Jason is seated at the bar by himself. For once, he's not wearing his hardsuit, just a brown jacket and a black pair of fatigues with boots. He's propping his head up with his hand, and an empty shot glass sits beside a nearly empty glass.
#Miner'sRespite – April 19, 2014
Zaylus enters the Respite, deliberate in his steps as he makes he way across the floor. He wears his standard armor, carries a Carnifex at the waist, and has a small pouch slung over his shoulder, most likely to carry small effects for travel. The turian glances around the bar casually, seemingly to look for something. It's unclear whether or not he's satisfied when he sits down at the bar, just a seat over from Jason, and he doesn't regard him as he places the bag at his own feet.
Jason pushes his empty shot glass across the counter quite aggressively. "Another..." he orders. It's quite clear that he's probably had a few too many already.
Zaylus eyes Jason, curiously rather than automatically sharp. "Hey, Boss." He says, surprisingly void of sarcasm.
Jason looks towards Zaylus. Upon realizing who it is, he straightens up his posture a bit. He turns his focus back to the shotglass as it's refilled. "Zaylus..." he says, forcing a smirk, "Welcome back..."
Zaylus manages a grin, "Thanks. Now you can stop drinking yourself onto the floor because you miss me so much." He says, though still rather dull and uninterested. He shifts a bit in his seat, casting glances behind the bar.
Jason chuckles to himself and slugs back the shot. He cringes slightly at the burn before setting the glass back down. After a long drawn out sigh, he faces Zaylus, "Where the fuck were you?" he asks.
Zaylus nods, knowing the question was soon to come. He straightens up, though averts his gaze somewhat. "I went... home." He says simply, acompanying it with a curt nod. With a short laugh he looks to Jason and adds, "Never thought I'd say that again."
Jason raises an eyebrow. "Home? The hell does that mean? Off visiting the family while we were-... Were out there on that fucking rock being torn apart?" he asks, not making a whole lot of sense.
Zaylus appears rather confused. "Do you think- ... what?" He searches for the words, but comes up with nothing. "What are you talking about?"
Halisi enters the Respite, looking around apprehensively at the patrons. She's wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a nondescript print. Her long black hair is flipped back. She moves over to the bar and waves for the bartender. She glances to her sides as she waits for her drink, clearly not too comfortable around the patrons.
Jason frowns, staring hard at Zaylus, "We were torn apart out there..." he begins before shaking his head hard, "...No-... I'm sorry." he sighs, "It's not your fault... Just wish you could've been out there with us. We could've used the help."
Zaylus frowns, "Trust me, if I had known this was an alternative, I wouldn't have so quick to hop systems."
Halisi receives her drink - something pink in a tall glass, and sips it as she looks around. When she notices Jason she moves around a seated patron and taps his shoulder.
Jason shakes his head. "It doesn't matter now-..." he begins, but is interrupted by the doctor. He turns to look at her, attempting to focus through the haze brought on by a mass amount of alcohol. "Doc." he says plainly, "Hey..."
Va'ynna descends the staircase, glancing over the floor as she does so. Spotting Jason and Zaylus, a small smile creeps up and she starts making her way towards them. Seeing a stranger among them, however, she takes a seat four seats on Zaylus' right. The asari's clad in a dark-green dress.
Halisi offers a faint smile at Jason. "Hey. Vasquez didn't mention you were here." She says and sips from her drink again.
Zaylus looks at the Doctor as she approaches, looking between the two for a moment before facing forward again, unsure of the nature of the meeting. He glances to his right as movement catches his eye. The turian quickly brightens, a smile appearing. "Hey, Va'ynna." He greets with a wave, signalling her closer.
Halisi looks slightly surprised. "Oh. I see. Well... thanks again for the rescue." She studies the drunk man awkwardly for a moment. "I'm not sure if she mentioned, but she's hired me."
Va'ynna gets up at the turian's beckon and makes her way over to sit beside him. "Hey," she says, smiling as well. "It's good to... see you two are back."
Jason snorts loudly. "Mentioned it? Nah, why would she mention it. Not like I help run the place or anything..." he mutters, "She'll just drop a fuck ton of rookies in my lap that I've never even met, send me off to fight who-the-fuck-knows-what, and expect me to bring them all back alive." he groans, quite clearly frustrated.
Zaylus glances once behind him before returning his focus to the asari. "Yeah, apparently he had some adventure of his own. How have you been?" He asks, interested.
Halisi nods slowly and forces an uncomfortable smile. "O... kay. Just thought I would mention it. I just couldn't continue to work for the company after... after what happened..."
