#RuinsOfRakhana – September 15, 2016
Day 3 (2PM): After about half an hour of packing, Seriah is ready to head out, backpack filled with as much as she can carry, and more still shoved into various pockets and pouches, or just strapped directly onto her armor. The trip back to the bunker is uneventful, and Seriah is silent, quietly walking on, weighed down by what she's brought. As the half-open blast doors come into view up ahead and they start crossing the flat
open space that leads to it the first drops of rain start to fall, plinking against their armors and splashing against the dry ground. Seriah tugs at her hood to make sure her face is shielded, putting goggles back into place.
Renala is wearing her sealed suit of armor, but the rain makes her increase her pace to limit exposure. Renala would have tried to offer to carry some of her items in her own backpack. "We're almost there," she says over comms once rain starts to pour. "The local is still with us." She has updated the bunker crew earlier about their return, including the drell and her possibly knowing about a spacecraft.
Nathan manages to drag himself towards the bunker, the fatigue and wear of the past couple of days finally hitting him like a train. As the pain begins to smatter down, he increases his pace but only barely. "Need... sleep...".
Korio remains towards the rear of the group, rifle clenched in his hands. "It may be an opportunity to test out that water filtration unit you found." he suggests, glancing upwards as the rain patters against his visor.
The search of the first floor did not take long, as most of the passages were collapsed, filled with rubble and even sand that had poured down through collapsing concrete damage long ago by means unknown. Of the few rooms they were able to access however, one held something of note - an armory, filled to the brim with antique drell weaponry. Rifles and pistols line racks along the walls, well-sealed crates contain crude grenades,
relying on pins to keep their contents from detonating. The storage seems completely untouched by looters, even after 300 years, and while worn by the elements most of the equipment seems functional. Worst off is the ammunition by far, with many of the metal containers holding nothing that can be used. Still, more than enough remains to make use of it should there be need. Of course, with the group being as well armed as they are
that eventuality seems unlikely. There are a few unusual pieces among the armaments, including a long tube with massive metal arrows accompanying it. A rocket launcher of the old sort, with none of the functionality or miniturization of a modern device. Another is a rotary cannon, very similar in nature to those mounted in the base's ceiling, although not installed yet, the circular anchor sits attached to nothing, wires packed
Seriah quickens her pace as well as the rain hits. She gladly took up Renala on the offer to help carry what she's brought, but it has done little to lighten her own burden, rather leading to bringing more. She gestures at the bunker. "Ba fion qiare. Fa rhall in fet rora." she says, continuing to move.
Jason has spent most of the past couple days helping Steve bring the items up, assuming they would possibly serve as better trade-fodder should the need arise. Now, all of the items lay across the floor atop a canvas sheet from the destroyed tent. He's seated atop a crate, looking over the arrow-tube-launcher-dealy that sits across his lap. "Wonder what this was used for..." he mutters aloud, holding it with a hand on each end
and giving it a quick shake, "Probably some sort of big drell-ninja-grappling-hook..." He looks to Ehanis with a furrowed brow, "You think drell had ninjas?" he asks, his attention only being briefly torn away as he hears the sound of Renala's voice. "Left the door unlocked for you. Come on in." he announces, his gaze returning to Ehanis.
The rain is picking up in intensity, and the little that splashes against Korio's visor lingers, gnawing away ever so slightly at the outermost layer of the reinforced material. Certainly no risk of it eating through the sturdy visor, but just a little bit of damage is enough to reduce visibility, the perfect transparency of the visor ruined.
Ehanis nods. "Of course," she says. "Drell are quick and strong, so one with martial arts training sounds fucking terrifying." She has helped where she could with carrying and organizing their findings when she's not tending to Namira.
Jason nods but frowns, glancing down at the device. "Stupid ninjas..." he mutters, "...Need a good old fashioned headkick..." He stands from his crate and sets the ninja-drell-grappling-hook down on the canvas sheet with the other weaponry as he awaits the arrival of the away team.
Renala nods to Korio. "Exactly what I was thinking," she says. "And she might be able to help me if it doesn't work." She glances at Seriah, but doesn't give her a response as none of the words translate.
Korio swipes at his visor with a gauntleted hand, blinking hard as the material erodes right before his eyes. "This rain seems to contain a much higher acidic value than I had assumed." he says, "Do you think the filtration device will be able to handle it?"
