Skipping Work #1
Jason remains in his seat during the trip, constantly checking his omni-tool impatiently as if expecting something. Everytime his check turns up a lack of messages, his frustration deepens. What do they stand to gain by refusing negotiations?
Mendez begins checking his shotgun, placing it on his lap and going over each part to keep his mind off of the subtle motion of the Kodiak. "Keep the intel coming." he says to Sioria. "Sounds like we can use whatever we can get."
Sioria nods as she looks out the window. "As soon as I get down and find a perch, I'll make sure to update your huds with what I can." she says, before looking down the scope of her rifle. "As soon as we hit a half... hm, better make that a full click out, I should be good to drop."
There is a hilltop about 0.5km (0.3mi) to the south of the site that offers some elevation, but trees are few, far between, and lacks a thick enough trunk to fully cover a person. The grass looks tall enough to reasonably hide a prone person, however. The shuttle will be in plain sight of the building if they choose to drop her off there.
Jasper gives a shout back. "Felcolus! Ain't no decent drop site nearby that won't leave us exposed! I can mark a hilltop a good distance from our target that'll give ya some good sightlines, but yer gon' hafta hoof it a bit. That work fer' ya?"
Sioria unbuckles herself and stands up. She grabs a handhold from above to keep herself stable as she looks to the cockpit. "I could use the exercise. Get me as close as you can, a little walk never killed anyone." She puts her rifle on her back and faces the shuttle's door, ready to jump out when in Jasper opens the door.
Renala is checking on a device with her omni-tool. It's a small ball of parts held together by tight wires and adhesives, with shield emitters being the only thing protecting it.
The terrain is relatively flat and featureless as they get nearer to the target, which will make a concealed deployment impossible. The nearest forest is about a kilometer (0.6 miles) north of the site, but closing the distance from there on foot will make them easy targets for an enemy sharpshooter. The location itself is 400m (430 yards) from the main road between Linissa and Freedom Falls.
Jasper gives a loud sigh and shakes his head. "On second thought? Don't look like it's gon' matter too much! Ain't nowhere safe for us to come in from. I'm gon' come in low and we'll drop ya off on the hilltop quickly, Felcolus. I'll get the rest a' ya'll as close as I can, then set the shuttle down in the forest 'bout half a mile to the north. Jus' gimme a shout when yer' ready fer' pickup!" he calls back, quickly lowering
Mendez' eyes flutter briefly as the shuttle changes altitudes rapidly, his stomach beginning to grumble. He lifts his helmet onto his head and begins to unharness himself as he prepares to disembark.
The building is a flat-roofed single-story rectangular building taking up the north-western quarter of a fenced-in area, the rest being an empty parking lot. The southern wall that is visible while they drop Felcolus off has three windows. A road leads north-east from it until it connects with the main road.
Jason gives a nod to nobody in particular as he clasps his helmet into place. "Alright people! You know what we're here for! Intel! We're not a death squad! You are to encourage surrender. Don't forget that! Renala? If you can get control of their comms or-... I don't know, the buildings intercom system? Make sure they know that all we want is information. Nobody has to die." he says
Jasper lowers to shuttle's altitude until it's hovering just over the ground above the hilltop. The shuttle door begins to slide open as he shouts back into the cargo compartment. "This is yer' stop, Felcolus! Be careful out there!"
The fence is chain-link and does not block visbility. It's 3m (10ft) tall, but there's nothing to prevent climbing over it.
Jason lifts his forearm as soon as the telltale beeping of a new message is heard. As soon as his omni-tool interface expands above his arm, he navigates to check his new message.
Sioria gives the group one last nod. "Good luck, guys. Smell you later." She hops out of the shuttle and immediately goes into a sprint as she finds the best spot to set up camp. The Turian is quick and nimble on her feet, until she finds a spot; a rock formation on near the crest of the hill. She immediately takes cover behind it, and lowers her visor to begin her duties, watching the
building and reporting anything back. "So far, not very impressive, boss. One floor, which probably means a basement or two." she radios over the comm.
Jason lets out a sigh of relief. "Alright, people! The plan has changed!" he says, making sure to announce it over comms so Sioria can hear it. "Just got word from Irelia. Sounds like we've got someone on the inside here. She's willing to order their people to stand down if we bring down Taro. She seems confident that he's working on something off the records and that just might be the
intel we need regarding V. According to her, they've got a total of six people and warned of rocket launchers on the roof, so keep it low, Jasper. Taro's office is the eastern-most window on the south side of the building. You got eyes on it, Sioria?"
