#Miner'sRespite – June 19, 2016
Va'ynna is standing at the bar, stepping in for Aylena for what's supposed to be a brief moment. She's wearing a simple red t-shirt and black pants, and not a dress like when she worked at the bar full time.
Heavy flakes of wet snow are falling slowly from gray skies outside, quickly adding onto the half-melted buildup from the day before.
Nathan is leant outside on his cycle, finishing off the lingering embers smouldering at the end of his cigarette. The snow bothers him little, warmly clad in a leather jacket with a woollen interior. A white shirt with the top two buttons undone, dark blue jeans and a pair of polished smart shoes is his current attire. He gazes up as the flakes flutter down and he
lays a palm upward, catching a few in his calloused hand. He grins slightly as they melt in his hand, brushing the water off on his arm.
Leah nears the Respite with Tara in tow. Dressed in a pair of form fitting black pants, clunky unlaced black boots and a heavy, light blue winter jacket. As she spots Nathan, she pulls down her hood, freeing her neat ponytail, and begins wiping at the snow on her shoulders. "Hey!" she offers, announcing her arrival to Nathan as she continues towards the front door. She stands in
place near the entrance, stomping back and forth from foot to foot to clear her boots of snow as she waits for Nathan. "If snow felt as nice as it looks, I'd be a whole lot less cold right now." she mutters to Tara.
Tara is following closely after Leah. She's wearing very similar clothes, likely borrowed, except for a large, ill-fitting winter coat and a colorful tuque. She's looking up at the snow, a faint, rare smile on her face as she feels the flake hit her scar-covered skin. As Leah calls out her attention turns down until she spots Nathan, studying him in silence for a moment before lowering her gaze to the ground and continuing to
Nathan raises his arm in a wave, offering one for the pair of them. He stubs out the cigarette in a small tin, placing it back in his bike's storage. He pops a piece of chewing gum in his mouth and walks over to the pair,a warm smile on his face. "Hey you two," he greets cheerfully. "Let's get inside. As nice as snow is, it's not very comfortable when it's melting
Leah gives a short nod. "Not exactly the shortest of walks to get here." she says, "I think I've already had my fill of snow for the winter." She steps inside, the warmth of the Respite causing her to let out a satisfied sigh as she works to remove her jacket. She stomps her boots a few more times as she throws her jacket over her shoulder. "Figured this might be a good place for
Tara to ask about a job." she informs Nathan as she adjusts her white, short sleeved top. "Hope you weren't waiting long."
Tara briefly glances around the Respite after entering, before standing aside and returning her gaze to the floor.
Nathan follows in after, closing the door and brushing off the flakes off snow. "Good idea," he says with a nod to Tara. "Sure you'd fit in here," he reassures her. He then looks to Leah and shrugs his shoulders in a dismissive fashion. "Just long enough for a cigarette. What do you guys want to drink?" He asks as he pulls off his jacket.
Leah offers a smile to Tara as Nathan speaks to her. "I don't know." she says as Nathan addresses the pair, "Maybe-... Just a soda." she decides with a nod. She starts up towards the bar, giving a glance over at Tara, "How about you? Want a soda?" She gives a glance towards the window that was destroyed the previous day.
Tara defers to Leah as Nathan asks what they want, and when she asks she nods faintly, remaining in place.
Va'ynna is not serving anyone at the moment, and she's watching the new arrivals from where she stands behind the bar.
Nathan approaches the bar, smiling to Va'ynna. "Hey there," he says."Ummm, three soda's please." He then looks to the area Leah glanced at, a light frown creasing his features. "Heard it got... Messy," he mumbles to her.
The window still has some cracks in it, but curtains in front of it are drawn shut, which makes it less obvious.
Va'ynna follows his glance and frowns, but mentions nothing of it. "What kind of soft drinks would you like?"
