#Halisi'sApartment – August 9, 2018
Ilyna is asleep when Vasquez calls. The omni-tool is in the bathroom where it was left after she tried to call Ehanis. It's possible for Halisi to answer it without authenticating, however. Ilyna has, true to her promise, taken up the middle of the bed (facing Li) affording enough room for Halisi.
Halisi is asleep as well. She appears to have fallen asleep while waiting for an update from Vasquez, judging by the fact that she's half-sitting in the bed next to Ilyna, fully dressed and with her omni-tool active. The consequences of being overworked, no doubt. She doesn't stir as Ilyna's omni-tool starts to chime, at least not right away.
Ilyna is eventually woken up by the noise of the omni-tool. Having gotten used to Halisi's stubbornness, she does try to get out of the bed in that direction, but stops when her arm meets Halisi's upper arm. Ilyna is moving slowly and carefully to avoid waking Li. She turns around and awkwardly climbing out the front of it. The call times out before she's out of the bedroom and she lets out a soft sigh. She
Halisi soon enough starts to stir from the noise, and by the time Ilyna has left the bed she's awake, blinking a couple of times and squinting as she gets her bearings. A quiet, exhausted sigh sounds as she sits up properly, looking to Ilyna. "Sorry..." she mumbles. She had wanted to ensure Ilyna got to sleep by taking any calls herself. So much for that.
Li turns in her sleep, uneasy mumbles escaping her, but she doesn't wake, thankfully. Her hands grasp for Ilyna, the mumbles intensifying when she doesn't find her, but they soon enough find Halisi's arm, and she seems to settle after grabbing hold of it, prompting a tired smile from the doctor.
Ilyna gives a faint smile. "I'll take it," she whispers, likely too low for Halisi to hear her. There is a look of guilt on her as Li stirs, but it fades when she calms down again. She takes a quiet, deep breath and exits the bedroom, gently closing the door behind her. Her eyelids are still heavy, so it must not have been long since she fell asleep, but she does remember where she left her omni-tool. The
thought that it could be Ehanis reaching out to her does give her a slight second wind. Ilyna enters the bathroom and walks over to her omni-tool. She would by lying if she wasn't a little disappointed when it turns out it isn't Ehanis. It's only now that she thinks of Mian, and a frown crosses her lips. She sighs, and taps on the omni-tool to call back.
Halisi goes to protest, but as Ilyna exits into the bathroom she settles back into the bed, not wishing to disturb Li.
Ilyna takes a few seconds to respond. "Sorry, I didn't wake up soon enough," she says, the exhaustion clear in her voice, though it's not helped by her keeping it low to not disturb Halisi and Li. "Did you speak with Mian?"
Vasquez: "Yes. Not without difficulty. She didn't come willingly. We have her in holding at the base for now. She's a piece of work. Seems to think attacking you was completely justified."
Ilyna | "I'm not surprised after earlier today, but... I would be if I hadn't," Ilyna says. "I lived with her and Ehanis for a while.... She was an unpleasant person to be around, but not this bad." She lets out a sigh before asking, "Has she said anything about Ehanis?"
Vasquez: "Not much that's useful. She claims Ehanis left without telling her anything. Even says Ehanis knocked her out. I've sent someone back to the apartment to try and verify her stor. Should be hearing from them soon. I... don't get the feeling she's involved in Ehanis' disappearance though. Just an aggressively unpleasant nutjob if I was gonna guess."
Ilyna closes her eyes for a moment in frustration. "Goddess," she mutters. "I... don't...." She pauses. "I know Ehanis is... bad at talking about what really bothers her," she says, "but... I'm having trouble believing Mian wouldn't have suspected something."
Vasquez: "She did mention thinking something was off about Ehanis' behavior. Not really anything that could help us though. You can have a word with her yourself tomorrow, if you want. She's not going anywhere, that's for damn sure. Hopefully we'll find something that'll point us in the right direction in the apartment."
Ilyna doesn't look in the slightest bit eager to see Mian, but at least Vasquez cannot see that. If only Mian wasn't the only lead to finding her sister. "Ehanis wasn't like herself on the ship either, but... that could be said about everyone," she says, and lets out another sigh. "Yeah, I'll talk with her in the morning."
