#Miner'sRespite – November 8, 2015
Va'ynna is sitting in a booth near the bar, and empty plate and a half-empty glass of water on the table before her. It's around noon. She's wearing a dark-green dress.
Adam has also been sat in the Respite for a good twenty minutes. An empty cup sits before him, the pungent aroma of coffee lingering. Dressed in a simple shirt and jeans combo, he has remained silent. An unlit cigarette dangles between his lips as he flips the page of the leather bound book in his hands, his eyes slowly tracing each sentence with great interest.
Va'ynna takes a long sip of her glass and sits back in her seat. She hasn't paid much attention to people coming and going while having her lunch break.
Adam glances up from his reading, casting a look at Va'ynna for a moment. He slips a marker onto his page and closes the book, placing it down gently upon the table. "Enjoying your lunch, Va'ynna?" He asks softly, not being seated far from her.
Va'ynna looks up at the person speaking to her with a raised brow. It takes a moment for her to realize who it is. "I... Yes, I am," she says. "How... about you?"
Adam nods once, folding his hands atop the table. "I am, thank you," he says. "It's nice just to take a moment for yourself every once in awhile." He gestures idly at the book to emphasise his point. "Has it been a busy day?" He asks.
Va'ynna nods. "Mhm," she says. "Mornings are usually... the most busy time with preparations for the day, inventory... and all that."
Va'ynna shrugs. "Not really," she says, "I just work in the kitchen, without... having to think about anything else. I work every day, though."
Va'ynna frowns. "I've... gotten used to it," she says. "I think it's been a year now since I... started working here."
And you've never considered searching for another job? Then again, I suppose finding work other than mercenary contracts is significantly harder.
Va'ynna shakes her head. "I havent," she says, "and I... don't think that would be better." She sighs. "Anyway, enough... about me," Va'ynna continues. "How is your work going?"
Adam nods. "Fair enough," he says. He unfolds his hands and leans back into his seat, a defeated look crossing his face. "Not well," he admits. "I spent the past week searching for anything regarding Damien's disappearance. Nothing." He chuckles without humour. "He really doesn't want to be found."
I spoke with a few members - Jason and Leah - and Doctor Halisi. I gained some information, but not enough for anything solid. So I've decided to remain on Aite for the time being, in case he decides to come back.
Adam takes the cigarette from between his lips and tucks it into his shirt pocket. "I have an income," he says. "So I'll just be taking odd jobs on the side. Though I'll ask Redrock if they'll need someone to fill Damien's position until he comes back. If he does, that is."
Va'ynna nods. "A lot of them... are still recovering from the last job, I think," she says, "so I'm sure they could use... more people."
Adam hums and nods. "Very well, I'll talk to Mr. Wolfe soon," he says. "What are they like as a company? They are certainly small for a PMC."
Va'ynna hums thoughtfully. "I'm not really one to ask," she says. "I have... a few friends who work there, but that's... about it." She picks up her glass and drinks the rest of her water.
It depends who you ask. They have... had some difficulties recently, but I don't... know much about that line of work. Jason doesn't seem very... pessimistic about it, though.
Adam smiles faintly. "I take it he's more of an optimist?" he asks. "Always looking on the bright side?"
Va'ynna nods. "I'd say so," she says. "They have just rebuilt their office, so... they must have things mostly under control."
Adam quirks an eyebrow. "They must've done something major to warrant the destruction of their offices," he says. "I'll see if I can't speak to him this afternoon."
Adam snorts slightly. "Surprisingly, attacking a PMC headquarters isn't a common occurrence," he says. "I mean it's always a possibility and since Redrock are a incredibly small PMC it would be easier to strike them where they live." He leans back in his chair, furrowing his brow thoughtfully.
But between larger PMCs? Usually direct attacks against one another involve greater amounts of espionage and paperwork. Declaring war against rival PMCs would be costly both in manpower and resources.
Va'ynna nods. "I... see," she says. "I don't understand why... anyone really wants to risk everything in that line of work, but I'm... grateful for everything they've done for the Miner's Respite."
Va'ynna hums. "Not... exactly," she says. "Jason was one of the... first people I met when I got here around a year ago, and... it wasn't until a few months later that D'Inea hired them for security here."
Va'ynna glances at the bar, which Kanaya is currently tending to. "Yeah," she says. "She disappeared twenty days ago, though, but... her daughter showed up a few days afterward to step in for her."
Adam looks towards the bar, humming. "Is anyone looking for her?" He asks, turning his gaze back to Va'ynna.
Va'ynna frowns. "What little we've heard suggests she is doing fine, but... she hasn't contacted anyone working here directly."
Adam folds his arms, nodding faintly. "I'm sure she's capable. Owning an inn out in the Terminus... You'd have to be I say." He chuckles quietly.
Va'ynna nods. "She wasn't afraid when she told... a krogan to behave, so... I guess you're right," she says. "But... not hearing anything from her still makes me worry."
Adam raises his brow in surprise. "Telling a krogan to behave? And he listened? She has my respect." He tilts his head slightly, a small understanding smile gracing his features. "I know what that's like. But I'm sure she'll get in contact soon."
Va'ynna frowns. "I... hope so too," she says. "And the same... for Damien." She looks thoughtful for a moment. "I... I can ask Kanaya to give you the security footage from when he was last seen here."
Va'ynna returns the smile. "I... I'll see what I can do," she says. "I can't promise anything, though."
Adam holds a hand up with a slight shake of his head. "I understand," he says. "Security and what not. But thank you regardless."
Va'ynna nods and stands up. "It was good... talking with you," she says. "I... will get back to you tonight or tomorrow... about the security footage if I get it."
Adam smiles politely and bows his head respectively. "Thank you again, Va'ynna. I believe my contact details are on your system."
Va'ynna nods, again. "You're welcome," she says. She picks up the plate and empty glass and makes her way upstairs after stopping by the bar with said plate and glass.
