#MSVJackOfDiamonds – February 11, 2018
Ilyna has been sitting quietly by the bedside, lost in her thoughts for a while. It took her a few minutes between Jason giving her the update and her deciding to visit her in the infirmary; just in case him telling her woke Li up. She tries her best to remain silent once again as she leaves their cabin, casting a glance back as she is at the top rung.
Oxaris has, obviously, been laying in bed, drifting in and out of sleep. The pain across her body has been dulled by the meds, but it still remained prominent in her mind. But she hasn't complained, nor uttered a word of discontent. She has merely laid there, staring at the ceiling in her bouts of consciousness.
Ilyna lets out a slight sigh of relief as she manages to get out of the room without waking either of the two. Once above the hatch, she casts a glance down the hall at Ehanis who seem to have returned to where she found her yesterday. She would go over to check on her to make sure the location is the only thing in common with yesterday, but she couldn't tell how much time she had before Li woke up. Ilyna
makes her way downstairs through the galley, and comes to a stop at the doorway leading to the infirmary. She looks into the room to see if the turian is awake right now, since there has been a few minutes since Jason notified her.
Oxaris notices movement out of the corner of her eyes and she looks to the doorway. Seeing Ilyna there, she smiles, dipping her head gently to her. "Miss T'Rea," she greets. "Glad... glad to see you are doing well." She is clearly still weak, but she's not letting that get her down.
Senya is still sitting in her chair by the desk, slumped. Asleep. Exhaustion can only be staved off for so long.
Ilyna returns the smile, and moves over to her side. She glances over at the doctor who was fast asleep, keeping her in mind as she keeps her voice low. If she worked even half as long as Halisi did last night, then she deserved the rest; unplanned or not. "I'm glad that you made it," she says. "I would like to thank you personally for rescuing Li." She lets out a small sigh. "I only learned of that this
morning," Ilyna continues, "but... I always knew you were instrumental to our success yesterday, and I saw how you never gave up at the end even if you were in no shape to hold a weapon."
Oxaris shifts a little to sit up, grimacing in pain as her wounds flare up. But she bites down on it and looks up to Ilyna, raising a talon in a small gesture. "Thank you for... for your kind words," she rasps, her throat still a little dry. "Heh, I... probably should've held back near the end... I made a mistake that would've had my instructor turning in his grave." She wheezes out a small laugh before
she lowers her hand, nodding faintly. "I am glad... glad she is safe, though. Li, that is. How is she?"
Ilyna places a gentle hand on her shoulder as she notices her trying to sit up, and the accompanying pain. "Be careful," she says. "Moving can't be good for you right now." She casts another glance at the sleeping doctor before addressing her question. "She... is shaken, scared; like everyone else," she says, feeling much more at liberty to give her assessment now than when Li was within earshot. "She has
Oxaris seems to relax slightly at the hand on her shoulder and she sinks a little lower back into the bed. "She was brave," she says, nodding to Ilyna. "I'm sorry that... that she got. We-we were on a platform and... and that creature with a cannon blew it out of the sky... I managed to- to land us, but she...". She grunts and pauses for a moment to let the pain subside before breathing gently. "I'm just
Ilyna frowns. She had noticed Li's injuries, but they were insignificant compares to most other survivors'. Considering their adversaries, anyone getting out of there would have been too much to ask for. Besides, the physical injuries pale in comparison to the mental stress she must have been through and is still going through. "You have nothing to apologize for," she says firmly. "We were facing an unknown
enemy, with unknown tactics and capabilities." She lets out a long sigh. "I'm glad all of you survived," she says. "You answered the call for an urgent mission with little information, and for that... thank you."
Oxaris nods faintly, her mandibles twitching slightly. "We're a unit, miss T'rea," she says softly, firmly. "We may-...may not all get along. We may quarrel and bicker... but in the end, we will be there for one another. No matter what." She smiles. "If the call is ever made again, I-...I will be there. As will the others." She weakly reaches her talons up to place over Ilyna's hand and squeeze it once.
Ilyna smiles as the talons are placed on her hand, seeming at ease despite how sharp they can be. "That doesn't make my appreciation any lesser, Ortoratus," she says. "That's the ideals we hold for Redrock Agency, and I'm glad you share them. It's... probably not what people expect when they sign on with a mercenary company on a world like Aite."
Oxaris chuckles, wincing in pain as she removes her hand from Ilyna's. "It's how Turians are. We're taught to... to put others above ourselves. So I guess Redrock is... is a good fit for me." She grunts as she places her hand on her bandage, looking down at them. "I'll... I'll be talking to Halisi about the fastest method of-...of treatment for this. I can't... I can't be down for long."
Ilyna sighs, but she can't help but chuckle at the turian's insistence of getting back to the fight. "I know very well how you turians can be," she says with quite a bit of affection in her voice. She glances off to the doorway. "If there is a way to make your recovery quick, I'm sure Halisi has already thought of it," she says, "but you'll get the time you need to rest and recover. We look after our team."
Oxaris is almost of the verge of talking, on explaining why she needs to get back to fighting condition so rapidly. But she bites it back, nodding at Ilyna's words. She can't tell them. Not yet. "I...I got that feeling from you all," she quips softly, breathing gently. "How... how are you? You-you were the only non-human to be... be put in one of those pods."
Ilyna frowns, the lighter tone of her conversation disappearing completely at the mention of the pod. While they may have escaped the collector ship, the implications of that are still with them. And she couldn't shake those concerns when there was so much else on her mind, like Li's future, Ehanis' state, her feelings for Halisi. "It... It was horrible," she says after a few seconds of silence. "Being
paralyzed, unconscious, and..." She takes a deep breath. "It felt like that was it, the battle was over, and...." She swallows, her mind replaying the moment when the alien liquid engulfed her. "It broke my heart that my last moments would be spent... like that," she says, barely above a whisper, "not knowing where Li was, and...." She falls silent, looking down at the floor.