Vasquez: "...alright. I'll message you if we turn up anything significant from the apartment. If not, we'll speak tomorrow."
Ilyna | "I'll keep my omni-tool closer this time," she says. She doesn't want to disturb Li and Halisi's sleep any more than she has already, but what she wants even less is to not be able to help Ehanis if they find a lead. Not to mention Vasquez who's leading this operation. "I'm sorry," she says. "I should have been the one kept awake by this."
Ilyna sighs, still feeling guilty about it. "Thank you," she says. "I promise I'll return to work soon." Ilyna then closes the call, taps a few times on her omni-tool to change to a silent notification, and turns off the hologram. She carries it with her back to the bedroom, trying to be as quiet as she can. Despite her fatigue, her mind is anything but quiet, so she looks distant and worried now that there
is not a conversation to focus on. The thoughts are jumbled, and unhelpful in preparing her for tomorrow's interrogation.
Halisi is studying the sleeping Li with a thoughtful, if weary, expression. Her attention quickly turns to Ilyna once she emerges from the bathroom. "Any news...?" she asks quietly.
Ilyna looks over at Halisi as she snaps her out of her thoughts, though it takes a few seconds for her to speak. "They have... detained Mian, but... she hasn't said anything useful," she says, barely above a whisper. "I'll... talk with her in the morning." Ilyna closes the bedroom door, and sits down on the bed next to Halisi, but she looks straight ahead. "She did say Ehanis behaved oddly, though," Ilyna
Halisi lets out a faint sigh, studying Ilyna for a moment before reaching out with her free hand, resting it gently on her forearm. "We'll figure it out." she says softly, running her thumb across her skin.
Ilyna shifts closer when she feels her touch on her arm, but her eyes turns to the omni-tool in her hand. "I hope so," Ilyna says wearily, and the guilt return in her expression. "We have a lot to figure out..."
Halisi lets out a quiet noise, somewhere halfway between a subdued laugh and a sigh. Her gaze lingers on Ilyna as the asari looks to the omni-tool, studying her in silence for a moment before offering a small smile. "We will. Right now I'm... just glad you and Li are safe."
Ilyna gives a brief smile, and looks up at Halisi. "I...-," she begins but fails to find the words to say. "Sorry, I shouldn't keep you awake, Halisi, you...", stifled yawn, "need... it more than any of us." Ilyna whispers and carefully gets under the blanket (and Li's arm) to reclaim her previous place in the middle of the bed.
Halisi shakes her head dismissively, her smile returning briefly. She shuffles out of the way to let Ilyna reclaim her spot, and after a moment's thought she heads off to the bathroom to get ready for sleep herself.
Ilyna slips the omni-tool under her pillow and lays down on it with a soft sigh. She turns towards Li and studies her briefly to see if their conversation has disturbed her sleep.
Li is quick to latch onto Ilyna after she swaps back in for Halisi, resting against her arm. She remains asleep, looking quite peaceful for once.
Halisi re-emerges from the bathroom soon enough. She's changed into the oversized t-shirt-turned-nightgown that she's started using since Ilyna and Li started staying in the apartment. It's not hard to see that her makeup was obfuscating how tired she really looks. She looks over toward the bed upon emerging, and she hesitates for a brief moment before making her way over to the free side. She doesn't say anything, just slipping in
Ilyna studies Li carefully as she snuggles closer, giving a small smile when she realizes she's still asleep. Ilyna closes her eyes, but her racing mind keeps her awake for another few minutes. When Halisi enters, she lifts her head briefly to look at her, but she doesn't move any more than that. She does not notice how tired Halisi looks, but it wouldn't have surprised her in the slightest. "Enough space?"
Halisi gains a brief, amused smirk at the question. "Yes." she assures, wedging her right hand under her own pillow, and leaving her left to rest near Ilyna's arm, without touching her. Theirs is a strange situation, fraught with uncertainties, and it's getting harder and harder to know where the boundries are.
Ilyna gives a faint affirmative sound, but doesn't say anything in response. She closes her eyes and tries to fall asleep again despite her noisy mind. She does not react to Halisi's left hand, but she may not have noticed it.
