#Hospital – September 3, 2015
Va'ynna enters the hospital, and approaches the VI. She hasn't sent a message ahead of her arrival, assuming he still is at the hospital.
Jason is, in fact, still at the hospital. In the same room. Still watching asajura highlights. It's pretty much all he's been doing all day, aside from bothering the staff. He's attempting to do push-ups with his new arms, but it's not going particularly well. He's just laying in the middle of the room on the floor.
Va'ynna frowns at seeing the VI being out of commission, and decides against asking it. She looks around for a nurse.
The VI seems to be turned off completely right now. A small sign nearby says "Temporarily turned off for maintenance. Sorry for the inconvenience." (Jason_Wolfe)
Va'ynna walks down the hall towards the nurses. "Excuse me," she says once she's within their earshot, looking a bit nervous. "Can you tell me... where Jason... Wolfe is?"
The nurse seems to wince at the mere mention of the man. The nurse she's speaking to suppresses a laugh as the first puts on her best smile and turns to face Va'ynna. "Of course! He's currently staying in 'Surgical Recovery'." she says, pointing down the hallway, "You should be able to reach him by following the signs." (Jason_Wolfe)
Va'ynna tilts her head at first, but then nods. "Thank you," she says, and follows the first sign labeled 'surgical recovery' she can find.
Va'ynna wouldn't have much trouble finding Jason's room. A small removeable plastic nameplat reading: J.Wolfe is right outside the door. It's slightly ajar (Jason_Wolfe)
Jason grunts loudly as a bit of pain surges through his upper chest. He pants a bit as the knock grabs his attention. "Yeah. Come on in." he shouts as he clambers onto his knees.
Va'ynna pushes the door open and steps inside, looking around the room before her gaze settles on Jason.
Jason struggles for a moment as he climbs to his feet, his two arms slowly lowering back to his side cautiously. "Hey! V!" he says, a genuine smile crossing his face, "Sorry, just doing a little working out." He scrunches up his nose and glances at the ground where he was kneeling, "Well, trying to anyway. Not that the new arms need it or anything... Mainly just trying to get a feel for
Va'ynna stares at his arms while he's talking. "I'm... fine. The one D'Inea sent to step in for her arrived this morning, and... she gave me the rest of the day off," she says with a smile, but eventually it fades as she asks, "Why... are both your arms like that?"
Jason gives a nod as Va'ynna speaks. "That's great, V! You deserve some time off." he says as she pauses and examines his arms. He looks down at them himself, slowly extending them out in front of himself, his smile fading with the asari's. "The Doc assured me it would... help." he says, tilting his head to the side, "I'm going to bring Linda home and I'm gonna need all the help I can get
so..." he trails off, his expression turning slightly grim as he continues to stare down at his hands, slowly rotating the wrists back and forth.
Jason takes a couple steps back and parks his ass on the edge of the bed. He nods towards the spot beside him. "I don't know what I'm doing, V." he admits with a shake of his head, "I'm trying. I'm doing the best I can, but it's just never good enough. Things keep going wrong, no matter what I do. I don't-..." he lowers his gaze back to his hands once more, "....I don't know if I made the
Va'ynna takes the seat beside him after a moment's hesitation. "I... I don't think there's... anything wrong with wanting to go through... that to get someone you love back," she says, and looks down at the floor. "I would... do the same in that... situation if I wasn't.... If I could fight."
Jason slowly raises his arm, looking a bit nervous as he does his best to control it. Eventually, the hand comes down on Va'ynna's shoulder, although the grip doesn't close. Jason merely pats her shoulder awkwardly. "You're a lot braver than you give yourself credit for, V. And you've got the biggest heart I've ever seen." He gives an honest, if a bit sad, smile. He continues with a loud
sigh, "I'm just afraid it might be too late regardless of what I do... Not sure what I'll do if that's the case. Feel like I'm drowning without her. As much as it pains me to admit-..." he lowers his head and gives it a shake as he chuckles, "...She kept all of this together. Me. Redrock. Everything."
Va'ynna looks a bit nervous as the mechanical arm gets near her, tensing up. She eventually relaxes, and leans slightly towards him. Her cheeks grow a little bit more purple at the compliments. "Do... you know where to look for her?" she asks.