Steve is seated near the bunker door on one of the crates. As Jason said, a path has been cleared for them to enter and Steve has his boot propped up against the side of another crate, blocking the doorway with his leg as he looks out into the landscape beyond the bunker. "We got ourselves a freeloader?" he calls out as he spots the away team, a small grin showing through his breather. He raises a gauntlet into the air, giving a
Ehanis raises an eyebrow, but she doesn't say anything. She starts moving towards the doorway to get a better look at the away team's new member.
Renala nods. "I'm willing to bet that is what it was made for," she says, "but we'll find out soon enough."
Nathan lumbers towards the entrance, waving lazily at Steve as he approaches. "Yep. Meet Seriah. Seriah, meet Steve, another human for you to ignore and only to talk to Korio," he calls out in reply.
Steve swings his legs off the crate to keep from blocking the away team's path. "Eh, it's all the same to me." he says with a dismissive shrug, "Talk. Don't talk. So long as she can get us to where we're goin' I don't really give a fuck."
Seriah studies Steve for a moment before raising her hand, mimicking his gesture uncertainly before walking through the blast doors into the tunnel, her gaze wandering around under her goggles.
Jason approaches the tunnel entrance with Ehanis, a smirk crossing his lips as he spots the team all in one piece. "Now whose not looking so good, Ten?" he teases as he nears the man, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder as he reaches the barricade. "Seriously, though. Thanks." he says sincerely, "I needed the rest. We're not gonna be doing much in this weather, so we'll make some food and everyone can get some much needed
sleep tonight." His gaze drifts over to Seriah and he moves his hand from Nathan's shoulder, extending it towards her, "And you, I've been told, might have our ticket home. So in the meantime? Welcome to our home-away-from-home." he says before adding in a mutter: "Far away from home..."
Korio remains behind Renala, merely nodding as she responds. "If you require any assistance, just let me know. While this journey has been difficult, I do not believe we should squander this opportunity to aquire water. I can rest when we're done." he offers.
Renala returns the wave before addressing Korio. "Depends, pointing and nods should suffice," she says, "but I'll keep it in mind." Once she's out of the rain, she turns to Steve. "It's great to be back," she says with a long sigh. "How's the search going?"
Seriah looks at Jason's hand, and listens to his incomprehensible alien speech. Now that they're in the shelter of the tunnel she lowers her hood and moves the goggles to her forehead once more. "A [appreciate] fin arerialihe. A bin kio fohanah it soran an fes an a [swear] sio sora tha bin a sio fa [skies]."
Nathan waves Jason off with a grumble, although his voice lightens fractionally. "Hope you don't mind, but I'm going to go crawl into the closest bed and sleep for a week...". He plods towards the tent, reaching out to open it and peer in.
Steve gives a nod over towards the canvas material now covered in weaponry. "Think we just about cleared this place out. Found a whole armory. I ain't too sure they'll be much use to us, but we might be able to get a few more things outta that drell and his people if we trade 'em." He gives a shrug, standing from the crate and placing his hands on his hips as he looks over the ancient weapons, "Though they seemed a like a bunch
of stubborn fucks, so I don't know. If this ship is for real, then maybe it won't even be a factor."
Jason smirks and merely pats Nathan on the shoulder as he passes by. As the untranslated nonsense floods his ears, he blinks a couple times before peering over Seriah's shoulder towards Korio. "What did she just say?" he asks plainly.
Korio shakes his head. "I do not speak her language." he responds as he continues past the others to get out of the rain. "It may be worth returning to Kell's camp tomorrow and ask for access to his translation software before setting out for this ship. Otherwise communicating with her could be a roadblock."
Jason sighs loudly, his smirk wavering slightly before he props it back up and looks to the drell. "Well tutti-frutti-soggy-walrus to you, too." he says in as friendly of a tone as he can. Not like she can understand anyway, it's the tone that counts! He taps his fingertips against his chest, "Jason Wolfe." he continues, giving a gesture over towards the tents, "Feel free to take a seat. Relax."
Jessica is seated in the tent beside Namira, looking over her Avenger. As Nathan opens the tent flap, she looks up at him. "So?" she asks, "Is true? This drell you have found knows a way home?"
Nathan steps inside and yanks off his helmet, idly shaking out his damp hair. "Maybe," he says. "It might be an Eclipse vessel. But we're having trouble communicating, so we're not certain yet." He takes a seat at the edge of the tent and starts to strip off his armour, his movements slow and aching. "I'm sure as shit hoping it is."
