Debrief and aftermath (Operation Flooded Sphere)
The team has only recently arrived back at Redrock HQ. The Enforcers were all pulled aside and spoken to by Brutus and are now off taking showers upstairs. Brutus has returned to the conference room, awaiting Vasquez' arrival to tie up any loose ends and answer any questions before him and his team depart. Enough time has passed during Brutus' talk with his team for the Redrock team to have taken their showers and dressed down from combat
Renala emerges from the locker room after having taken a quick shower following her return. She's wearing a white fleeze jacket that is zipped halfway up, obscuring the faint text on the red top beneath. She is reading something on her omni-tool while descending the stairs.
Vasquez enters the conference room, having taken the time to talk with the Redrock team, as well as greeting the newly freed Adrasteians. She gives Brutus a nod and takes a seat at the table, near the end, putting down the datapad in her hand. "All prisoners secured, everyone back in one piece... I'd call this mission a big success. In no small part thanks to the solid intel and plan you provided."
Tank calls out from the rec room as Renala approaches the stairs: "Tivey! Come here." She is stood not far from the door, eating a sandwich.
Brutus gives a respectful bow of his head as he takes the seat across from Vasquez, resting his taloned hands atop the table. "It does seem to have went well. It's unfortunate that we were unable to cross off Soratine, but all-in-all I'd say it was quite the success. My team was able to recover a bit of intel that we'll be looking through as soon as we reach Adrasteia. Hopefully it will shine a little light on who else may be involved
in Soratine's business. If we're able to pin down a few details about his buyers, it may give us enough to act on."
Renala raises an eyebrow and turns around. "Tankovich," she says with a nod as she stops just inside the rec room. Her omni-tool's interface shuts off a second later.
Vasquez nods, her interest in pursuing the slavers quite obvious. "I can promise you Redrock will be interested in assisting if you find anything on the buyers. At least we've managed to prevent anyone from being sold into slavery in the immediate future." She pauses briefly, and after a moment's consideration adds: "One of my people expressed concern over the condition of and what's next for those that were rescued. Does
Tank is wearing the same clothes that she were before the mission, minus winter coat, of course. She goes back to the kitchen as Renala enters, grabbing a glass of juice from the counter and taking a sip. "Mission went well. I had doubts about fighting alongside... mercenaries, but you have proven reliable. This kind of mission... reminds me of old job."
Brutus gives a slight nod. "Absolutely. We have no reason to believe that the people Soratine chose were anything more than targets of opportunity. Nothing seems to indicate any of them having a personal connection to Soratine, so there's little reason to believe they're in any immediate danger. It would surprise me if Soratine's people even know their names. That being said, they'll be put up in the Torthus-Cross hotel for the time
being. It should give them a bit of a buffer to the rest of the world. Allow them to recover at their own pace. What they've been through must have been pretty traumatic." he explains with a sigh. "We'll do our best to make sure they're safe and taken care of, Chief Vasquez." he continues with a stern nod, "That much I can assure you."
Renala approaches the counter, but stops before she's within reach of anything on it. "Working with new hires had me worried too, I'll admit," she says, followed by a shrug. "That sport of yours is pretty much this without the explosives and blood, isn't it?"
Vasquez seems relieved by the answer given, and nods. "The team will be glad to hear that. I realize help like that is far from guaranteed out here." she says with a faint sigh, glancing briefly at her datapad. "I hope you're happy with Redrock's performance?"
Oxaris enters the rec room shortly behind Renala, having been in the locker room sorting out her armour. She had changed into her early attire from before the mission. She offers the pair a nod, but doesn't interrupt their conversation. She simply crosses over to the sofa.
Tank furrows her eyebrows, looking confused for a moment before shaking her head. "Ah, no... I do not mean-... I used to be police officer. Anti-terror force." she clarifies. The question seems to stick with her for a moment though, and she adds, her gaze a little distant: "The UCC has plenty of both, actually."
Renala chuckles. "Sorry, I should have known that," she says, rubbing the back of her neck. "Yeah, I can definitely see the similarities there: saving civilians from fucked up people like that."
Brutus' mood visibly brightens. "Absolutely. I apologize that Mr. Cross was unable to stay for the entirety of the operation, he's quite busy." he offers apologetically, "But rest assured, when I fill him in on the details I will speak very highly of Redrock's involvement. Mr. Cross never seemed to have any doubts in your agency's abilities anyway. I just hope-..." he trails off and a slight chuckle escapes him, his hard military
exterior cracking momentarily, "...The Enforcers employ a wide variety of people. People with varying levels of discipline. We do our best to set them on the right path, but it's a difficult job." He sighs, realizing he's tiptoeing around what he's trying to say, "That is to say... I hope today didn't sour your impression of the Enforcers." he finally gets around to, "They-... Alpha squad wouldn't have been my first choice for
this operation, but Mr. Cross insisted. He thought this may be the push they needed. He saw something in them that I was unable to." he admits with a shrug, "I'll need to have a talk with them about the comms chatter, but overall I must admit I was pleased with their performance."
Tank nods, not responding immediately as she's taken another bite of her sandwich - space cow sausage from the looks of it. "Yes. I chose to seek work here at Redrock because of the reputation for taking morally sound jobs. I know many organizations out here in lawless space are less discerning. It is sad how unsafe people are out here."
Oxaris offers a quiet chuckle as she sits down, glancing over at the pair. "Glad to see we're out here for the same reason, then."