Jason gives a nod. "I do... Kind of." he admits, "I have a lead. As soon as I get a bit more control over these, we'll be heading out." He glances down towards the floor with a shrug, "Doc says it's irreversible, though. I will literally never feel anything ever again with my hands..."
Va'ynna frowns. "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that," she begins, not sure what to say. "It's... great that you care so much for her, though. I hope... it all goes well."
Jason gives a couple short nods. A few moments of silence pass before he lets a long drawn-out sigh escape. "How about you?" he asks, "The new arrivals at the Respite seem like they'll work out? I haven't been able to catch up with you much lately, you probably got all sorts of shit going on now, huh?"
Va'ynna nods. "I... had to practically manage...Miner's Respite without having access to... D'Inea's computer to do... much of what a manager does," she says. "They... seem nice enough. She brought... a friend, too. A salarian. He... offered to take over for me at the bar until... Abnus' shift. I... was worried for you... ever since I heard you were here."
Jason gives a lopsided smirk, using his hand on the asari's shoulder to pull her closer for a side-hug as she mentions being worried. His lack of control probably makes the hug a bit more erratic and sharp, but nothing dangerous. "You don't need to worry about me, V. Gonna take more than a few missing body parts to keep me out of commission. I'll be fine. So, you talk to them about maybe
hiring some more staff? Stretching two bartenders out to cover every shift is asking a whole lot of you guys..."
Va'ynna gasps as she's pulled in, but relaxes after a few seconds. "I... did mention that, and she said... Briggs have already mentioned it," she says. "They'd... have to..., because I'm... going to work in the kitchen again." She pauses. "And... that won't stop me from... worrying. T'Iavay... is probably sick of me asking her so... often about you when you were gone last time."
Jason gives a slight chuckle and a nod, resting his chin against the top of Va'ynna's head. "Fair enough. Suppose I should go ahead and give you a heads up, then: We'll probably be gone about a week this time. Shouldn't run us any longer than that, though. I'll be stationing Ilyna's sister at the Respite. Not sure if you've had a chance to meet her, Ehanis?" he asks.
Va'ynna nods faintly. "She... told me when I served her... drinks last time," she says. "She... probably knows me as that... boring bartender who told her she's had... enough to drink, though. I... haven't met her outside of work."
Jason frowns. "Well, she'll be looking over things until we get back. Keep an eye on her. Make sure she does her job. She may have Li with her-...." he pauses, realizing he should probably elaborate, "Ilyna's kid. She'll probably be looking out for Ilyna's kid. Make sure she takes care of her."
Va'ynna smiles. "We... have a break room that we... never use," she says. "I can prepare for her to stay in there when... Ehanis is busy." Va'ynna pauses, the smile fading. "I... guess Ilyna is coming with you, then," she says. "The... kid worried a lot for her... when she was up with you."
Jason gives a slow nod. "Li has been through a lot. Poor thing." He sighs loudly, "She lost her parents when we were on that last job..." he says, choosing to leave the details out, "...A part of me wishes I could leave Ilyna behind. Just to make sure nothing happens to her." He tilts his head to the side and glances towards the screen as a pang of guilt shoots through him, "The truth is,
I'm just... scared. I don't know what we'll find. What we'll run into. The idea of having one of my closest friends out there with me is-... comforting." He returns his attention to the asari he's leaning against, "You think that's selfish?"
Va'ynna shakes her head. "She... is leading the agency with you,... isn't she?" she says. "It's... probably a good idea that... she is on such an important... mission,"
Jason gives a slow nod. "She's known Linda for a while, too. Maybe she doesn't have quite as much of a stake in this as I do, but still..." he trails off.
Va'ynna looks thoughtful for a moment. "Isn't she... good with barriers?" she asks. "She... offered to teach me that, once, but... I think she must have forgotten."
Jason gives a nod. "She's definitely an asset in the field. I guess I just worry that I keep putting everyone around me in danger... Where does it end, ya know? This is a pattern. Things always come crashing down around me, and when the dust clears, it's just me." He hangs his head.
Va'ynna frowns. "You... should take a break," she says. "After this job..., I mean. Let... Ilyna and... Linda run the agency."