Leah gives a slight nod as she takes a seat beside Nathan. She glances back at Tara and furrows her brow, waving the woman over. "Yeah, it-... wasn't pretty." she frowns. "Colas." she says to Va'ynna, "For me and Tara, anyway." She reaches into her pocket, fishing around for her credit chit for a moment before sliding it across the counter. Her attention moves back to the window and
she gives a shrug, "But we managed to get control of it. Phil took a bit of a hit, but he's going to be fine. I'll be taking over his shift here, though."
Nathan nods lightly. "Three colas." He takes out a credit chit and slides it across, sliding Leah's back to her. "I said I'll buy the drinks. Don't worry about it." He smiles for a moment. "But, uh, who's Phil? I take it he's Redrock too?"
Tara follows Leah to the bar, taking a seat next to her after a moment's hesitation. She listens in silence to the conversation with Nathan, although her gaze moves briefly to the window.
Leah frowns and pushes her credit chit forward again. "I can buy my own drinks!" she assures him. "Oh, uh, yeah. Phil has been around a while. Seems nice. Seems-..." her frown deepens and it's clear she doesn't feel particularly comfortable talking about him when he's not around, "...Well it seems like he would probably be better suited to another job." She perks up slightly, giving
a big shrug, her shoulders rising and falling, "But you never know, right? People can surprise you!"
Va'ynna nods, and makes a beeline for the bottle, which she still remember exactly where to find. When she returns, she starts pouring three pint-glasses and placing them in front of the group. She averts her gase while delivering Tara's, however.
Nathan narrows his eyes faintly as she pushes it back, but then shrugs a shoulder with a small smile. "Alright," he says. He then quirks his eyebrow at her description and view of Phil. He chuckles softly as she concludes. "A fair point. I'll go meet the guy at some point, get to know him. Always good to know your colleagues, right?" He then leans back a little bit
to look at Tara, flashing his most disarming smile he can muster. "So how you doing, Tara?" He asks idly.
Leah grips her glass and pulls it towards herself. "Thanks." she says, offering Va'ynna a smile. She gives a glance over to Tara as Nathan addresses her but returns her attention to Va'ynna. "So how was everything after we left last night? No more trouble?" she asks.
Tara blinks, a little startled at being addressed directly. She looks to Nathan and tilts her head respectfully, but seems uncertain what to say. She looks to Leah for guidance but is left hesitating further upon noticing that she is busy.
Va'ynna glances down at the two offered credit chits, not taking either of them yet. "I... don't think so," she says. "I left as soon as it was over. Uvena didn't... even let me get my jacket, but...," she winces as the image of the dead body goes through her mind, "I understand why."
Nathan nods to Va'ynna, taking a lengthy sip of his drink. He looks back to Tara and simply smiles lightly. "You like living with Leah?" He asks, reasoning that giving a specific topic may help her out a little.
Leah scrunches up her nose, nodding slightly. "Yeah it was-...." she sighs, propping her smile back up, "...at least nobody here got hurt, right? It could've went south real quick. I think we lucked out."
Tara is quick to offer a nod as her only response, before falling back into silence. She's looking rather ridiculous in the oversized coat which she is still wearing.
Va'ynna considers it for a moment. "I... I'm not sure," she says. "D'Inea got hit," she taps the tip of her right middle crest while glancing to the side,"here, and... Uvena told me Philip suffered a concussion."
Nathan nods at Tara's response. "Good. Yeah, she seems alright, I supppppose," he says with a quick glance at Leah and a smirk. He then looks back to Tara. "So you think you'd like to work here?"
