Uvena's Car Debrief and Fergus' First Words.
Uvena is briefed on the car situation, Va'ynna catches up with Jason after Gren's job, and Fergus speaks his first words.
Jason is seated in his office, fingers slowly dropping onto keys as he stares distantly at his terminal screen.
Uvena walks up to the front door, Va'ynna walking beside her. She is in a long gray raincoat and simple black pants, and the other asari has her navy-blue coat over a red dress. She opens the door and looks inside for a receptionist.
As usual, there is no receptionist. A few moments after their arrival, however, the door to Jason's office slides open and he leans out through the doorway.
Jason smiles as he spots Va'ynna, waving the pair over. "Hey. Come on in." he calls out before disappearing back through the door.
Va'ynna then takes the lead, walking down the hallway to his office. She stops in the doorway, looking in.
The office is fairly empty. A desk with a terminal atop it, which Jason is now sitting behind, with a photo of himself and Vasquez beside the terminal. Two vacant chairs are opposite of Jason. Behind him, another photo is hanging on the wall of him and a salarian. Va'ynna might recall Tarlon from his visit at the Respite. A Revenant is mounted on the wall to the right with Jason's armor in a display case beneath it. Both are
Uvena enters the office second, and looks around at the pictures. She takes off the raincoat, and hangs it on the back of one of the chairs. "How are you, Mr. Wolfe?" she asks before sitting down on the same chair.
Jason leans back in his seat a bit, furrowing his eyebrow at the asari. "Thank me? No need." he says, waving a hand dismissively, "I told you we would look into it." He lays his hands against the top of his desk, folding one atop the other. "How have you been, V? Been so busy with work I haven't had much time to stop by the Respite lately." he says, tilting his head apologetically. As
Uvena enters the office, he gives her a nod, "I think I should be asking you that question." he responds, "You doing alright? They take good care of you down at the hospital?"
Va'ynna smiles. "I've been fine," she says. "I... had a-...." She glances at her mother. "We... should speak later, though," she says.
Uvena nods. "I'm alright," she says. "The hospital out here is very good. It's not a place I'd planned to be seeing twice during my short time here, though."
Jason listens as Va'ynna speaks, raising an eyebrow as it seems she's about to tell him something, but his gaze drifts back to Uvena as Va'ynna suggests they speak later. He gives the asari a nod, smirk still present on his face. "Hospital visits are never fun." he responds to the second asari, "I've certainly had more than my fair share of them." His hand glides down to his side and
makes an exaggerated pained expression as his hand rests on his wound. "Still recovering a bit myself." he adds, "I'm glad you're back on your feet, though. We've followed up on the ordeal and we're slowly getting to the bottom of it, I think."
Va'ynna nods, walks out of the room and closes the door behind her. She walks towards the reception to find a place to sit down.
Uvena leans forward a little. "What have you found out so far?" she asks. "I haven't seen or heard anything while at the hospital."
Jason goes quiet for a few moments, poking at his terminal a few times before returning his gaze to Uvena. "Well..." he begins with a sigh, "For starters, that turian who came after you won't be a problem anymore. He attacked our people and was killed in the exchange. We also managed to recover the vehicle. One of our employees met with Commander Arius of the militia to confirm what
the turian said of his involvement with them and, while Arius seemed to know who the turian was, he seemed to have no knowledge of what he was doing or why he was involved so heavily in a local businesses problems."
Jason sighs and gives a shake of his head. "We felt it was more important to follow the militia lead first, given the possible repercussions. Unfortunately, Redrock has a large security contract that needs to be handled over the next couple of weeks so I won't personally be able to follow up on this info. Two Redrock employees will continue digging, however. T'Iavay and Briggs. The
next step is for them to visit the dealership and try and settle this directly. Considering we have the vehicle, I don't see why that would be an issue. We simply return it in exchange for them dropping the issue with you."
Jason pokes at his terminal keyboard a few times and the screen flips, allowing Uvena to get a look at it. It's a fairly general map of Freedom Falls and the surrounding area. A few more keystrokes and a blip appears on the map. Another button-press and the photo of the turian near the car that Renala had taken shows up in the corner. "We found it right here. The turian was already
Uvena commits the position to memory, and nods. "She just... dropped it off out of town?" she asks. "I thought it would have been sold off by now."
Jason sighs and gives a shrug. "I don't know what that was all about, Uvena..." he admits, "And I'm not sure we ever will. I think the important thing is that we have the vehicle back right now."