Jason shakes his head. "Supposing we do manage to bring Linda back in one piece... I can't imagine she'll be in any shape to just jump back into running things. Hell, she was ready to call it quits before that last job." He suddenly goes quiet and lowers his gaze towards the ground, "I.... I talked her out of it." he says with a nod, the guilt of his actions clearly weighing on him.
Va'ynna is quiet for a few seconds. "I'm... sorry," she says. "Is Ilyna the only one else you trust... to run the agency?"
Jason shakes his head. "Ilyna... Tess-... Kim." he corrects, "It's not that I don't trust the rest. It's just... They're employees, you know?" he asks, glancing over at Va'ynna, "Ilyna and Kim are friends. Family. We've been through a lot together. But I hate even putting that burden on them."
Va'ynna nods. "I'm just an employee, too," she says, "and... the Miner's Respite didn't fall apart when I... did what I could to manage it. I... wouldn't ask for that job willingly, though."
You're not an ordinary employee, V. It's a lot to ask of your average employee... Most just want to collect their paycheck and go home, ya know?
Va'ynna nods, again. "I understand," she says. "I guess... D'Inea gave me so... many different tasks that it was... natural I take care of the place when she was gone."
My employees don't really know the first thing about what I do... Hell, I hardly know how to handle all the paperwork.
Jason gives a chuckle, but it slowly turns into a sigh. "That was always Linda's job... I'm just making it up as I go along."
Va'ynna can't help but giggle, looking a bit embarrased as he continues. "I... did very little paperwork, I only took some calls from people that... were getting impaient with D'Inea," she says. "So... I can't share... any insights into that."
Jason shrugs. "I've just begun pawning it all off on Ilyna. She's much better with all that crap." he admits, "But still... Point is, I can't just expect someone to hop into my seat and do everything I do on a whim-... whatever it is I do...."
Va'ynna hums. "That's... why I've almost never seen her since... you returned," she says, not sounding too serious.
Jason nods slowly and chuckles, "Between all of that and raising a kid, it's gotta be tough." he agrees.
Va'ynna nods. "Why... is she taking care of her?" she asks. "I... don't think that goes... well with her... line of work."
Jason nods slowly. "...Yeah." he says, "Hopefully she can manage. I'm gonna do everything I can to help her out. You know what they say, 'it takes a village to raise a kid', or some shit like that."
Va'ynna smiles. "I... suppose that's true," she says. "I'm... worried she won't... take Ilyna leaving very well, even if... it's just for a few days."
Jason lets out a deep breath, "Probably not a good time for people to just be entering and leaving her life, either... With losing her parents such a short time ago. There's just not a lot we can do. It was either this, or pass the responsibility off to the authorities..."
Va'ynna frowns, taking about five seconds before she speaks. "They... might know how to help her, though," she says. "I... don't think Ilyna is a... bad mother, but... it's... not safe out here."
Jason gains an uncomfortable look on his face and tilts his head to the side. "I-..." he begins but seems to rethink it, "...This is what Ilyna thinks is best." he says, thinking better than commenting directly on how he feels about it, "So, like I said, I'm gonna do whatever I can to help her out. It'll be fine." He nods and forces a smile.
Va'ynna looks thoughtful, but eventually nods. "She... does seem to like Ilyna," she says, "so I suppose that's... what the girl wants."
Jason leans away from Va'ynna for a moment to get a better look at her, "Say.... how do you feel about babysitting?" he asks with a lopsided smirk.
Va'ynna raises an eyebrow. "Me? I... can't do that," she says. "I... can help Ehanis with it, though."
Va'ynna frowns. "But... I haven't... done thet before then," she murmurs, "and... she has Ehanis to look after her."
Jason gives a shrug. "Maybe." he says, "She hasn't spoke to Ehanis about it yet. I mean, I assume Ehanis is gonna say yes, but-..." he tilts his head, giving the asari the puppy dog eyes, "If not...? Can I count on you to take over...?
Va'ynna takes a deep breath while considering it, the nods. "I'll... look after her if Ehanis can't," she says. "Also, should I... put anything she orders on... Ilyna's tab?"
Jason gives a shake of his head. "No... No... Put it on the Redrock tab." he says with a nod, "She's gonna be gone because of me, so I should be the one to cover the kid's tab."
Va'ynna nods. "I won't... let her live on snacks, though, so don't... worry about the tab getting... too big," she says, followed by a short giggle.
