#Hospital – September 24, 2015
Li has spent the whole day in the hospital, alternating between bugging Ilyna and playing with the omni-tool Halisi let her borrow. She's currently sitting on the floor, laughing in delight as pictures of various Earth animals project from the tool.
Pip is sat up in bed and has spent most of the day trying to chat with whomever was feeling chatty. Apart from Steve. Fuck that guy. Right now, she's scrolling through a book that she's reading on her omni-tool.
Ilyna hasn't moved from her bed except to use the bathroom, and she has been welcoming to chatting and bugging from others. Right now, she is typing on her omni-tool. She glances over at Li with a smile, trying to sneak a peek at what's displayed on the screen.
Steve blinks a bunch of times as he finally comes to. He uses his arms to push himself up into a seated position. "Hrm... What-..." he groans as he reaches back, running his fingertips along the back of his neck, "....amp?" he groans, somewhat recalling the talk he was having before he was so rudely drugged mid-convo.
Li is currently studying a hologram of a panther climbing a tree - and then pouncing on its prey. When she notices that Ilyna's attention is on her she raises her hands - the omni-tool is on the floor, and thus not affected - and forms claws again, growling with bared teeth.
Ilyna chuckles, and tilts her head. "I can't tell the difference," she says. She also doesn't respond to Steve.
Li seems pleased with this, and makes another growl before brushing her hand through the hologram, causing it to change to a new animal. A colorful parrot. She studies it curiously, remaining silent.
Steve glances over at Ilyna, trying to shake some of the fuzziness out of his vision. "She was jus-...." he trails off and blinks a few times, "...What time is it?"
Ilyna frowns. "Afternoon," she says, not looking up from her screen. "We've been served breakfast and lunch while you were out."
The nurses grab a hold of a side each of Steve's bed. "Lunch." the asari says. "You'll be eating in another room." They start rolling him out, being careful not to hit Li.
Steve shakes his head, "Or how 'bout no?" he protests, "Knock it off, let go. Why do I need to eat in another room?" he asks suspiciously.
The nurses continue to roll him out. As they pass through the doorway the human says. "The others all ate at the same time, don't want to disturb them now. ...and Dr. Halisi wants to have a word with you." They turn in the corridor, going only one door over and then wheeling him into another room - the one Vasquez was in just hours earlier.
Ilyna disables her omni-tool after hitting send. She looks towards Li, a little concerned, as the nurses start rolling Steve out.
Steve continues shaking his head. "Why in the fuck do I need to be in another room for her to talk to me? She had no problem spilling my business all over that room in front of my team."
Li looks after Steve as he disappears from the room, but quickly loses interest and returns her attention to the omni-tool. The next animal is a cobra. Once it starts to lift its head the girl sways her own alongside it, mimicking the flicking tongue.
After placing Steve the two nurses leave. Halisi almost immediately enters with a tray of food - a stew of some sort, with bread and vegetables. She approaches to put the tray in front of him.
Steve looks around, getting a bit frantic at being separated from everyone else. "What in the fuck is this about, Halisi?" he asks, "Is this really required for me to eat a bowl of fuckin' soup? Really?"
Halisi puts the tray in front of him and then takes a step back. "I just wanted to have a word with you in private." She digs into a pocket and extends Steve's pill bottle to him. "Took the liberty of filling this."
Ilyna chuckles at the girl's mimicking before looking at Pip. "He seems to be good friends with T'Iavay," she says. "I haven't really had a chance to get to know the team well, so I don't really know."
Pip hums and leans back into the bed. She changes the topic rather rapidly. "Do you think Jason will mind if I... Avoid missions that involve lots of shootin' from now on?"
Steve holds eye contact, staring the woman down as he snatches the bottle out of her hand. "What you mean is you went through my shit without my permission." he scoffs, popping the top off the bottle. He dumps a few into his palm and tosses them into his mouth, swallowing hard. "What do you want, Halisi?" he asks with a sigh.
We do have a few contracts for security work here in Freedom Falls, I can talk with him and see if we can assign you to one of them.
Halisi takes the chair Jason was earlier sitting on, spinning it around and sitting backwards on it, her arms on the backrest. "All I want is to help, Steve."
Pip shakes her head. "Not what I mean. I'm a mechanic. Not a fighter. Anything mechanical broken, I can fix it, but shootin'? I'll leave that to you guys...".
Steve scoffs as he dips a spoon into the stew and swirls it around. "Of course not. You sure did whisk away my amp awfully quick, didn't ya?" he asks before bringing the spoon up to his lips and taking a quick taste. "And back on the ship? You think I've forgotten what you said? We might not be 'enemies', but I know exactly how you feel 'bout me. Best if you just give me whatever meds you want me to take, hand my amp over and send me o
Ilyna smiles sheepishly. "I'll look into it, but weren't you only contracted for this job?" she asks. "I made sure to move everything important off my omni-tool before we left, so I can't check it."