The hilltop will have a good view of the south wall, but as her position is sligtly south-east instead of south, she'll have difficulties seeing what's to the right beyond the windows. There appears to be a salarian in the window, aiming out.
The hatch on the roof (near center of eastern edge) just opened and someone seems to be climbing up through it.
Sioria keys her comm. "Yep, I've got a full visual of the roof. As for the office, stand by." She zooms in with her visor and looks at the eastern-most window on the south side, as ordered. "Office confirmed, I've got one ugly-ass Salarian in visual. Looks like he's expecting us, chief." she says. "Heads up, I don't have the best angle out here, can't see anything on the western sid-"
she interrupts herself. "Roof hatch just opened, I reckon its our rocket boys. I'm on standby for orders." she says as she readies her rifle.
Jason climbs to his feet and grabs for a handhold. "Come in low, Jasper! Right through the fence. If we can put Taro down, Irelia will give us free reign over his terminal. Nobody else needs to die. But if they open fire on us? We're sure as hell not going to take it. With that in mind, you're green to fire when you feel appropriate, Sioria. Use your best discretion. If it looks like
they're going to loose some rockets at us, bring them down. If you have a shot on Taro, take it. Mendez, Vicky. You're going straight for Taro's office. Me and Renala will try and breach through the window west of it and get a foothold for Renala to access their systems in case this becomes an ordeal. If the salarian won't stand down, you know what to do."
Jasper nods to himself. "Awright! Hold onto yer' butts, folks!" he says as he begins to gun it, aiming to tear straight through the chain link fence.
Mendez shuts his eyes, remaining seated with one hand on his shotgun and the other gripping the edge of his seat tightly. The motion of the Kodiak is clearly beginning to get the better of him.
(Windows) The salarian in the windows does not move other than aiming the weapon around. There is no other activity visible from the windows.
Victoria remains seated for the time being, she holsters her knife and draws her Phaeston. "What if he does not talk?"
Sioria keys her comms again. "Jason, he's gunning for the shuttle. I have him in my sights." Sioria says as she zeroes in her crosshairs, directly on the Turian's center of mass.
Jason looks to Vicky, sucking in a deep breath as he shakes his head. "I don't think talking is an option for Taro. I get the impression he'll fight to the end. You put him down." he says. He gives a sidelong glance to Uvena. "You're with Vicky. Taking Taro's office is the objective right now. Me and Renala will just be working to get control of their systems. You must get a foothold
in there. If Irelia is to be trusted, the others will stand down as soon as Taro is taken out of the fight. Minimum fatalities is the best we can hope for right now."
Renala nods. "Got it," she says, her grip on the handhold tighetning at the mention of a rocket launcher pointed their way.
Sioria "Copy that. Firing on rocket boy." she says before double checking her aim, then firing at the rocket launcher toting Turian. Waiting for him to fire was just a bad time waiting to happen. "You had your chance, you son of a bitch..."
(Roof) The turian fires of a ML-77 missile just as the shot connects, but it travels skyward and explodes a few hundred yards in the air. The turian falls over backwards and doesn't seem to be getting up at first, but his status is unclear. Another turian emerges from the hatch.
(Parking lot) The fence is no match for the shuttle ramming it, but the impact will be felt as a sudden jolt by the people inside.
Victoria manages to remain in her seat barely, as she grabs a hold of her chair with a free hand. "Less crashing and more flying."
Mendez visibly winces as the shuttle rams through the fence. For a moment, it almost looks like he might puke, but the large man is able to reign it in. Once they're through the worst of it he climbs to his feet, taking a handhold near the rest of them.
Jasper continues through the parking lot, swerving the Kodiak and angling the broadside towards the windows so the shuttle inhabitants can exit through the opposite door and keep the Kodiak between them and the building's windows. "Yer' good ta' go!" he calls out as the shuttle door slides open. "Keep yer' heads down! I'll stay around to provide cover with the shuttle til' yer' ready to advance on the building!"
Uvena nods. "I see," she says just before the shuttle breaks the fence and she loses her grip on the handhold. She manages to stand upright, but she doesn't manage to grip it again while he swerves around. "Who's taking point?"
Sioria pulls back the bolt on her rifle and lets the heat dissipate before preparing another shot. She zeroes in on the Salarian in the window now. Jason did say if she had the shot, she should take it. "Night night." she says, before squeezing the trigger and firing at him.