Vasquez smirks slightly, and shakes her head. "I have only had a little time to speak with my people, but they haven't expressed any real concerns about Alpha squad. And it seems to me they accomplished their goal... although they could use some practice keeping the chatter mission focused." Her smirk fades, and it takes a moment before she continues. "Actually... our team has shown more concern about the actions of Bravo
Renala nods. "Well, you've come to the right place, then," she says, "The top of the chain is idealistic to a fault, but it's gotten them results, so what do I know." She looks over at Oxaris. "Good job out there, Ortoratus," she offers a small smile.
Tank glances in Oxaris' direction and remarks: "I think we have different ideas of what that means, turian." with a faint hint of hostility in her tone before returning her attention to Renala. "Hmh... I was meaning to ask... the people we worked alongside, I know little of them, being new to the planet. I was hoping you could tell me."
Oxaris nods at Renala, returning the smile in kind. Though, she does note tanks barbed remark. She furrows her brow and falls quiet.
Renala frowns. "Cross' people?" she asks. "I've seen them everywhere in Adrasteia, but this is the first time I've worked with them. They... get results."
Xavier pokes his head into the rec room. Dressed in a pair of jeans and a button-up untucked black shirt which he's working to finish buttoning over a white tanktop, his eyes scan the room until they spot Tank. "I thought that was you I heard, chica. Look, I'ma have to get goin'. Figured I should say bye, like a proper gentleman and shit, right? I didn't want you to be missin' me and wonderin' where I was." he says with a big grin and
a wink. "I'ma be back to climb up that tower for you, though! You wait and see!" he assures her. As he finishes with his final button, he adjusts the bag slung over his shoulder and raises a hand, looking between Tank, Renala and Oxaris. "Take care of yourselves. Was good kickin' ass with you." Rayze stomps past behind him, seemingly acting as the pack mule of the team as he lugs their gear down the hall.
Brutus glances briefly towards the table, giving a slight nod before resuming eye contact."The Uchidas are-.... efficient. I understand how it may seem, sending them in against the Dome's security team. The unfortunate fact is that we spent many nights searching for alternative ways of handling this situation. Perhaps negotiating with the security team. Asking for permission to operate within their colony. Asking for permission,
unfortunately, means they may say no. We have no way of knowing what their ties to Soratine are. So had they denied us permission to rescue our people, we would have done so anyway. Only now, they would have known who was calling the shots. Which presents the possibility that the entire colony views Adrasteia's actions as open hostility. Potential for more collateral damage." he gives a tired sigh, making it clear that they've
been through the logistics of the situation many times, "It's... complicated. At the end of the day all we could be sure of was: The Dome's security allowed Soratine's people to take up residence there. Does that mean they deserved a death sentence? Probably not. But they allowed Soratine's men to keep innocent people as captives. Whether knowingly or not, it's their job to keep their colony safe. They failed to do so and
nearly ruined the lives of innocent Adrasteians in the process. The Uchidas' methods may seem cold, but they get the job done. I assure you, no more damage was done than absolutely necessary."
Vasquez listens in silence, a serious look on her face as she studies Brutus while he speaks. When he's done she offers another nod, her gaze moving briefly to her datapad. "I understand. And I agree. They allowed these scum to operate. Protected them, even. I don't have any sympathy for them, Commander. I speak for my team, and feel I need to make their concerns known, but as far as I'm concerned those people were far
from innocent." she says, her tone inevitably rather grim as her own feelings on the matter make themselves known.
Brutus eases up slightly, giving another nod as the smile returns to his face, pleased to see that their methods haven't soured Vasquez' impression of them. "Then on that we agree, Chief." He gives a roll of his stiff shoulders as he glances around briefly, "I suppose I should probably get ready to depart with my team, we have a bit of a trip ahead of us. Were there any other matters that require my attention beforehand?"
Tank seems about to respond to Renala when Xavier pops in. As before, she seems amused by his ridiculous, and literarily nonsensical attempts at flirting, but there's a subtle hint of blushing as she responds with a smirk and a small shake of her head, saying simply: "Good job out there, pieseczku." before lifting her hand in a wave.
Renala waves as well. "You too," she says, mostly happy that he didn't seem to overhear what she just said earlier.
Xavier gives one last nod, grin still plastered to his face, before backing into the hall and following behind Rayze. His rambling can be heard from down the hall as he begins to talk Rayze's ear off.
Vasquez leans back as she ponders the question for a moment before shaking her head. "No, that's it... and if there's anything else I'm sure it can be handled once you've returned to Adrasteia. I have no intentions of keeping you here any longer. I assume you'll be transporting the former captives as well?"
Brutus gives a nod as he pushes out his chair and rises to his feet. "That's correct. We have transportation awaiting outside." he says, "If any questions happen to crop up, don't hesitate to contact me. You have my information." He steps aside, pushing his chair back in before resting his gaze on Vasquez once more. "It's been an honor working alongside Redrock Agency. I hope we get the chance again. Hopefully under less... grim
Vasquez stands up as well, giving a final nod to Brutus. "Same, Commander." she says before collecting her datapad and starting to type something in.
Oxaris hums a laugh, her mandibles twitching. "It truly is something," she says in agreement. She leans back into the sofa, a content sigh escaping her as she relaxes.
Tank seems to consider saying something else, but instead eats the last of her sandwich, washing it down with the juice as she leans against the kitchen counter.
Renala starts walking towards the door. "I'll get back to work," she says. "If you two have any issues with the tech around here, you know where to find me."
Tank nods to Renala and then starts moving towards the exit as well, even though she seemed in no rush to leave before. She starts heading back to the lockers.