Renala nods. "I'd place a high value on borrowing one of their omni-tools for a little while," she says. "And maybe some more food and water."
Seriah glances at Korio at the mention of Kell, but doesn't say anything, instead responding to Jason with a gesture at herself and a small smile. "Seriah." she says before looking around at the others. She points at Namira with a questioning look. "Fot in fes bin qah? In fa in?"
Steve chimes in, giving a nod as Renala speaks. "Sounds like a plan to me. Give me a couple canteens of water and stick Ten and the rookie with me-..." he gestures towards Ehanis, "...We'll hoof it on down to the camp in the morning and be back before ya know it. Gettin' sick of sittin' around in here anyway." he offers. His gaze drifts over towards the new drell and he furrows his brow, craning his neck to get a better view of
her. His interest in getting a response from Jason seems to dissipate as his attention is pulled away. "Hey, where did she-..." he begins, a confused gaze moving from Renala to Jason before settling on Seriah, "Where did you get that!?" he asks, stepping towards her with a finger outstretched to her chestplate.
Seriah takes a step back, startled. Her right hand reaches for the handle of her knife, sharp gaze locked on the human. "Fot? A kio fet araron a!"
Jessica sighs loudly. "You and me both... I am tired of this planet. I am tired of this tent. I am tired-..." he places a hand on Namira's shoulder and gives her a little nudge, "....of this asari. I am tired of you and your face. I just want to go home." She looks down at her weapon for a moment before setting it aside and resting the palm of her hand against her wound. A quick, pained grunt escapes her, "Is stupid, but I never
Steve's hand darts towards the SMG at his thigh, resting atop it for now. "The fuck did you just-..." his gaze snaps over to Renala, "What did she say!? Why does she have that!?"
Nathan doesn't even glances at Jessica as she complains, although he can understand her feelings for the most part. He sets his chest-piece to the side, brushing off some of the sand. However, hearing Steve, he pushes open the tent again and looks out. Seeing Briggs reaching for his weapon, his eyes widen and he staggers out, hand outreached. "Woah, woah! Calm
Renala nods, but she doesn't get to respond before Steve threatens their guest. "Watch your tone, she doesn't understand a word you say," she says, grabbing his arm headed for the SMG. "The ship she knows the location of belongs to the Eclipse. It might be the only chance we get, so please calm down."
Jason quickly steps between Steve and Seriah, placing a hand out towards each of them. "Whoa! Calm the fuck down!" he orders, his voice in tune with Nathan's as he looks specifically towards Steve. "She's a guest. She can help us. What does it matter where she got it from?"
Steve continues to stare harshly at the drell, only Renala's words seeming to register with him. He allows his hand to be pulled away from his weapon. His eyes shoot down to his SMG, as if he didn't even realize he was reaching for it. He blinks hard a couple of times and nods. "Yeah-.... yeah..." he mutters, looking back to the drell. He raises his other hand towards her, palm outward. "Shit... sorry... just caught me a bit off
guard..." he says softly. He brings the hand to his chestplate, "I apologize." he says to their drell guest. His gaze moves to Jason, then Nathan as well, giving a quick nod of his head to each of them, "I apologize..." he repeats. "Might be a little on edge." he adds, forcing a quick chuckle along with it.
Nathan furrows his brow, looking between each of them before nodding slowly. "We all are, Steve," he says slowly, but remains quiet to let Jason deal with it.
Seriah slowly relaxes her stance, clearly confused by the exchange. She looks to Renala, perhaps hoping for some explanation. "A kio fet araron. Fot in fin ariot?"
Jason lowers his arms, staring down Steve for a moment longer before his gaze shifts to Seriah. He offers her a friendly smile. "It's fine. Everything is okay." he says.
Jessica climbs to her knees and shuffles over behind Nathan, attempting to peer out around him. "What is going on, mmm?" she asks, "Is the drell as crazy as the big blob of pink?"
Renala lets go of Steve, and she gives a small shrug. "It's fine," she says. She walks over to near the tent and crouches down beside the water filtration device.
Nathan shrugs, keeping an eye on Steve. "Nooooo... Just Steve," he mutters quietly to her before trying to squeeze hois way back inside.
