nods in turn a couple times. "Just let me worry about that." he says. "Well, I should probably get going. You need anything before I head out?"
Uvena frowns. "But... I should probably wait to hear from a doctor before drinking anyway. The nurse didn't even want me to sit up."
Jason chuckles and gives a shake of his head. "Well, in that case, I'll talk to you later. I'll have Mendez check on you in a few hours. If you need anything, feel free to send a message my way, alright?"
Jason gives a short wave as he turns on his heels and heads out of the room. He lets out a deep breath once out of the room and mutters a few choice words for Renala under his breath.
Uvena mutters, "See you," though it is barely above a whipser, before she lays down on the pillow to catch a few minutes of rest before the doctor shows up.