Jason chuckles loudly, "She's still got a few more years before we can turn her into an alcoholic like the rest of us!"
Va'ynna nudges Jason with her elbow, but she does laugh at him. "I... would never do that," she says.
Jason lets out a deep breath and smiles at Va'ynna. "Thanks for coming, V. Nothing cheers me up quite like seeing you."
Va'ynna looks away, her cheeks getting quite a bit more purple. "I.... um, I'm... glad I... got a chance to visit," she says.
Me too. I should be getting out in the next few days, though. Maybe when I get out you and I can go do a little shopping? Can't imagine you've had much of a chance to get out of that place and pick up supplies since Aylena disappeared.
Va'ynna considers it for a moment. "I... I'd love to," she says with a small smile. "If... my schedule goes back to... normal, I'll have... free time in the afternoon... every day."
Jason nods, attempting to give her shoulder a squeeze. It takes him a few moments, and he only gets a few fingers in on the shoulder squeeze but-... Success! "Sounds like a plan. You just get back to me as soon as you know your new schedule and we'll see when we can get together. I figure I've probably got another week before I'm in good enough shape to see combat, so we should have time."
Va'ynna tenses up as he squeezes her shoulder, but calms down when she realizes it's not getting crushed. "I'll talk with the new owners... when they... close for the night."
Alright. Shoot a message my way. I can't guarantee I'll get back to you right away, but I'll respond as soon as I can. Not the easiest thing to do, typing with these doodads.
Jason shrugs, "Sometimes the nurses help me out, but I think they're getting a little tired of me." he frowns.
Va'ynna looks like she's holding back laughter for a moment, but she manages to contain it. "I... noticed that," she says with a small smile. "What... did you do?"
Jason shrugs his shoulders, not bothering to move his arms along with the motion. "Nothing! Just asked 'em to do their jobs and cut me a little slack." He lowers his voice as he glances at the door, "I'm a broken man!" he says with an exaggerated tone, "So what if I turn my volume up a little too loud? Or... ask them to read my messages to me? Or type up responses for me? Or read me the
Va'ynna raises an eyebrow, but eventually nods. "Maybe they have... too long workdays," she says. "I... know that... can be frustrating."
Jason nods a few times, slowly retrieving his hand from the asari's shoulder and setting it beside him. "Maybe." he says with a sigh, "Or maybe they're all a bunch of grumpy assholes. They might just all be a bunch of grumpy assholes." he repeats with a nod.
Va'ynna frowns. "I... don't really know," she says. "I think... it's just that they're overworked. Halisi... seemed like that when I... saw her yesterday."
Jason sighs and nods, "You're probably right." He glances over at Va'ynna at the mention of Halisi, "You saw the Doc?" he asks, "How was she? She-... didn't particularly approve of-... of this." he says, glancing pointedly at his left arm.
Va'ynna nods. "She... mentioned something like that," she says. "She was... very upset." She doesn't elaborate any further than that.
Jason lowers his head, another pang of guilt shooting through him. "She'll be fine..." he mutters before glancing at Va'ynna, "I just-..." he begins before stopping and trailing off. "Like I said... Everything I do just seems to ripple outward and damage everyone around me..."
Va'ynna leans on him a little bit. "You... shouldn't... think like that," she attempts to comfort him. "You... do a lot of... good, Jason. Don't... forget that."
Jason 's lopsided smirk returns somewhat. "I try..." he admits with a sigh, "Just hard to see when everything keeps crashing around me." He leans his head against Va'ynna's and goes quiet for a few moments. "That'll all change when I get back." he says softly with a slight nod of his head, "Soon as Linda is safe and home again, I'm going to get the agency in order. Make sure everything is
Halisi knocks on the doorframe to Jason's room after standing there for a few seconds. She has a datapad in hand and a smile on her face. (Feya)
Va'ynna is started by the knock and sits up straight. "That... sounds great," she says with a smile, before looking for who it could be. "Hey."
Jason straightens up a bit as well as he glances over at Halisi. "Oh... Hey, Doc." he says, "We were just talking about you."