Jason nods in turn. "Absolutely. As soon as they know anything, you'll know something." he ensures the asari, "But for now it's probably best if you stay away from your place. At least until they can speak to the people down at the dealership."
Uvena nods. "Understood," she says. "I take it you sent someone to collect my personal belongings at my apartment?"
Jason gives another nod. "Your things have been placed inside of the skycar. It's out in the hangar for now." he says, gesturing in the general direction, "You're free to collect them before you leave today."
Uvena nods, again. "Thank you," she says. "I really appreciate what you've done for me, Wolfe. If there is anything I can do to repay you, please tell me."
Jason taps a button, causing his screen to return to normal. "Now that you mention it, there actually is something you can do for me." he says, "You can take care of yourself. And take care of that daughter of yours." he adds with a nod towards the lobby.
Uvena smiles. "Of course," she says, "but is that really all you'll ask after getting me out of that kind of debt?"
Jason gives another nod followed by an apologetic tilt of his head. "Debt that wasn't exactly your fault..." he mutters, "Yeah."
Vasquez answers almost immediately from her seat in her office. "Redrock Agency, Chief Vasquez speaking."
Adam | The feed crackles for a minute before Adam's face becomes clear. He looks tired and depleted, his eyes sunken and his beard thick. He is dressed in his combat gear and from the background it looks like he is sat in an armoury. "Chief," he says courteously, inclining his head. "It's, uh, Adam Barclay calling."
Vasquez lets out a sigh, glancing off to the side for a moment before focusing her attention on the screen with furrowed eyebrows. "Is this about your brother?"
Adam pauses for a moment. "In a way," he says with a nod. "I take it Leah has made you... aware of what happened?"
Jason waves a hand dismissively. "It doesn't matter, we're on top of this, Uvena." he says, forcing a smirk, "So don't worry. Just keep yourself safe until we wrap this up, alright?"
Adam smiles faintly at the pleasantries. "Thank you," he says quietly. "I'm calling in regards to Leah's current solo mission on Omega. She's found a possible lead and she's asked me to look into it. A set of coordinates that she paid an extortionate amount for." He pauses for a moment before continuing. "And in the short amount of time she's been there she's
been kidnapped and has somehow become the ward of a freed slave... Which leads me to the main reason I called." He glances off to the side with a sigh before focusing back on Vasquez. "My brother's last act in this universe was to ensure her and her father's continued existence in this galaxy. I fear that given her current situation, she may not be around
Vasquez seems confused at first, but ends up looking past the screen. A quiet grunt escapes her as she thinks. "She's not on a mission. She left Redrock. She's on the run. I... didn't realize she'd been in touch with anyone. I'd be happy to offer our help if she wanted to, but she has declined so far."
Adam quirks an eyebrow. "I see. Yes, she contacted me saying that she clearly needed a hand. I would go and help myself... but I think my presence would only be detrimental to her and I think she's been through enough without me being there as a constant reminder." He sighs wearily, propping his elbows against the desk he is sat at. "If I can be honest with you,
Uvena gives an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I didn't mean to sound ungrateful," she says. She looks around the room thoughtfully. "To be honest, I was hoping I could work for you, Mr. Wolfe," she continues. "I'm almost out of credits, and I have nobody else in this town that I can trust right now."
Vasquez nods again. "I understand. I'll try to reach out to her, offer our assistance. We take care of our own, Barclay. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I-..." She closes her eyes, her professional expression broken as she takes trails off, taking a breath. "I am very sorry about what happened to your brother. It wa-..." She grunts, shaking her head and returning her gaze to the screen.
Jason tilts his head to the side, laying his hands out flat in front of him. "As much as I would love to welcome you onboard with open arms, understand that this is the sort of thing I can't exactly just agree to on good faith. The sort of work we do is dangerous, Uvena. And I'd never forgive myself if I let something happen to V's mother..." he trails off.
Adam falls silent, simply sitting there for a few pregnant moments. "We buried him the other day," he says quietly. "I've been to many funerals. Those of men under my command. Men and woman I came to call friends. But seeing him lowered into the dirt-". He catches himself and shudders. "I don't want his sacrifice to be in vein," he says with much more conviction.
Vasquez goes quiet as well, lowering her gaze. After a while she nods again. "Was... there anything else?" She says, her voice softer.
Adam shakes his head. "No, I don't believe so," he replies. His hand reaches over to cut off the call, but it lingers over the interface for a second. "...you and Mr. Wolfe were a credit to the Alliance." His face flickers out of existence as he cuts the call, leaving a black empty screen for Vasquez.