Pip shrugs with her hands. "I dunno." She grins slightly and sinks lower into her duvet, getting more comfortable. "But if that's the case... Then no worries."
Halisi sighs. "I'm worried about you. I'm not going to pretend to know what it's like to be an L2, but I know it can't be easy. Do you have someone... anyone, looking out for you?"
Steve grabs a piece of bread and dips it into the stew. He nods, keeping his gaze focused on his food, "I do. There's only one person who can look out for me." He glances up at Halisi and lifts his spoon up, pointing it at himself and causing a bit of stew to drip off, "Been on my own a long time. Seem to be doin' well enough so far."
Halisi lets out a frustrated sigh. "You can't go on like that forever. For someone with your condition to isolate yourself emotionally like that, it's not healthy."
Ilyna nods. "I'll get back to you as soon as I know," she says before looking towards Li to see what she's up to.
Li scrolls to a new animal. As an octopus is projected she shrieks and turns away, covering her eyes in fear.
Steve pulls the bread from the stew and tears a large bite off with his teeth. "Oh?" he asks with a mouthful of bread. He chews quickly and swallows the bite down, "With 'my condition'?" He sets his spoon down and his bread beside it, taking a moment to wipe his hands clean. "And what do you know 'bout bein' someone with 'my condition'? You know what I've been through? Hm?"
shakes his head and leans back a bit. "'Course you don't. Easy for you to stand there and talk down to me, ain't it? You think this-... this-..." he stammers as he quickly recalls the words she had just used, "...this 'emotional isolation' is all self imposed? Think it always was? Just do yourself a favor and leave me alone, pat yourself on the back for tryin', and worry 'bout someone else."
Ilyna winces at the shriek and raises an eyebrow. "What is it, sweetie?" she asks, shifting towards the edge of the bed.
Halisi listens to Steve's words, her expression remaining neutral. "I'm not trying to talk down to you... Just trying to help. If you'd cooperate maybe I could develop a better medication plan. Decrease your pain. Even just regular checkups and adjustments could go a long way towards making you more comfortable!"
Li scrambles towards the bed, climbing up to Ilyna and lying down next to her, turning towards the asari and away from the hologram, eyes closed. The omni-tool is still projecting the octopus, flailing its arms.
Steve shakes his head and picks his spoon back up, digging into the stew once more. "I'm plenty comfortable. Meds work fine. And the only pain in my life right now...?" he asks, looking the doctor up and down pointedly.
Ilyna helps her up before she looks at the projector with a tilted head. "I'll change it to something else," she says as a weak biotic shimmer surround her right hand. She pulls the omni-tool towards her hand.
Halisi puts up her hands in defeat, starting to stand up. "Alright, alright. I tried. If you change your mind, feel free to contact me." She glances at the door. "Can I put you back with the others or would you prefer to stay here?"
Steve gives a shake of his head. "No point in puttin' me back. Bring my amp and I'll be outta your hair soon as I'm done eatin'. You ain't got the right to keep me here against my will, and I've had enough of your lectures for one life."
Halisi frowns. "Seriously? You're going to refuse care? That's not a good idea. You're not even close to recovered."
Steve groans loudly. "It's a few gunshot wounds, sweetheart. I've been gettin' my ass shot up half my life. I think I know the do's and do not's of takin' care of it by now."
Ilyna smiles slightly as the gir doesn't see the awful monster chasing them through the air. She taps on the projection to display the next animal.
Li keeps her eyes closed, clutching Ilyna's arm as she's unware that the monster has been vanquished.
Halisi sighs, shaking her head. "The amp is with the rest of your gear." She says, turning and walking out of the room, muttering on her way: "Your funeral..."
As Ilyna taps the projection the octopus is replaced by a butterfly, flapping its colorful wings as it flies.
Ilyna looks at the projection for a few seconds to ascertain that it's safe. "It's fine now," she says, and puts the omni-tool down on the bed in front of herself. She reaches out with her other arm to pull her onto her lap, "We can look at them together."
Li peeks suspiciously at the hologram. Upon confirming that the octopus is gone she smiles, happily sitting in Ilyna's lap. "That's pretty... is it a... bird?"
Ilyna moves the omni-tool closer to them, and looks it over with a hum, looking for anything that would give a sense of scale. "I... don't think it's a bird," she says. "I haven't seen any of them in person, so I can't be sure."
Ilyna continues studying it. "It does," she says with a small smile. "I don't think birds would have a face like that."
Ilyna smiles. "A sound judgement," she says. "We can take a look at the next speciment when you are ready, Dr. Li."