Halisi looks at Va'ynna, her smile wavering briefly. "Hey. Sorry about yesterday." She says to the asari before moving into the room. (Feya)
Halisi 's smile regains strength as she takes a seat in the chair, looking to Jason now. "I should apologize to you too. It was unprofessional to hand you off to a nurse." (Feya)
Jason furrows his brow and gives a shake of his head. "Wha-.. no! No need to apologize, Doc. Really. I've asked a lot out of you, and you've went above and beyond to deliver. Thank you."
Va'ynna fidgets with her hands as she listens to them talk. "Should... I not be around for this conversation?" she asks.
Halisi offers an appreciative nod. She glances at Va'ynna. "That's up to Jason. I'd like to talk to him about his recovery." (Feya)
Jason glances between Halisi and Va'ynna once before resting his eyes on the asari with a shrug of his shoulders. "That's up to you, V. You're more than welcome to stay."
Halisi nods and then starts to speak. "How are you feeling today? You seem to be doing better." (Feya)
Jason glances down at each arm before looking back up at Halisi. "There's still a bit of pain with movement." he says, "They don't feel all that responsive, either, but I can't tell if that's due to an issue with the hardware, or just because I'm just not used to it yet. But-..." he pauses, his eyes suddenly light up, "...I can do this!" His arm slowly raises out in front of him, moving
in a very linear way. Once it's extended out in front of him, everything stops moving aside from his wrist, which rotates until the clenched, prosthetic fist is aimed palm upwards. In three rigid, inhuman motions, his middle finger goes from clenched, to slightly bent, to fully extended upward. The most complicated of bird flippings he's ever done. Jason smiles proudly. "Road to recovery,
Va'ynna covers her mouth with a hand as she successfully holds back laughter, although looking at her would give her away..
Halisi covers her face with her palm. "I'm-... I'm glad, Jason. Clearly you're making progress." She grins briefly, but her expression soon returns to a neutral state. "Some feeling of delay is normal while you're still adjusting to the arms, but I'l have a look at the prosthetic monitoring if you want, make sure there's nothing wrong with them." (Feya)
Jason continues to beam with pride. "Yeah... Might be for the best, just to be sure." he says, his hand still awkwardly flipping the bird.
Halisi glances at Jason's hand, clearing her throat before returning her focus to his face as she speaks again. "We'll have you back in action in no time. And you'll be stronger than ever." Her gaze briefly flickers to the bed rails. (Feya)
Jason slowly follows her gaze and his smile fades away. The bed railing has a large chunk gouged out of it. "Was like that when I got here." he says quickly, turning his head to face Halisi once more with a nod, "This place could probably use new equipment. Might wanna check up on that. That could be dangerous."
Jason nods sheepishly and clears his throat. "So-... Uhh.... Yeah. When do you think you'll be releasing me?" he asks, attempting to change the subject.
Halisi shrugs faintly. "I won't keep you here much longer. Just want to be sure your body isn't going to reject any of the cybernetic anchors before we release you. Of course, you'll need to continue to exercise your arms after being released." (Feya)
Jason glances down at where the cybernetics are anchored to his chest. "How... Maybe that's why I'm having so much trouble?" he asks, a bit of panic setting into his voice, "What happens if they're rejected?"
Halisi takes on a reassuring smile. "It's not as bad as it sounds. We'd simply have to surpress your immune system temporarily and go in to make adjustments to the anchors." (Feya)
Jason visibly relaxes somewhat and gives a nod. "Alright..." he says. "So? Two days? Three?" he asks, hoping to get the hell out of this place as soon as possible, "Got a lot of preparations to finish up on, Doc. If you could fast-track this for me...."
Halisi ponders the question for a while and then responds with a sigh. "I could let you out tomorrow, if you feel you need to get to work on the preparations. But promise you'll report any trouble immediately, and do the needed exercises." (Feya)
Jason slowly extends his arm out to the side. When it's fully extended, the elbow begins to bend, putting his hand up at a 90 degree angle from his arm. Finally, he extends each finger, one by one, until just a flat, open palm faces Halisi. The entire ordeal takes around 20 seconds in which Jason remains quiet. Finally, when finished, he nods and speaks, as if he was unable to do so until
Va'ynna opens her mouth to say something, but decides against it as she did promise to not interrupt them.
Jason notices Va'ynna's reaction as he slowly lowers his arm back down. "I think V here was wanting me to let you know that she'd like to get a pair herself." he teases with a stern nod, "Maybe attached down near the ribs. In addition to her arms, though, not replacements." His lopsided smirk grows, "Might help her with all the drinks she makes down at the Respite."