Leah 's frown returns momentarily. "Well, seriously hurt." she corrects, taking a quick sip of her drink. Deciding it's probably best not to talk about the subject any longer, she reaches out and pushes the other glass closer to Tara, giving the woman a nod. She rolls her eyes at Nathan's comment, but capitalizes on his current line of questioning, assuming it's a good time to drop
the bomb on Va'ynna. "This is Tara." she introduces the woman with a sweeping gesture, gaze returning to Va'ynna. "She's a good friend of mine. She'll be staying with me for a while. Sooooo~ I noticed Aylena doesn't seem to have a whole lot of help these days and figured, what the heck? Tara could use a reason to get out of the house and meet some people around town, right Tara?" she
asks, enthusiastically glancing over at Tara, "She's good people! I can vouch for her. And I think she has a lot of skills that would be perfect for the Respite. Cooking~ Cleaning~..." she begins listing off, "...She's a good listener! Sometimes, I talk to her for hours and she just listens, and listens, and listens, and she never gets angry. And the other day-...." she winces, clearing
her throat as she realizes she's beginning to ramble. "Am I'm rambling? I'm rambling. I'll stop rambling. Nobody likes a rambler. Sooooo~ yeah! Tara needs a job." She finishes up with a big bright smile, her large green eyes locked on Va'ynna.
Nathan glances at Leah, quirking an eyebrow at her lengthy ramble. When she concludes, he stares at her blankly for a second before chuckling quietly, giving Tara a humoured look. "I can believe that," he says, indicating Leah with a thumb.
Tara seems uncertain of her answer, but thankfully Leah's rapid-fire ramble distracts. She turns back towards the bar and tilts her head in greeting to Va'ynna. She has not touched her soda yet.
Va'ynna tilts her head while Leah rambles on, but she lights up at the mention of cooking. "That's... not up to me, but... I'll forward it to Aylena," she says. "I would be very glad if she hired more staff for the kitchen. Some nights can be... too hectic."
Leah 's bright smile persists. "Great!" she says, glancing over at Tara and giving a big nod before looking back to Va'ynna. "She cooks really well! Have Aylena give me a call or something and we can figure something out. I figure since I'll be taking over the security shift here, it's the perfect time for her to get settled in!" Finding little difficulty in managing multiple
conversations at once, she glances to Nathan and cocks her head to the side. "I heard that and I have no idea what you meant by it. Are you trying to say I talk a lot? Because I don't. I talk juuuuust enough." she says, barely a gap between her statements to Va'ynna and Nathan, as if it was just one continuous thought.
Va'ynna looks as though she's barely holding back laughter for a moment. "I will," she nods. "Does she have your... contact information?"
Nathan holds a hand up defensively. "Not guilty, your honour!" He says at her question and with a small playful wink. He resumes drinking his coke as Va'ynna asks her question, content with just the relaxed air.
Tara studies the cola for a moment before taking a sip, flinching slightly as she's unaccustomed to the carbon dioxide.
Leah scrunches up her nose and stares Nathan down for a moment, but her smirk quickly returns and she gives Va'ynna a shrug. "Actually? I have no idea. I figured the agency probably sent them over considering I'll be working here. I can send my info to you, though, just in case." she says, hand already shoved into her jacket (Which is now draped over the stool) pocket. After a few
moments, and a bit of shifting around, she manages to get her omni-tool out. A few pokes, presses and swipes later and the information would be made available for Va'ynna. "Annnnnd we're all set." she says. "So. Riding around Freedom Falls in the snow on a motorcycle." she says with a nod, still staring at her omni-tool interface, "I can see you take safety very seriously."
Va'ynna enable her own in turn and saves the contact information. "Thank you," she says, before looking at Nathan. "Isn't it too... cold outside to drive a vehicle like that?"
Nathan shrugs, looking straight ahead as he begins to answer. "Yep. Leather jacket and jeans, best protection for a biker," he says. He sips at his drink some more then glances across to her. "I even ride without a helmet, when I'm feeling especially safe." He then smiles faintly, looking back towards the drinks rack on the other side of the bar. "Honestly, it was
just a lapse of judgement today and perhaps a but too much confidence in the all-terrain function." He then looks to Va'ynna, nodding. "In this clothing, yeah. My cycle armour has heat management though, so it usually isn't a problem."
Tara quickly seems to be taking a liking to the soda, sipping it again as she listens to the conversation.
Leah shakes her head, giving a short chuckle. "Good way to keep yourself on the 'disabled list'." she says, giving a nod to his arm as she deactivates her omni-tool and stores it back in her jacket pocket.