Uvena sighs. "This world is in and of itself dangerous," she says. "At least I'll be prepared for it when doing this sort of work." She glances at the door. "She will understand, and I'm certain she won't hold you accountable if I don't come home unharmed."
Nathan strides into the lobby with a slight spring to his step as he cradles a thermos. He's dressed in white motorcycle body armour with black accents and is carrying a corsair helmet underneath his arm. He's carrying a rucksack on his back, bulky and laden with bits and pieces. He pauses mid-step as he sees the asari sat in the lobby. "Hi there," he calls out,
Va'ynna gives a slight shake of her head. "No, thank you," she says, "I'm just... waiting for someone who's meeting with Jason."
Jason taps his fingers against the desk as he listens. "I've got no problem with it... but you do have experience in this field, right?"
Nathan nods once. "Right, right. Well, enjoy your day then, miss." He smiles politely and takes a sip of his thermos, the smell quite distinctly coffee. He makes to walk off and down the corridor and towards the staircase, his gaze naturally drawn to each door as he passes. If any are open, he would offer a smile to whomever occupies it.
Uvena nods. "I served with the military for a while," she says. "That's a long time ago now, though, and my most recent experience is low-risk security work on Illium and a few other asari colonies."
Jason lowers his gaze to the desk, nodding slowly. "Alright, Uvena. You talk this over with your daughter. Make sure she's alright with it. I'll consider it. We've got some big jobs coming up. How about you shoot your resume over this way and I'll talk it over with my partners?"
Nathan wanders up the stairs and towards the locker rooms to get changed. After a change into a simple white t-shirt, jeans and boots, he stows his motorcycle gear away and retraces his steps. He changes course and heads towards the general offices. He steps inside and heads to a nearby terminal.
Uvena has an amused look on her face for a moment, but nods. "Sounds good," she says. "You'll get the resume by the end of the day."
Jason nods once more. "Sounds good to me. Did you have any more questions?" he asks, "If not, I can show you to the hangar to pick your things up."
Uvena shakes her head, and stands up. "Not that I can think of right now," she says. "Again, thank you."
Jason nods, standing up in turn. "Don't mention it, Uvena." he says as he rounds the desk and opens his door. "Right this way." he instructs, leading her over to the intersection. "Hey, V!" he shouts as he reaches the intersecting hallway, "We're going to the hangar."
Va'ynna doesn't seem to respond, but it doesn't take long before she shows up walking down the hallway.
Jason waits for Va'ynna to join up before continuing down the hall towards the hangar and tapping the panel. "Your car is just inside. I think it's best if we hold on to the car itself so we can deal with the dealership on our own. Hope that's alright with you." he says, stepping just inside of the hangar.
Uvena nods. "That's no problem," she says. "I'm sure your people know what they're doing with the dealership."
The skycar is parked in the hangar a good distance from the Redrock shuttle. Inside are a few dufflebags, presumably filled with Uvena's things.
The skycar itself is in good condition. One would never have assumed it was shot to hell a few days prior. Jasper does good work.
Jason gestures towards the car. "Your stuff is inside. If you can't get it all today it's no big deal. Feel free to leave your stuff here as long as you need, nobody will mess with it."
Uvena walks over to the car, and looks into it. "I have to call a taxi anyway," she says, "so I might as well take everything with me."
Jason remains by Va'ynna as Uvena goes through her things. "So.... How's things?" he asks casually, folding his arms across his chest as he glances over at 'V'.
Va'ynna smiles. "I'm... fine," she says. "I, uh... had a little work accident, but... that's not a problem anymore." She looks a bit ashamed. "How... are you?" she asks, hoping to avoid having to elaborate.
Vasquez makes her way out of her office and towards Renala's, pressing the interface to open the door and then folding her hands behind her back.
Renala opens the door remotely via omni-tool, but she is not at her desk. The door to the inner room is closed, but unlocked.
Vasquez raises an eyebrow, stepping in to the office and then heading for the door to the VI mainframe, once again pressing the interface to open it.
Va'ynna frowns as well. "I.. was helping Shyva'Nahl getting a dart down from the ceiling," she begins. "I used biotics that I... have not really practiced, and I... may have stood too close."
Renala is standing before the mainframe, whose 'fridge doors' have been opened. She's typing on the support element, which is a collapsable terminal attached to the mainframe. "Here about the VI?" Renala asks, not taking her eyes of the screen.
Jason raises an eyebrow. "Are you saying you dropped a dart on yourself...?" he asks. A slight smirk tugs at his lips, "Are you alright...?"