Oxaris listens quietly, watching the asari for a moment before she struggles to sit up, the pain flaring in her chest. But he bites it down for a minute so she can almost slump to Ilyna to place both her hands on the woman's shoulders. "Miss T-... Ilyna. As long as... as there is breath in your chest and-and your heart beats, the fight is never-... never over. Your little girl is safe and you are not-
urgh... you're not there any longer. And if-... if they ever come back...". Her jaw grits at the pain in her breast, but she holds on for a moment more. "We show them that we are not so easily broken." She releases Ilyna and almost collapses onto the bed once more, heaving a pained brath.
Ilyna fails to notice the turian shifting around in time to react, but the hands on her shoulder makes her snap her attention to her. She watches her carefully when she slumps back on the bed. "Goddess, Oxaris," she says with a slightly raised voice. "I told you to be careful." She casts a glance around for any monitoring readouts; not that she could understand most of the numbers, but she was hoping an alarm
would be raised if she was in danger Ilyna does address her question, however, but the tension and her anxiety for the turian's safety is still present in her voice. "It's because of people like you that the battle wasn't over," she says. "I'm... not one to give up, I've held my barriers to the point of collapse before, but... I was helpless in that pod, and thought that was the fate for all of us."
Oxaris takes a few moments to respond, letting her heart rate calm down. "What I was taught... is that there is always a way out, if you look for it. You-you let them think they have you... that they have broken you. And when they believe the battle is over... you take them out." She turns to look at Ilyna. "It... it was because of people like me that the battle continued. But it was you...who made sure
Ilyna lets out a relieved sigh as the turian still seems to be stable despite her unsafe behavior, but she will have to watch her until either of the doctors wake; or she finds someone else that can take over so she can be there for Li. "You're right," she says. "We have been in terrible situations more times than I would like to admit, but... there was always a way out. This felt different with the
Oxaris shes smirks faintly. "That's... the thing about being a parent. As long as you have a kid, you're... you're not allowed to lose faith," she says softly, looking up at Ilyna. "But you didn't... didn't lose it. The woman I saw fighting back there merely had her faith tested... you didn't lose it... otherwise you wouldn't be here." She coughs and clutches her chest for a moment, wheezing in agony.
Ilyna frowns. "That's..., yeah, I...," she says before letting out a sigh. "I cannot argue with that." She looks up at her, and is about to talk again when she sees the turian cluching her chest. "Aare you okay?" she asks instead. She doesn't wait for an answer, and moves across the room to place a hand on the doctor's shoulder. "I'm sorry to wake you," she says as she gives it a gentle shake, not happy about
Senya lets out a quiet grunt, stirring in her seat. It takes little to wake her, but she remains groggy at first. A long, drawn out sigh as she gets her bearings, eye opening reluctantly. "What is it?" she mumbles under her breath, coming off a bit curt.
Oxaris starts to heave, breathing coming in as a struggle at first. She gasps, gulping down what she can of the filtered air of the ship as her vision starts to blur.
Ilyna casts a glance behind her and her heart sinks as; it's getting worse. There was the risk that she would be waking the doctor unneccesarily, which she would prefer right now. "Oxaris, she-...," she sighs, starting to get impatient. "You need to help her." She takes a step back to not be in her way, but she stays close in case she needs her help.
Senya grimaces as she tries to clear her thoughts and dispel the fog that surrounds her. She takes a swig of the long-since cold coffee left on her desk and rises from her seat, still looking a little groggy as she heads over to Oxaris, but she seems to find her focus when she sees the turian. "Steady. Stay calm." she says, placing a hand on her as she inspects the readouts. She's quick to grab the oxygen appartus
that's been standing by since it was disconnected, strapping it across Oxaris' mouth - while intended to fit multiple species, turians are on the border of what it can manage, and it's not a perfect fit. She also releases a fresh dose of painkillers into the IV.
Oxaris heaves, blood pooling at her mouth. Senya may recognise this as pulmonary embolism, a clot that separates from the vein and travels to the lungs, cutting off the flow of blood. The turian's eyes roll back as she strains with her breathing, the woman refusing to die to a fucking post-surgery complication. She grips the edge of the bed, her heartbeat thundering in her chest as darkness creeps at the
Senya is quick to shift gears from her initial reaction after symptoms and readouts paint a clear picture. This is bad. She had hoped preventative measures would be sufficent. She rushes over to the cabinet, tiredness dispelled for the moment as training takes over. She starts to prepare a syringe. Trombolytic. Risky, but there's not a lot of options at this stage. She's back as soon as her prep is done, holding down
one of the turian's arms as she starts to inject. "Just hold on... I spent too much damn time patching you up for you to punch out now..." she mutters.
Ilyna is standing still, anxiously watching the situation. She's far enough away to not be in the doctor's way. "Goddess," she mutters. If only Ilyna had been quicker to stop the turian's reckless movements, this wouldn't have happened. "Is there anything I can do?" she asks, taking her eyes off the turian to look at the doctor.
Oxaris takes a painfully long time, but... slowly, she starts to calm, her hand unfurling from the edge of the bed. Her heart rate starts to even out, her breathing slowly clearing. The blood stains her mouth and it will take a few more procedures to ensure she will make it back to Aite, but for now, she'll make it.
Senya gets back to work after asking Ilyna to leave for the time being, doing her best to stave off exhaustion.
Ilyna stayed for a few seconds after being asked to leave before making her way back to her quarters. She was still worried for the turian, and anyone that saw her on her way back would notice that she was lost in thought. It stayed at the forefront of her mind as she returned to sit by the bedside.