Jessica lets out a breath through her nose. "Ah." she says simply as she shuffles back beside Namira. "I do not like that man. Seems like an asshole." she shrugs, wincing slightly in pain again as moving towards the tent opening so quickly seems to have upset her wound, "Assholes everywhere..." she sighs, "Surrounded by assholes... Is not many people I would rather be stuck on a deserted planet with less than you people. Just my
luck, yes? I don't know how long I'm going to be able to put up with you all. Maybe you will all have to go and find your own place to stay if we are stuck here much longer." she snorts. As Ehanis enters, she gestures towards her, "The asari can stay. Maybe even the drell lady. I will make my own colony. We will call it: Jessica's Harem. Mmm? Is nice idea, yes?"
Korio joins Renala near the filtration device, taking a knee beside it. He glances back over his shoulder at the others briefly. "He seems to be in a sour mood." he comments. "Let us hope that ship is where she believes it to be and we do not need to stay here any longer than necessary."
Seriah remains confused, and a bit on edge, as she walks over to the wall near the tent and slips her pack of her back, putting it down carefully and then looking around the tunnel before gesturing at it. "Fasha ara the fin. A bin fet sion fan." she says before entering the tent, looking down at the asari.
Nathan looks at Jessica, blinking slowly. "Riiiiiigggghhhhhhttt," he says softly before removing his leg pieces. "Good luck with that. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to try and get some sleep soon."
Ehanis shrugs. "I'm down with that," she says jokingly before sitting down beside her things. "Probably best to see where the drell lady takes them first, though."
Jessica gives a shrug. "Whaaaatever." she responds to Nathan. As Seriah enters, she gives her a small wave. "Welcome to Jessica's harem." she says, "Don't mind him. He is not a part of this community." she says with a gesture towards Nathan, "We found him dying and dehydrated in the gutter and took pity on him. He will be out by morning." she teases.
Jason and Steve remain near the barricade. Jason keeps his voice down, but given his gestures and expression, it's pretty clear he's not happy with the man.
Nathan grumbles under his breath, giving pointed looks to Jessica as he leaves his boots on. He starts to try and make himself comfortable in the tent, taking a few quick sips from his canteen. He attaches a breather over his mouth as he glances to the Drell. "Sup," he greets before nodding to Ehanis.
Seriah is blissfully unaware of the ongoing conversation, but returns Jessica's wave while unbuckling the strap of her breather mask for a while. It is a much bulkier model than those used by the mercenaries.. "A an Seriah." she says with a gesture to herself. Her gaze falls on Namira."In fa rin? Iriaran?"
Renala frowns. "He's not on friendly terms with the big gangs," she says. She leaves the backpack beside the tent. "Now, let's test this thing out." Renala picks the device up and carries it carefully towards the doorway.
Ehanis smirks, but her expression fades as she sees the drell next to Namira. She moves over to her side. "What is it?" she asks with a tilt of her head.
Jessica shrugs her shoulders. "I don't understand your words." she says, though she follows the drell's gaze down to Namira. "She was shot..." She lifts her hand, making a gun out of her middle and index finger and pointing it at Nathan. "PEW" she mimes the motion of the gun's recoil then brings both of her hands to her throat and allows her tongue to hang out of the side of her mouth as she makes a few gurgling noises.
Jason gives a shake of his head, his voice becoming audible as Renala gets close to them again. "I don't know, Steve. Get some rest and I'll think on it, alright? But you've gotta chill the fuck out. Seriously. You were out of line. The last thing we need is to piss off our ticket off this planet. Alright?" he says, giving Steve a pat on the shoulder. It's obvious he's frustrated by the man's reaction, but he's doing his best to
Steve glances down, giving a few nods. His gaze moves to Renala and he acknowledges her with a nod before letting out a deep sigh. "Yeah... Just-...... Yeah, you think on it." he agrees, nodding to himself before stepping away from Jason.
Nathan is merely resting on the ground, eyes fluttering as he contemplates sleeping or trying to listen in on the one-sided conversation.
Seriah observes Jessica's theatrics and then kneels down next to Namira, brushing a hand against the medigel on her throat curiously.