Va'ynna looks over at Jason with a raised eyebrow before addressing the turian. "Um, bored, just... working," she says. "Ay-... D'Inea told me you were all away."
Jason shifts in place, but continues to prop his head up with his hand. He stares directly at Halisi quietly for a few moments. "What's Londinium's connection to Exo-Geni?" he asks, as if it's a sure thing that there's some sort of connection between the two.
Zaylus nods, kicking a bit at the bag beneath his feet. "I don't know what our friend here was doing, but he made it sound... exciting." He says, a touch quieter than normal. "Don't you wish you were that line of business." He jokes.
Jason shakes his head, but continues to stare at the doctor awkwardly. "No reason..." he says quietly before rubbing at his face, "Are you-... Are you sure?" he presses, "No mention of them? Nothing?"
Va'ynna tilts he head. "I'm... even afraid of going... outside," she says. "I'd... do badly in your line of work."
Jason slams a fist hard against the counter but quickly winces and looks around apologetically, spotting Va'ynna in the process. He takes a deep breath as he begins to rub his fingers through his hair. "Hey V..." he says without looking towards the asari.
Zaylus shrugs half-heartedly. "Who knows, maybe you have a lot of untapped potential." He says, clearly less than serious. He glances back at Jason, and then to the woman standing nearby. "Mmhm." The turian hums thoughtfully.
Halisi doesn't flinch - or blink, when Jason slams his fist against the counter. "I... think I'm gonna go now." She glancs over her shoulder before starting to move away.
Va'ynna flinches at the sound of Jason slamming his fist, staring at him for a few seconds. "Hey... Jason," she says in a low voice. "I... um, could throw a stasis field and run. I think that's... about all of it.."
Jason puts up a hand and begins to rise from his stool. When he realizes how off his sense of balance is, he grips the edge of the counter and reclaims his seat. "No, you don't have to-... I'm sorry." he sighs, "Just... Sit. Have a drink." he gestures towards the stool beside him.
Zaylus looks back to Va'ynna, grinning slightly. "Hey, it's better than some I've seen before. They didn't even know how to run."
Halisi stops, considering for a moment before sitting down in the recently available seat. She nods slightly at Jason and sips her drink.
Va'ynna can't help but grin a little. "Oh?" she says. "But... still, there's shooting. And, um, getting shot at."
Jason nods to nobody in particular and slugs back the rest of his drink. He raises a hand towards the bartender. "Give me another." he says, pushing both the glass and shot glass across the counter, "One of each. And-..." he looks over at Zaylus and Va'ynna, "Them too. Get 'em a drink."
Zaylus nods agreeingly, "Yeah, that part's a bitch." he admits. He catches a piece of the other's conversation and chuckles lightly, gesturing toward them as he directs a question to Va'ynna. "What have we been missing over there?" He says.
Va'ynna glances over at the other two. "A... lot, it seems," she says, keeping her voice down a little. "You... weren't part of it? I thought... all of you went."
Halisi nods while sipping her drink. She seems about to say something when her omni-tool bleeps. After checking it she sighs. "I have to go. Just... take it easy with the drinks." She stands up and leaves in a hurry, leaving her half-empty glass behind.
Zaylus shakes his head, "No, unfortunately I missed that little adventure." He says, a moment before adding, "Or, of course, fortunately."
Jason glances around as he waits for the bartender to get around to refilling his drinks. Once Halisi is out of sight, he reaches over and grabs the doctor's half-empty drink and pulls it in front of him. He gives another quick look around before taking a large swig from the glass. "So what was this trip home about?" he asks as he continues to watch the bartender. He doesn't seem to care too much about whether he's interrupting the two.
Zaylus blinks, looking to face Jason. He tries to begin, uncomfortable with the question but obviously inclined to answer for his absense. "Ahh, you know... family." He says in a dismissive manner. "What can you do?"
Va'ynna looks a little confused at first, but she finds herself nodding slightly at the turian's answer.
Jason takes another sip of his rescued drink. "Family... Nothing but headaches in that department." he snorts, "Seemed pretty fucking sudden, though. Everything good?"
Zaylus considers this a minute, expression shifting from a grin to uncomfortable grimace. "Well, 'sudden' is a good way of putting it. Things like this don't usually come with a lot of warning." He says, shifting in his seat. "But that's not really important."
Jason looks past the turian to Va'ynna. He clears his throat and shrugs before lowering his gaze back to the counter for a moment. "A lot of people died..." he says, barely above a whisper, "It was pretty bad." he adds, glancing towards Zaylus.
Va'ynna tilts her head sympathetically, looking a little ashamed for asking. "Oh...," she begins. "I'm sorry... to hear that." She don't know what else to say, though.