Va'ynna frowns, but she doesn't give any more of an answer than that. An asari further down the bar waves at her, and she walks off to serve her order.
Nathan hums a laugh. "Yeah, yeah. Don't tell Halisi, though. I barely know the woman, but she terrifies me. Hell hath no fury like a doctor ignored." He nods sagely. He noted Va'ynna's look and deflates a little, glancing down to his drink.
Leah gives a snicker. "I'll just bank it for some healthy blackmail somewhere down the road." she teases. She takes a sip of her drink and glances over to the credit chits with a confused look on her face. Figuring Va'ynna is probably just waiting until they finish to charge them, she reaches out and slides her chit back towards herself. "It's nice being back." she says with a sigh,
Tara continues much the same, drinking the cola in silence, although she starts to glance around curiously.
Nathan narrows his eyes at Leah, a slight pout to his lips. "So cruel. So, so cruel." He then smirks and nods, waving a hand idly as he speaks. "I do know. It's a good feeling to be doing something you know you're good at. To be in your element, right?" He chuckles, sipping his drink.
Leah gives a nod of her own. "Exactly. I mean, I never really stopped working. I mostly meant it's nice to be back working for Redrock." she says with a chuckle, "But yeah... Sure. What about you?" she asks, "What are you doing to stay busy?"
Nathan places the glass down then uses that hand to prop up his head on the counter. "Well, I'm near enough to finishing maintenance on the weapons in our armoury. After that?" He blows a raspberry with his lips and gives an over exaggerated shrug. "Fuck knows. And it's not like I can just take the bike for a run either anymore after today if it keeps snowing like
Va'ynna returns to stand near the familiar-ish group after she's done serving the other patron, but she doesn't say anything to announce her presense.
Leah takes another sip of her cola as Nathan speaks. "And it will keep snowing like this. It's only just getting started, Nate." she assurs him. She seems to think of something, a big smile spreading to her cheeks. "Heeey~" she sings, "You could be the first one-armed Freedom Falls violinist!" She tilts her head to the side and pantomimes playing a violin nestled into the crook
of her neck with one hand, splashing a little bit of her soda onto the counter in the proccess. "Diddleiddleiddle!"
Tara looks briefly at Va'ynna as she rejoins them, but is soon distracted by Leah's antics, sipping her soda as she watches, eyebrows furrowing slightly in confusion.
Va'ynna brings up a hand to cover her mouth as a giggle escapes her. "How... bad does it get?" she asks.
Nathan groans and places his head on the counter with an audible thud, speaking into the counter. "I'm starting to regret that slip..." He mumbles. Though, he does seem to be trying his best to suppress a smirk at her antics. He raises his head slightly and adopts an aloof tone, turning his nose up at Leah. "Well, I'll simply take your mocking as a sign of
jealously for my ability to be able to play an artful instrument while your talent is merely brutish flailing of your fists!" He drawls, his translator attempting to place an accent.
Leah snickers and lowers her invisible violin. "I take offense to your implication that these aren't artful instruments!" she says, setting her soda down and holding her hands out in front of her as she looks them over. Her eyes peer past her hands to the asari on the other side of the bar and she places her palms back down against the counter. "Depends. We had some really heavy
Nathan chuckles mirthfully and gives Leah's hands an appraising look before picking up his glass and draining the last dregs of his drink. He glances across to the asari, listening quietly.
Va'ynna nods. "Yes," she says. "I have... usually avoided places that get much snow when I had the choice."
Leah glances over to Tara, giving her a confused look as she scans her. "Aren't you warm? Might wanna take off your jacket." she advises with a smirk before turning back to Va'ynna. "Well, let's just hope for a light one, then. Otherwise, get used to clearing the snow." She scrunches up her nose and frowns as she realizes she hasn't thought about it yet and how much more difficult
Nathan notices her look. He takes a few moments to figure her line of reasoning before speaking. "Hope you got snowshoes~" he sings to her tauntingly, though with a mirthful undertone.
