#RedrockAgency – May 14, 2018
Ehanis is in the gym running on one of the treadmills. The asari appears to be tired and exhausted, but she keeps running and staring at the wall behind it. She does take occasional short breaks by stepping on the edges of the machine, though. Ehanis wasn't there when Jason and Vasquez left to have their breakfast at the Respite.
Vasquez went to work after her and Jason's return from breakfast. A brief respite from the preparations ahead of her. She manages only a couple of hours of work however before the relatively high spirits brought on by her time with Jason is spent, and she soon leaves for the gym after changing into her workout wear, a pair of gray shorts and a white tanktop. She casts a brief, distracted glance towards Ehanis as she
enters. She'd hoped to have the place to herself, but she's not surprised to see someone present. It was one of the perks Redrock offered its employees after all. She puts a towel and water bottle down on one of the benches and starts to warm up without really greeting the asari.
Ehanis reaches for the safety cord (or whatever mechanism these have to immediately stop it) when she spots Vasquez entering the room, but she lets go off it as it looks like she's not about to be interrupted. She lets out a scoff between panting breaths, for she was also hoping to have the place for herself. Ehanis grabs the handle as she reads the time off the display, but she immediately retracts it with a
sharp inhale as that put strain. For a moment it seems like she's going to fall off by the distraction, but she manages to regain her balance and continue her run; staring at the wall behind it just a little bit harsher. Ehanis is wearing short red shorts and a sweat-soaked white shirt over a sports bra.
Vasquez spares another glance Ehanis' way as the asari stumbles, but offers no comment as she sits into one of the weight machines, starting her workout routine in silence. It had been a struggle to regain her soldier's physique after the Ardat-Yakshi. Months in bed and damaged motor skills had done a number on her, but she'd found her way back. She wasn't about to let the pregnancy take that away from her.
Ehanis continues in silence for another few moments, though she is starting to struggle to keep pace with the belt. "How do you deal with all this shit?" she blurts out between panting breaths, not looking away from the wall in front of her.
Vasquez furrows her eyebrows, a little caught off-guard by the sudden question. She pauses mid-workout with a grunt just as she's started to work up a sweat, sitting up and looking towards Ehanis. "What's that, Tioran?"
Ehanis reaches over to stop the treadmill, and the belt slows down to a stop. "How do you deal with all this shit?" Ehanis repeats herself before turning towards her, frustration etched into her face. "The collectors." She takes another few breaths before adding, "You've exchanged blows with them for years."
Vasquez stares at Ehanis for a couple of seconds before snorting and reaching for her water bottle taking a swig as she considers the question. "We have." she concedes as she closes the bottle, turning it in her hands as she glances back to the asari after letting her gaze wander while thinking. "Hasn't been by choice." she adds, a sudden tiredness coming over her face as she lets out a sigh. "How we deal with it? Well...
still figuring that part out, I think." she says, her gaze wandering again, across the gym, to the memorial wall. The plaques on it. "I don't have the answers, Tioran. Not enough, anyway."
Ehanis stares back at her, unwavering for a few seconds before she breaks her gaze to continue catching her breath. "I don't know why I asked," she says. "Yeah, that question is why I'm here, but I think I've already got the-… my answer." Or, she's unsatisfied with her answer. The frustration in her voice is only growing. "I need to get away," Ehanis says followed by a sigh. "Go ahead, tell me just how much
of a fucking coward I am. I don't care." She grits, flaring her biotics for a moment as she steps in an arbitrary direction away from Vasquez.
Vasquez raises an eyebrow as she looks back to Ehanis, looking a little puzzled by the dramatic asari. Those words are aimed at someone that isn't here, aren't they? She shrugs. "This your way of quitting, Tioran?" she asks, furrowing her eyebrows as she swings her leg over to the same side as the other, leaning forward and going back to turning the bottle in her hands. "This shit's not what you had in mind when joining.
I get it. Trust me. So if you want out? Go right ahead. I don't have any use for unwilling employees. Not in this line of work."
Ehanis shakes her head, not turning to face her. "This shit is exactly what I had in mind when joining," Ehanis says, still sounding frustrated. "I've heard the stories, and I was even looking forward to it." She sighs and turns back to face her, casting a glance at the plaque. "I'll work through with it," she snorts, "I've done that a million times already, but I can't do that here."
Vasquez seems unamused by Ehanis' words, nodding slowly as her expression grows colder. "So this is your way of asking for time off." she states. "Hardly the time, Tioran. I have no intention of putting those of you that were on the last mission back in the field yet, but there's a lot of work to be done, especially after what happened."
Ehanis shakes her head again. "No, no, you were right earlier, I am quitting," Ehanis says with a sigh. "I don't know how much time I need away from this, away from-... Agh, it doesn't matter. I quit, simple as that." She turns away and takes a few steps towards the door before stopping again. "Could you wait until tomorrow to write it down?" she asks without looking back.
Vasquez shakes her head with a grunt. "You're not leaving before the debrief. I need reports and input from everyone that was on mission." she says, turning to follow Ehanis with her gaze as the asari heads for the door.
Ehanis lets out a deep sigh and stops. "I was never alone, and didn't see anything someone else didn't see," she says, not sounding any less frustrated. "I need to leave today." She continues towards the door, not intending to wait for Vasquez to answer. It's not going to stop her anyway.
Vasquez lets out a frustrated sigh as Ehanis leaves the room, making no attempt to stop her. The young asari had been a headache for quite a while now, and Redrock could manage without her. A message to remind her that cutting and running before payment is an unwise move should be enough to bring her in for the debrief, hopefully. She shakes her head, making a mental note to speak with Ilyna soon as she returns to her
Ehanis enters the locker room to shower and change, after which she'll leave the building without talking to anyone beyond a curt dismissal.
