#RedrockAgency – December 6, 2015
The new Redrock Agency headquarters now stands fully furnished, and almost all of its systems have been brought online - the base VI is not yet installed, and as such both defenses and surveillance needs to be operated manually. The place is still in a bit of a mess from the move - new furniture and equipment is mixed with what could be salvaged from the old base. As Ilyna arrives the sky's clear, sun shining down through Aite's rings.
Ilyna steps out of the sky-car taxi that took her there, and pays the fare. She studies the exterior visible to her before she starts to approach the entrance.
The nearest camera shows no sign of moving to track her - the automation is clearly offline. The door is unlocked, judging by the green holographic interface.
Ilyna opens the door and steps inside, taking a moment to look around the lobby. She hasn't been here before, and thus do not know where to find anything specific.
Philip is seated behind the reception desk, boots on the counter and asleep with a datapad in his lap, displaying a broadcast of the bi-annual Aite Ring Race X-treme.
Ilyna considers waking him up, but refrains from it and instead proceeds into the hallway, looking for signs on the wall and doors that might lead her to the Chief's office.
Each of the offices are clearly marked with names as a part of the holographic interface to open or lock the doors. The door to Vasquez' office is unlocked.
Ilyna checks the labels on all doors along that stretch of the hallway before returning to the right one. She knocks on the door to Vasquez' office.
Renala is in the server room/VI core, typing on the VI mainframe's support element, which is a console built into it for direct access. There's a datapad with some instructions taped on the inside of the door covering the the hardware when it's not phyiscally accessed. She looks very tired, but she is slowly but surely setting things up.
Vasquez is seated by her desk as the door to her office slides open. She motions for Ilyna to come in, offering a brief but genuine smile. The office looks similar to her old one in most regards. The desk is not yet as swamped with papers and datapads, remaining mostly clear aside from a set of holographic screens, a plate with a half-eaten sandwich and a cup of coffee.
Ilyna returns the smile before walking inside. "How are you?" she asks before casting a glance around to see if there's anywhere to take a seat.
Vasquez ponders the question for a moment, the smile not entirely gone. "I'm... good. A lot to be done getting everything set up here, but.. I'm good." Her right hand reaches for the left, brushing against the ring briefly before she crosses her hands and leans against the desk. "You?"
Ilyna nods. "I'm, as well," she says. "It's really good to finally be out of the hospital." She glances at the doorway. "I'd be glad to help if there's anything I can do,... that Dr. Halisi wouldn't disapprove of, of course."
Vasquez smirks faintly. "Right. I could always use some help with the paperwork - especially the stuff relating to while I was... gone. It'd be good if you could help handle that. That way I could focus on getting us ready to take on new jobs - and finding new jobs. Which is something we really need..."
Ilyna nods. "I can imagine," she says. "The construction must have been expensive." She still hasn't taken a seat. "Though, I would need to bring Li with me to work."
Vasquez raises an eyebrow at the still standing asari and motions for her to sit. "Oh, right... she seems like a nice kid. Is... she the daughter of someone you're seeing, or... what? I'm sorry, I've been out of the loop for so long..."
Ilyna frowns. "No, we found her and a few other children on our mission in Di Yu," she says before taking a seat. "The plan was to leave them all with the authorities on the Citadel, but... she didn't want to leave me."
Vasquez 's eyes widen. "What?" She brings one hand to her mouth, running it across the lower part of her face thoughtfully. "Tell me you found her in New Longhai. Please." She's looking past Ilyna at this point.
Ilyna looks down for a moment, not very eager to answer that. She shakes her head. "No, all of them were found in the building where we left team Charlie," she says. "The older ones needed help I couldn't provide, but... Li is different."
Vasquez closes her eyes, leaning back in her chair and letting out a quiet curse. Upon looking at the asari again she says: "Ilyna... you're telling me she's one of the cultists? Do you realize what those... those artifacts do to people...? What the hell would possess you to think it was a good idea to take her in?!"
Ilyna shakes her head. "She's six," she says, sounding quite defensive. "She's a troubled child, but I don't believe for a second that she's a cultist."
Vasquez clearly isn't liking arguing this, and lets out a sigh. "You can't know kind of exposure she's had to those things. What her parents taught her - what if she starts hearing voices? What will you do? What if she becomes violent?"
Ilyna looks down. "One of them did," she mutters before looking back up. "He tried to kill me, and he might have succeeded if Li hadn't stopped him." She stands up, and takes a step away from the desk, not wanting to face the Chief while she does her best to keep her emotions in check. "She'll adapt," she then says, "and I'll help her every step of the way. Those aren't inevitabilities."
Vasquez runs a hand through her hair, studying Ilyna in silence for some time before responding. "Shit... you got a couple of hundred years on me - I'll trust your judgement. Just... be careful. There's still a lot of unknowns dealing with this shit..."
Ilyna wipes her eyes. "Sorry, I.... Sorry," she sighs before returning to her seat. "I'll try to figure something out. So I won't have to bring her to work every day."
