#Salvaging – August 6, 2013
Renala nods and climbs aboard the vehicle. "Don't just stand there, kid," she says to the young human before she carries the crates one by one towards the edge of the vehicle's cargo bay, so that they can be moved by herself – and the others – without climbing into the truck. While not physically strong, a very basic mass-lowering field alleviated her arms and back of much of the weight.
Fera'Sel moves towards the crates and hesitates for a few moments before deciding to carry one of the empty crates back.
Renala places another crate at the edge before jumping off the truck. When down, she picks up another crate and begins carrying it over, a mass-lowering field around it.
Fera'Sel slowly moves to the other truck with the empty crate and roughly places it down. She sighs and moves to the side of the truck they came in on, deciding that she wasn't particularly useful for this.
Steve hops into the back of the truck and sets up another crate to be carried over. After placing the datapad on top of it, he hops back into the snow and unloads the crate, carrying it and the datapad back to their vehicle.
Renala arrives at the truck they came in, being quite a bit slower than the human and turian. She places the crate behind the truck and immediately heads back towards the abandoned truck.
Steve sighs and rubs at the back of his neck, "The other truck has more than a weeks head start on us. We would probably have more luck searching for the bodies of those who took off on foot. I can't imagine they got very far without food or equipment."
Renala nods in agreement after Steve speak, again letting her omni-tool's interface dissipate. "Judging by that entry on the data-pad," she adds, "I'm not sure if they even want to be found. They did abandon the others, after all."
Old turian: We should bring them to justice, but searching for survivors is more important. Nods at Steve.
Tyranniac| The driver comes over to the group from outside. "So, what's the word? We got any more business out here?"
Fera'Sel moves back into the truck. "We should search for the equipment over survivors. It is our job, after all."
Renala turns towards the driver. "I actually wanted to ask you something," she says to her. "Do you know of any settlements nearby?"
Tyranniac| The driver thinks for a moment before responding. "Nothing aside from the mining camp that I know of. But new places pop up from time to time."
And that was hours away... In a vehicle equipped to handle the terrain. Not to mention, if they made it back to the camp, they would have reported in by now. The fact that nobody has heard from them in more than a week means they most likely didn't make it out of these mountains.
Renala nods acknowledging. "Do you have any up-to-date maps of the area?" she asks. "Some of the people in the truck were heading towards what they referred to as the nearest settlement; nothing more specific than that."
Steve sighs and takes a seat. "So we follow the tracks as far as they take us. We can decide what to do from there. Unless, of course, someone has a better idea?"
Like I said... I don't see much chance of us catching up to that other vehicle unless something went seriously wrong. My vote is on following the footprints.
Fera'Sel shrugs. "We're more likely to find the missing equipment if we follow the truck, but whatever works for you."
We're more likely to find absolutely nothing if we follow the truck... At least this way, we can collect on the rest of the crews bodies.
Renala | "Maybe even find survivors, who knows more about the situation," Renala says. "Besides, the truck might be a week ahead of us at least."
Do you think they just drove a few miles down the mountain and decided to stop? They left their entire team for dead up here. They were probably on the next shuttle off this planet.
Fera'Sel sighs. "There's no guarantee we'll find anything if we follow the footsteps either. For all we know, they got wiped away by the weather halfway there and we won't find a trace. It's almost certain what happened to them anyway."
Steve nods at the driver. "Looks that way." he says, nodding towards the datapad sitting atop a crate.
Driver: Alright, tell me when you've decided where to go, will ya? I'm freezing my ass off out here. She heads back to the warmth of the driver's cabin.
Renala | "I still think we should follow the footsteps," Renala says. "Maybe we'll find that settlement they spoke of, if it turns out to not be the mining camp."
Young Human: Can't we do both? See if the truck's nearby, if not, follow the footsteps. Or the other way around. Huh guys?
You'll get no argument out of me there, Fera. I still think we should just cut our losses. We have a truck full of equipment, and proof of what happened to the crew. But if we're sticking around, I feel like we'd have more of a chance at finding the group that didn't have a vehicle.
Fera'Sel raises her arms and returns towards the seats in the trucks. "If you think that's important, then go ahead. I think it's pointless, but the other option is just as pointless.
Every second we sit here and bicker about it, is another second that the snow is covering up our chances of finding either of them. Can we just make a decision and get on with it already?
Steve shakes his head. "There. Follow the footpri-..." he begins before being cut short by the sound of a weapon being discharged.
Tyranniac| Old turian looks outside with a sharp gaze. "That sounded distant. No source of concern for us."
Steve stands from his seat and looks out the back of the truck. "Wouldn't matter anyways. There's no telling where it came from. We stick to the plan. The tracks are all we have to go on right now."
Renala turns her head sharply towards where the gunshot came from, before nodding agreeing to the turian. "Still, this isn't Omega," she says. "That we're not alone up here… we should at least be more careful from now on in our job."
Steve makes his way over to the driver's cabin. After a short knock on the door, he opens it and pokes his head inside. "We're going after the footprints. Follow em' as far as you can and keep your eyes open for anyone. At this point we're most likely looking for bodies..." he says before returning to his seat.
Renala nods. "Doesn't seem like it," she says, frowning. "And with the gunshot, I fear it might get even worse."
Tyranniac| The truck comes to a halt rather slowly. A speaker in the passenger compartment comes online. "There's... uh... a body here, you want to check it out?"
Steve opens the back door and exits the vehicle. He stops once outside and begins to survey the land.
Tyranniac| They have been driving in the trail of the survey crew. Ahead of them lies a heavily clothed body in the snow. The trail indicates a brief stop, but continues onwards.
Fera'Sel wakes up from her slumber and hears the announcement, but decides to go back to sleep for the moment.
Tyranniac| The area appears devoid of most things. A keen eye could spot a small mammal walking around in the distance.
Tyranniac| The body appears frozen all the way through, and is quite clearly devoid of life. As it is turned over it is revealed to be a male human with a short black beard.
Steve begins checking the man's pockets. "Looks like he froze to death." he says, glancing over his shoulder momentarily to see what Renala is doing.
Steve stands up and puts his hands on his sides, scanning in the direction that the tracks continue. "The others must've just kept going. Can't blame them, really."
Renala was still looking around, but turned her head towards Steve just after he spoke. She nods acknowledging. "Yeah," she says, not having any information to add. "Should we get going again, then?" She glances at the corpse, specifically looking for gunshot wounds.
Steve turns back towards Renala, "Yeah. Nothing else for us here." he says, moving past the asari and back towards the vehicle.
Steve shakes his head as he reenters the truck. "Nothing useful, anyways. Keep following those tracks."
Renala follows after Steve back to the truck, and enters it. When inside, she gets back to her seat and buckles herself in.
Steve stands for a moment longer and relays the information, or lack thereof, to the others before retaking his seat. "Just a body. Looks like he froze to death."