Renala looks at the screen, which scrolling output came to an end without any red messages bearing bad news. A lot of yellow lines, however, warning her about this and that. "I was running some tests," she says. "I think it should be ready for deployment, but all systems will need to be restarted to bring it online."
Va'ynna nods. "I'm fine," she says, "but yes... that is exactly what happened, and... the needle got deep into my foot." She looks down, her cheeks getting a slightly deeper shade of purple.
Jason lets slip a short chuckle. He quickly brings his hands up, palms towards the asari. "I'm sorry, V! It's not funny, really! I just-... I'm glad you're alright." he apologizes through a wide smile, "You have to be more careful! Lucky it didn't take your eye out. But nothing to be ashamed of... We all have accidents." He leans in and lowers his voice to a mock whisper, "Don't tell
anyone, but that's the exact same way I lost my arm. Dart took it right off!" he jokes, hoping to alleviate some of the asari's embarassment.
Vasquez nods. "That should be fine, just give me a sec." She takes out her omni-tool and activates comms. "We're gonna do a restart of the base's systems. Anyone doing something that needs to be saved before we pull the plug?"
Va'ynna giggles. "Of course, that's.... That makes sense," she says before her smile fades. "Patrons shouldn't throw darts at the ceiling, either. Aylena would not have let that happen."
Uvena picks up two bags and start making her way out of the hangar. "No, I don't need help," she says to Va'ynna who looked like she was about to ask anything.
Jason reaches into his pocket as Vasquez' voice comes over the comms system. He pokes at it a few times, raising a single finger to Va'ynna before speaking into the omni-tool, "Nah, I'm good. Do what you need to do." He places the small object back into his pocket and returns his attention to Va'ynna. "Well, Aylena is back now." he says before furrowing his brow and cocking his head
Va'ynna nods. "She has," she says. "I met her the day she returned. She wasn't very specific, but she said that you helped her out of trouble. "
Renala keeps the support element logged in as she walks past Vasquez out into her office. "On your order, chief," she says before taking a seat at her desk.
Jason gives a couple nods. "Well, Vasquez led a team, but yeah. Redrock gave a helping hand. How is she?" he asks, "Happy to be back? Is she managing the Respite again?"
Va'ynna nods. "She seems to be," she says. "And yeah, she's resumed her position as manager. I... will miss Kanaya. She was more... approachable, I suppose, and wasn't... as critical when I needed time off."
Does this mean Kanaya is leaving? I'd think Aylena would keep her onboard. We all know the Respite needs more workers...
The screens in Renala's office (except for the two large ones and her terminal) and in the VI core is the first to go dark. Then any dimmable lights flashes off before turning on at a maxed state. All door interfaces follows. The screens behind Renala shows several entries switching status from 'online' to 'offline', and about half of them are offline right now with more of them following suit every second.
Va'ynna frowns. "I know, but... Kanaya was only supposed to step in for her mother," she says. "She... does work at the bar, but... she's a worse bartender than I am. Ennik seems to know what he's doing, but... I think he's leaving with Kanaya."
Uvena is on her way back when the lights change, and she stops for a moment. She continues her return to the hangar with more cautious steps.
Jason lets out a short chuckle and gives a shake of his head. "Well, it was good while it lasted, eh?" he says with a sigh. "Speaking of taking off, I'm going to be heading out for some work in the next few days. It's going to take a couple weeks." he says, giving a shrug, "So I won't be around for a little while. But! As soon as I get back, I'll come visit you. Like I said, there's
Once the last thing goes offline, so does the two screens. It takes about five seconds for the screens to come back up with the network status. A last device, titled 'VI' is among the listed items. From top-left to bottom-right, they start to come online one by one. The door interfaces also return, with all private offices locked. Soon after, the cameras make a return and so do their video feeds. The entire process takes about a minute, and
Va'ynna offers a small smile. "I've... missed you too," she says before wrapping her arms around him and hugging him, giving almost no warning. "What is the job you're going on?"
Fergus appears in the VI mainframe room's holoprojector - a grizzled, beared man wearing a set of battlescarred plate armor, a sword holstered on his hip. The projection bows a moment after materializing. "Fergus at your service, miladies. Reporting for VI orienteering."
Jason gives a chuckle at the unexpected hug and wraps his synthetic arms around the asari, giving her pat on the shoulders. "Just a security gig. Have you heard about the joint expedition between ExoGeni and the Syranis Foundation setting out from Freedom Falls?" he asks, hiding his distaste for ExoGeni, "We'll be running the security."
