#AsteroidMine – April 10, 2014
Leah's shoulders slump somewhat. She removes her Mattock from her back and slowly begins loading a new thermal clip into the weapon. "...Ready." she follows up.
Vaden looks down at the floor and then towards the door, clearly nervous. He is no longer armed after dropping his gun.
Renala nods, and unholsters her submachine gun. "I'm ready," she says. "Let's hope it... was just their comms not working."
Administrator shouts at Jason through the packed shuttle. "What's the meaning of this? You said we were safe!"
Jason nods silently to Renala and readies his Revenant. "Quiet. We'll deal with it." he states plainly. "Doors, Jasper."
Jasper sighs and reaches towards the console. With the push of a button, the doors come sliding open.
The shuttle door slide halfway open and then clank into the other shuttle, preventing it from opening fully. There is enough room to exit, but just barely.
Jason takes a deep breath and gives a roll of his shoulders, mentally psyching himself up before lifting his Revenant and squeezing through the door.
Alex sighs and stays in place, knowing she probably wouldn't be allowed to go anywhere. "Can I at least try to help?"
Renala follows Jason, squeezing through the doorway, as well. Once outside, she aims her weapon around the shuttle bay.
There are two bodies in the hangar, by the door leading to the corridor. They are both wearing security officer outfits and have been shot clean in the head.
Renala looks at the bodies with raised brows. "Oh, shit," she says. "This is definitely no comms failure."
Steve looks between Alex and the doctor. "Get your weapon ready, kid." he says in defiance of the doctor as he steps towards the door. "If those assholes that jacked our ride were infected and spread it to the crew here... We're dead anyway." he steps out of the door.
Jason hurries towards the bodies and drops to a knee to check them over. "Dammit.. Not good." he groans before stacking up on the corridor door, "Jasper." he says through comms, "Did you get a count on how many boarded the shuttle when they took it from you?" he asks.
Halisi looks displeased, and shoots Steve an annoyed glance. "You really shouldn't be moving around." She says at Alex.
Jasper remains in the pilot's seat, nervously bouncing his knee, "Three, Jay... I think it was three. Be careful out there."
Alex sighs and rubs her temples, "I can stay here if it makes you happy, but I'm not going to continue laying down."
Leah waits her turn behind Vaden. She looks back at the miners, "Just stay here and remain calm. We'll return when we figure out what's going on." she says, attempting to sound as composed as possible before joining the others outside of the shuttle.
Jason presses the panel beside the door and pokes his head out to peer into the hallway once it slides open, but remains silent.
The corridor beyond the door has several stains of red and green blood, and further along, a single, familiar, blue stain, which trails to an armored salarian body that sits slumped against the wall about halfway through the corridor. There are two doors on each side and a stairway at the end of the corridor.
Jason draws his head back and sighs deeply. "Fuck! Not... Good..." he repeats. He fights back the feeling of dread and swivels into the corridor with his weapon raised. He begins stalking down the hallway.
Jason continues towards the salarian, whispering into his comms as he does, "Leah. Hang back and make sure nothing happens to those miners." he says. He shakes his head at Renala, "I don't know... It doesn't make any sense."
Steve steps into the hallway and follows behind Renala. He's moving at a pretty slow pace, and quite sluggishly.
Vaden follows along the others, his gun pointed at the floor as he looks around as if expecting something to jump out at them at any moment, but nothing does.
Jason sighs as he takes a knee beside the salarian to check him over for wounds. "Maybe our people handled it..." he says hopefully.
The salarian has a tear in the right side of his digital camo armor, from which blue liquid oozes. He also appears to have been shot in the head.
That blue shit... He was infected. The doctor told me all about it, Wolfe. Those things get their tubing into you, and you become one of them. You better make damn sure that thing is dead.
Vaden looks at Renala as she speaks and then lowers his head. "Was wondering what happened..." he says quietly.
Jason rises to his feet. "No Londinium Galactic insignia. I don't think he was one of ours." he says as he cranes his neck to get a look at the gunshot wound in the salarian's head, "Pretty sure we can safely assume he's dead." He continues over to the nearest door on the right side of the hall and stacks up. "Just like before. Room-by-room until we figure out what's going on."
One of the miners exit the shuttle and leans against it for a moment, looking queasy. He then cries out in pain and falls to his knees before starting to throw up - blue.
Leah hurries over the the miner's side. She takes a knee beside him and places a gauntleted hand on his back. She looks over at the doctor through the half-opened door, "You have to help him!" she says.
Halisi moves out the door as she notices what's going on. She only needs a brief look at the miner to realize. Her face starts to fill with terror. "I can't... he's about to turn!"
The door slides open to reveal the team's living quarters. It is empty and looks about the same as when they left.
Leah steps back and raises his Mattock. She trains it on the miner, but looks back towards the doctor apprehensively. "There-... There has to be something we can do, right!? I mean-... We can't just kill him!"
Jason calls out, "Linda!?" as he steps through the door and moves aside to provide ample space for the others to enter if needed as he sweeps his weapon back and forth.
Halisi closes her eyes and shakes her head. "No... it's too late. I-... I'm sorry. I should've-..." The miner slowly starts to stand up.
Leah swallows hard and takes a single step back. "I'm sorry..." she says before squeezing the trigger and firing a trio of rounds into the man.
Jason stomps out of the room. "You're damn right we will..." he mutters as he immediately stacks up on the opposite door.
Renala takes cover by the same door, on the other side of it. She glances towards the hangar at the sound of it. "What happened?" she asks over the comms.
Leah slowly lowers her weapon and looks apologetically towards the doctor. "I-..." she begins over comms, "One of the miners was sick." she says regretfully, "I had to-... I didn't have any choice."
Steve shifts uncomfortably in the hall. "You did what you had to do. That infection gets out on this ship and we're all dead." he replies over comms.
Jason closes his eyes and shakes his head, but doesn't respond. He reaches out and presses the green panel.
Leah doesn't seem comforted by Steve's words in the slightest. "I'm sorry..." she repeats as she looks over the other miners.
The door opens to a storage room. A dead crewmember with clear signs of infection lies on the floor amongst toppled boxes of supplies. There is nothing else of interest.
Halisi shakes her head to herself and stares at the dead miner. "It never ends... we just keep dying one by one..."
No! That's not true... They're going to find out what's going on and secure the ship. Everything is going to be fine....
Renala frowns at the report, and glances inside the room, the dead body doing nothing but affirming her worry. "Fuck." she mutters. "These things... if they're here, we'll have to be more careful."