Mendez pushes the others aside, gripping his shotgun tightly in his free hand. "If it means getting out of this death trap first, I'll take point." he announces, clearly eager to get away from all the rocking and swaying. He hops out of the shuttle and takes cover up against the tail of it.
Jason drops out of the shuttle after Mendez, unholstering his Revenant from his back as he drops into a crouch. "What's the status on the rooftop shooter, Sioria? Should we be worried about our impending explosion?" He gives a quick look over his machine gun, ensuring the thermal clip is seated properly. A certain ease comes over him now that they're in the thick of it, nerves giving
(Window) This should have been a hit, but the salarian only flickers as small debris is kicked off the wall behind him. He remain exactly where he is. The other windows are still clear, and Sioria has no visual on doors leading from the rooms beyond any of the windows.
(Parking Lot) The turian on the roof runs over to the southern edge, above the window, and fires a ML-77 missile towards the front of the shuttle.
Sioria growls as the shot sails through the hologram. Then she looks back up to the roof. "Shit!" she says. "Take cover, guys!" She quickly reloads the thermal clip before taking the shot. "First shooter was taken out, second decided to be a hero!"
Uvena hurries out of the shuttle at the sound of the nearby explosion, taking cover behind where Mendez is.
Victoria rushes out of the shuttle right behind Mendez and the others. Her phaeston held tightly in her hands.
Jasper braces himself as the missile makes contact, hoping the Kodiak's shielding is strong enough to take it. "Shit! That's a hit!"
Jason hunkers down instinctively as the explosion rings out. "Fuck! Take him out! The shuttle can't take that sort of heat!"
Mendez is jostled from his cover as the missile hits the shuttle, which encourages him to swing out of cover and put a few rounds into the window. As the hologram flickers, he swings back into cover. "Salarian in the window is a decoy. We ready to move up?"
(Roof) The shot connects, but it doesn't bring him down. He manages to fire off another missile that arches towards the front of the shuttle.
(Windows) An armored figure appears for a second in the middle window on the south wall, which is most likely not enough time for the sniper to react, aim and fire.
Jasper cusses under his breath as a second explosion sounds out. "That's it for me, Jason! Ya'll are gon' hafta get up there now cuz another hit like that and this baby is gon' be a scrap heap!" he says over comms as his hands dance across the holographic interface, struggling to keep the shuttle steady. "Move now!"
Sioria growls once again. "Bastard's still up!" she says over the comms before reloading a shot. "Shit, heads down! Middle window, armoured prick!" Sioria barks as she fires a second shot into the rocket Turian
Mendez swings back out as soon as Uvena joins him near the tail, shotgun raised as he charges towards the window with the fake salarian.
Jason steps out from the nose of the shuttle once Jasper voices his concern. "Moving up! On me, Renala!" he calls out, machine gun shoulders as he keeps his weapon leveled at the window they're approaching, looking for signs of the 'armored prick' mentioned by Sioria.
Renala nods and follows Jason towards the window, keeping him between her and the window so there's no need for her to raise her weapon yet.
Victoria makes a dash to the wall, she focuses on running to the wall. She rushes towards the window closes to the East side, she is running at full speed so she can vault into building.
(Windows) The decoy is still in there. All windows are large enough to vault into, though Mendez might want to watch his head. The other windows are still clear. There's a closed door almost opposite the windows, but a little to the right on both windows. They're not locked.
Jasper takes off the moment the last of the Redrockers have left the side of the shuttle, remaining low and heading right back through the hole they rammed through the gate. "Get to cover!" he announces over comms, "I'll be back to pick ya'll up as soon as ya give me the all clear."
Mendez slams a hand onto the windowframe, hoisting his large frame through the window frame. As he lands on the other side, he swings his shotgun to the right, aiming to the corner on his flank with the assumption that Uvena will cover his left upon her entry. He steps towards the corner to clear the window so the others can enter.
Sioria keys her comms. "Second rocket guy is down, guys." she announces. "I can't cover you as well on the inside. Good luck. I'll keep an eye out for any reinforcements from my side."
Jason continues towards the middle window until just outside of it and presses against the wall beside it. "Breaking the glass!" he announces to Renala as he swings the stock of his Revenant against the window.
(Taro's Office) Mendez' entry is immediately answered by a barrage of Katana shots the corner he aims at. The shooter is a crouched salarian hiding behind a desk standing perpendicular to the right wall. A chair is on the opposite right corner. There is a terminal on the desk.