Renala nods to Steve. "Here goes nothing," she says, bobbing her head towards the device in her hands. "Very few things work on the first test." She steps out into the rain and puts the device down on the ground, and wires it up to her suit like she did with the doors. "I just need it to run for a few minutes to see whether it works." The wire is long enough for her to sit in cover, though. "If it does, I'll just leave my
Korio remains near the door beside Renala. "A good idea. It sounds as if the journey to the ship may be a long one. Having extra water to carry with us should lighten the burden slightly."
Jason sighs and steps towards Renala and Korio, leaning against the stack of crates as Renala works. "You have a second, Renala?" he asks before quickly waving her off, "When you're done, I mean. It doesn't need to be right away."
Ehanis gives the edge of the medi gel a gentle tap. "Medi-gel," she says, although she don't know how to explain it without words. She looks up at Jessica, hoping she can put her acting skills to use again.
Renala nods. "I'm going to be tethered to this thing for a while," she says, "so I do have a moment to talk." She doesn't take her eyes off the device, however.
Jessica blinks at Ehanis a few times before realizing she's expected to help. "Oh." she hums, looking back to the drell. "Is-... Is medi-gel." she agrees with Ehanis' assessment with a nod, "Like-..." she trails off, furrowing her brow as she searches for a way to explain it. Suddenly, as if a lightbulb just went on over her head, she brings her hands back up to her throat and begins to make gurgling noises again. One of her hands
reaches to the medi-gel and her finger slides across it. She then brings that finger to her throat and runs it over her make-believe wound and instantly stops gurgling. She takes in a deep breath and gives the drell a big smile. "Is good now, you see? Medi-gel."
Seriah looks at the odd alien and says "Ah [people] in fare fora." before standing up and leaving the tent, shooting a glance in Steve's direction before crouching down to look over her backpack to herself.
Nathan glances across at Jessica's display, chuckling lightly. "I wonder why you never went into acting," he muses as he props himself up on his elbows.
Korio bows his head to Jason. "I-... will return shortly if you require my assistance." he offers to Renala before stepping away to give them some privacy.
Jason looks to Renala with a sigh, "You know him better than the rest of us." he begins, keeping his voice low as he glances briefly over his shoulder towards Steve who is sitting against the tunnel wall and looking over his weapons. "You two live together. I don't think you're wrong about there being a 'high value' on that translation software. But I need you rested for the trip to the ship. Which I plan on being along for.
Jessica is hurt. Steve is offering to take the lead on that one. I think he's going a little stir crazy from being cramped up in this place..." He shifts a bit, still leaning against the crate, "You think I should let him go?" he asks plainly, "After his little display here, I'm not so sure. But I want to know what you think. Just between us."
Ehanis shakes her head and moves to sit down at her spot again. "I think she means to say 'you people are fantastic'," she jokes.
Jessica nods in agreement with Ehanis. "Mmm. She is not wrong." she says. Her gaze moves to Nathan and she gives a shrug, "Mostly." she adds with a snicker.
Renala sighs. "He's a professional, I'm sure he'll manage that," she says. "I should go with him, though. Transferring the necessary data might not be as easy as it sounds."
Jason returns the sigh with a sigh of his own, his gaze focusing on the rain outside of the door. "Are you sure you're up for that, Renala?" he asks, "We have no idea how long we'll be out there looking for this ship. And we absolutely need you there. I don't want you spending all day out there killing yourself. Whatever chance we have of getting that ship up and running- if we even find it- is definitely with you. I want you
Steve continues looking over his weapons. His gaze raises to meet the drell's, then lowers to the Eclipse chestplate, lingering on the familiar armor briefly, but he quickly looks back to his weapons.
Renala frowns. "I understand," she says. "He could ask them to meet us here for the actual transaction, but that means our guest will have to hide when they arrive. She does not seem to like Kell's people, and I'm getting the feeling that's mutual."
Jason furrows his brow. "I don't particularly see the value in walking all the way out there and then asking them to come here... Can't you just-..." he shrugs, gesturing towards Renala's arm, "...Use your omni-tool to show him what to do tonight or something? If he has trouble, he could always contact you over comms or something, right?"
Renala nods. "That might work," she says. "Omni-tools have changed since I was a kid, but I think they'll still have at least one mode of communication in common."
Jason gives a nod. "Alright, do what you can." he says, pushing away from the crate. "Well, then I'll let you get back to-..." he gives a point towards the water filtration device, "Good luck. We could use that water."
Renala returns her attention to the water filtration device. "Of course," she says. "I'll notify you once I know if it's working."