Zaylus shakes his head, "I'm sorry, Jason." He says sincerely. He looks on, unsure how to proceed. "...How many of ours?" He asks carefully.
Jason bites his lower lip for a moment and empties out the rest of his newly aquired drink. "Two of ours." he says plainly, "One hundred-thirteen miners. Eleven crew onboard our escort ship." He reaches up and rubs at his forehead once again and blinks hard, "All dead. Plenty of others wounded."
Va'ynna doesn't really know what to say, an expression of worry forming on her face as she knew quite a few working for Redrock, though some only barely.
Zaylus presses a hand against the back of his head. "Shhhit." He says quietly in place of actual conversation. "And that woman? She was involved?"
Jason nods slowly. "One of the lucky few we managed to rescue. It was-... A mess. Steve nearly had his fucking arm ripped off... One of the new recruits did have part of his arm ripped off." he shakes his head, "We were hit hard. It was a fucking miracle any of us made it." he immediately looks towards the bartender, "Some time today?" he calls out as he nudges his glasses once again.
Aylena sighs, as she's just done serving another patron that signaled for her before Jason did. "Patience," she says as she makes her way over to him. "You wanted a refill, right?"
Va'ynna frowns. "Oh... Goddess," she says. "Do I know anyone," she fidgets a bit with her hands, "anyone that... didn't... make it?"
Aylena nods and goes off to find the respective bottles. She returns a few seconds later and pours the two glasses for him. "There," she says, beofre she's off to serve another patron right away.
Jason shakes his head as he watches Aylena pour his drinks, "No. But everyone was banged up pretty badly." he sighs, "They'll be alright though."
Zaylus nods along, "Good, good." He mutters, looking down. "Did you mention that one... Renala? She doing alright?"
Jason grabs the shot glass and stares at it for a few moments, looking as though he's contemplating whether or not to actually drink it.
Zaylus hums, "Hmm, alright." he says plainly, reaching down to pick up the small pouch placed at his feet. He gets up off the stool, slining the bag over his shoulder. "I have to do a few things before I can get settled in again." The turian explains, taking a step back. "I'll, uh, talk to you two later." He promises, giving a departing wave.
Jason gives the turian a half-hearted wave but doesn't say anything. He slugs back the shot and struggles to keep it down for a moment.
Va'ynna looks over at Jason as the turian walks away. "Are you... alright?" she asks, recalling his earlier attempt at standing.
Jason waves off the asari with a short smile, "I'll be fine, V." he says, "What about you? What's been goin' on around here?"
Va'ynna glances towards the back door. "I've been... working," she says. "Alex wasn't here, either, and the rest of you were... not here."
Jason lowers his head at the mention of Alex. "She was with us." he sighs, "Signed up for the job for some reason. She almost didn't make it..."
Jason nods a few times and takes a sip of his drink. "She's alive. Not for a lack of trying on her part..." he mutters.
Va'ynna looks at the counter. "It's... I don't know," she says. "Wasn't she... worried she wasn't old enough to... uh, serve drinks?"
Jason sighs and returns to propping his head up with his hand. "Yeah... Apparently alcohol is more of an issue for her than guns..."
Jason shakes his head. "I couldn't tell ya. If it were up to me, I would've turned her away. But I didn't handle the hiring on this one." he sighs, "I don't know what she was thinking..."
Va'ynna tilts her head. "She? The... uh, boss-lady?" she says, not recalling her name. "Isn't... eighteen a little young to be a... mercenary, too?"
Never too young to be a mercenary... But she's definitely too green. It was a bad call, and I should've spoke up...
Va'ynna nods. "I...," she says. "What was... the job about?" She pauses before quickly adding, "If I can ask, of course."
Jason goes quiet for an uncomfortable amount of time, holding his drink with both hands. Eventually he sighs and leans back in his seat. "We were hired to check on a mine that went quiet. Rescue workers if it was needed."
Va'ynna | "What... happened there?" she asks, sounding a little nervous doing so. "It... didn't sound like it went well."
Jason sucks in a deep breath and lowers his head. He slowly lifts his drink to his lips and takes a long swig. "I don't know..." he says as his gaze settles distantly on the counter, "Everything went wrong... We thought maybe batarians attacked the mine but-..." he shakes his head and goes quiet for a moment, "It was something else..."
Va'ynna nods slowly. "I... I'm sorry," she says. "I shouldn't have-." A beep from her omni-tool interrupts her and after a cursory glance at the screen before shutting it off, she stands up. "I should get going."
Va'ynna smiles weakly before she makes her way around the counter and through the door to the staff area.
Jason waves the asari off and remains at the bar for quite some time, putting down a few more drinks.