Va'ynna nudges Jason, not finding it very funny. "I... I... just wanted to say I'll... check with him every day," she says.
Halisi smirks as Jason speaks and then looks to Va'ynna. "That sounds good. I'll feel better with someone keeping an eye on him." (Feya)
Jason frowns. "Hey! I do a damn good job at keeping an eye on myself!" he says defensively before glancing over at Va'ynna with a smirk, "But... for V's sake, I'll allow it."
Jason nods along. "Absolutely. They may act a little more professionally if you had some security around to keep an eye on things. Call 'em on their shit." he says before putting on his best salesman smile, "And it just so happens that I know a pretty great agency. Could probably get the hospital a fair price. It's run by quite a dashing fellow, if I do say so myself."
Halisi shakes her head with a grin. "Well, you seem to be doing fine..." She says, getting out of the chair. (Feya)
Jason frowns. "So... So we'll discuss prices later, yeah?" he asks as the doctor begins to stand up.
Halisi starts heading towards the door, but stops to answer Jason. "Yes. We'll take care of that after we've sorted this whole mess out." She nods with a faint smile. "Alright?" (Feya)
Jason nod in turn. "Absolutely." he says. His face scrunches up as he concentrates for a moment, bringing his arm around in front of him. In a slow, unnatural motion, he waves to Halisi. His face softens up slightly as he watches his hand.
Jason glances over at Va'ynna with a smirk once Halisi exits the room. "That went well." he says, "Looks like I'm going home tomorrow!"
Va'ynna tilts her head. "Are you sure... the staff here won't miss you too much to... let you leave?" she says with a grin.
Jason snorts loudly. "They'll probably throw a party." he says with a roll of his eyes, "Won't need to do their damn jobs anymore. Just-... stand around talking."
Jason shrugs non-committally. "Suppose... Maybe..." he admits, "It's possible." He glances over at the asari, "So... The kitchen will be reopening now, right...?" he fishes, sounding as though there's something he wants to ask.
Va'ynna nods. "Yes, starting with... breakfast tomorrow," she says. "Most of my... work today was in... preparation for that."
Jason perks up slightly. "Soooo.... Since I'm being released tomorrow-...." he tilts his head to the side, "...What are the odds that an order of varren kebabs will be waiting for me when I get back...?" His smirk widens a bit and he wiggles his eyebrows.
Va'ynna looks thoughtful for a moment. "We... don't start with dinner menu items until... very late in the afternoon," she says, "but... I... I'll see what I can do if you... tell me when you... get out as... soon as you know."
Jason 's smile widens even more. "Awesome! Can do!" His arms both slowly rise and he glances back and forth between them, clearly focusing on what he's doing. After a moment, he grips Va'ynna in a hug. A very loose hug, but a hug. "You're the best, V."
Va'ynna doesn't tense up as much this time and returns the hug, blushing a bit. "I... thank you," she says.
Jason frowns a bit as he tugs his head back, "Why are you thanking me?" he asks, puzzled, "No, no, no. Thank you, V." He retracts his arms and sets them back at his side. "Really. Thank you." he repeats, his smile returning.
Jason gives a chuckle, his chest rising and falling as he does. He winces slightly as a pain shoots through his chest. Once it's under control, he gives a nod towards the door. "You should get home and get a little rest for once. Can't waste your first real amount of time off work sitting at the hospital with my gimpass." he says.
Va'ynna nods. "I... suppose I should get back before... Victoria starts looking for me," she says, standing up. "It... was good to see you, Jason."
Jason gives a nod. "You too, V." he says, sitting back a bit further on his bed, "Tell Vicky I said hi."
Va'ynna nods again. "I'll do that," she says, making her way towards the door out, glancing at Jason once before leaving.
Jason takes the effort to slowly raise his arm and give a small wave, which ends with his arm merely holding its position, bent outward at a 90 degree angle.
Jason holds his smile until Va'ynna has been gone for a few seconds before letting out a loud sigh and slumping back into his seat on the bed. He holds both of his arms out in front of them, wincing from the slight pangs of pain shooting through his body with each movement, and clenches each fist shut. Slowly. One finger at a time. He stares distantly at the arms for a number of minutes.