Tara nods, quickly starting to take the jacket off after Leah suggests it - it seems she was just waiting for confirmation that she should. She seems relieved to be out of the uncomfortably warm coat, and puts it in her lap, neatly folded, before sipping her cola again.
Va'ynna hums thoughtfully. "I am not prepared for a cold... snowy winter," she says. "I don't think I have to... clear any snow, though. I live in a second floor apartment."
Leah kicks at Nathan's stool lightly. "I hope you don't wipe out on that bike of yours on the way home and snap your neck." she says sarcastically before looking back to the asari. She narrows her eyes on Va'ynna playfully. "Lucky!" she says with a playful pout, "Sometimes it sucks living out in the middle of nowhere."
Nathan snickers and pushes his empty glass over to Va'ynna, inclining his head towards it and mouthing, "Another please," so as not to disrupt their conversation too much.
Va'ynna makes an exaggerated frown. "Don't say that," she says. "Aylena might... hear it and ruin my luck." She takes the glass, and asks, "You want it filled up, right?" Mouthing and translators don't go well together.
Nathan blushes faintly at his blunder and nods dumbly. At the voice, he looks around before pinning the voice the Tara. He smiles at her kindly. "You ever made a snowman? Snow angel?"
Leah glances over to Tara as she actually speaks for once! "I'll show you how to pack the perfect snowball when we leave! See if you can nail Nate right in that hollow spot between his ears!" she says, poking herself in the forehead right between the eyes.
Nathan looks at Leah and makes to flick her on the arm. "Such a violent woman!" He smirks and looks to Tara, having noted her confusion. "You, uh, don't know what they are, do you?" He looks back to Leah. "There, we have something to show her!"
Va'ynna nods and moves off to find another bottle. She pours it and puts it on the counter without a word as she does not want to interrupt their conversation.
Leah cocks an eyebrow at Nathan. "You're just anti-fun! I'm not violent! Call me violent again and be prepared to catch a beating!" she threatens playfully, balling up her fist and raising it in front of her. After a moment she sticks out her tongue and rotates atop her stool to face Tara. "Me and my dad used to make snowmen every winter. It's fun!"
Nathan pulls a series of very mature and serious facial expressions behind her back, completely excluding a tongue poking out at her. He looks to his right as Va'ynna places his drink on the counter. He nods his thanks and takes a lengthy swig from it.
Tara 's frown remains, seeming a little off-put by the idea. It seems likely she doesn't quite understand.
Leah frowns in turn, realizing Tara must not understand if she's upset by the idea of making a snowman! "It's-... gah.... You-... Snowpeople..." She claps her hands together in many different ways, pantomiming the act of packing snow together, "...And you-... you make them with-... with snow..." she trails off, scrunching up her nose as she fails to figure out how to best explain it
and glances over her shoulder at Nathan. "Explain snowmen! I don't think she knows what that is! Nobody should be without the knowledge of snowmen!" She turns her attention back to Tara and smiles.
Nathan looks slightly out off being put on the spot, despite the fact he was the one to even introduce the prospect of making a snowman. "Well they are, um... Balls of snow... Of various sizes that vaguely resemble... A man. A carrot for a nose, stones for eyes and a mouth and twigs for arms." He does various hand gestures for each description to try and the point.
It's hardly a better performance than Leah. He does nod firmly though, confident that his description was perfectly apt and descriptive.
Va'ynna tilts her head. "I think I've seen sculptures like that somewhere," she says. "It was probably in a vid... or something like that."
Tara nods slightly at the descriptions, eyebrows still furrowed as she tries to imagine what they're describing with little success. It doesn't help that parts of their explanations were mangled by the translator.
Leah nods along as Nathan tries to describe it. Once he finishes and Va'ynna chimes in, Leah adds in enthusiastically, "It's fun! Trust me!"
Nathan glances towards the door. "Well, since it is meant to continue like this for the foreseeable future, how about we show you how it's done?"