(Middle Office) There is no reaction from inside the room, nor is anyone visible from the door. It has a single desk in the middle of the wall to the right.
Uvena waits for Mendez to move away from the window before entering to assist him. She raises her weapon half-way.
Victoria stacks up on the other side of the window to Uvena. She tries to see if it is possible for her to get an angle on the shooter.
Mendez' shields flicker as the shots make contact and he instantly returns fire, looking for any cover available. If there is none, he'll just commit to the 'brute force' approach and send more rounds the salarian's way, hoping his team's combined gunfire will be enough to bring the salarian down before his shields are shredded completely. "Taking fire from a salarian!"
Jason gives Renala a nod before gripping the window frame with one hand, Revenant held tightly in the other, and hops into the room. He snaps his machine gun up and begins scanning for threats as soon as he's inside and waits for Renala to join up with him.
Sioria continues to watch from the outside, specifically for outside reinforcements or enemies dumb enough to go to the roof, of show thier faces in windows.
Uvena vaults into the room and opens fire towards the salarian, as well. Her shields stand up to the shotgun spreads that reach her. She steps forward to let Victoria enter behind her.
(Taro's Office) Victoria does not have a shot on him. There is also no solid cover on offer in this room, but the combined fire does bring his shield down and a shotgun spread to his head and neck finishes him off when there's just two more shots left on his clip.
(Other Office) The room is clear. There is an unlocked door on the opposite wall. The desk has a terminal on it, but it has several bullet holes on it and it is not showing any signs of being switched on.
Mendez activates comms, taking a few deep breaths as his adreneline calms down. "Salarian is down. If it was Taro, then that should mean we're done here, right?"
Jason glances over to Renala briefly as he hears Mendez. Keeping his Revenant leveled on the door, he takes a defensive position to keep line of sight on it. "See if you can activate any sort of intercom system or-... comms.... Something to broadcast a message. Let them know that Taro is dead and we're not interested in killing anyone else. All we want is information and we'll be on
Victoria vaults into the room once Uvena had moved to let her enter. She curses under her breath as she did not have a chance to kill the bastard.
Renala nods and enables her omni-tool. "Cover me," she says while tapping away at the omni-tool. "There's a camera I can access, but that's about it," she says. "If there's a network here, they must have taken it down, or at least shut off all attached wireless devices." She taps another time on her omni-tool, bringing up a video feed on screen. "The camera is in a corridor. Appears clear. It's next to the open hatch. Three doors
Jason sighs but nods. "Alright. Take over door duty. Only option is to try and get in touch with Irelia if we're going to avoid any more bloodshed." he says, stepping back and lowering his Revenant as he brings up his omni-tool interface. As he hears the voice calling for Taro, he lowers his arm, snapping his Revenant back up. "Taro is dead!" he shouts, "We have no intentions of hurting
anyone else! We're just here for information! Drop your weapons and there's no reason we can't work this out without killing one another."
Mendez raises his shotgun at the door as he hears the voice outside, but remains in place. He listens silently as Jason speaks up.
Victoria aims at the door as she hears the voice, she moves into position to flank anyone that enters into the room.
(Inside) There's some indistinguishible talking followed by a door opening and footsteps in the hallway. "Last one is joining us in here," a female voice shouts back. "We'll lock ourselves in here until you're gone." Judging by the direction of the sound, the shouting woman is in a room opposite the one where Jason and Renala.
Jason sighs, glancing towards the floor momentarily. She's keeping her side of the deal. "Two of your people were wounded on the roof. I'm not sure if they're dead, but if you leave your weapons behind, we'll let one of you move to provide assistance to them. No weapons." he repeats.
Mendez eases up as he hears the response. "Sounds like they're standing down." he says with a glance at the other two.
Victoria nods and opens the door "Now we need information." She plainly states as she looks outside of the door.
Renala nods. "There's an asari in the hallway," she says over comms. "She just dropped her gun and went for the ladder."
(Hallway) The characteristic sound of a gun hitting the floor can be heard, followed by footsteps getting closer to the area outside Taro's office. An asari is gripping the rungs of the ladder by the time the door opens. She stops and looks towards the nearby doorway. "Information on what?" she asks. She is in a green suit of armor, and a helmet obscures her face. She is the only one in the hallway.
Jason moves towards the door, slapping a gauntleted hand against the panel to open it. "They're standing down, Sioria." he informs over comms, "One is coming to the roof to check if either of the two you put down survived and possibly provide medical assistance. Keep an eye on them. If they try anything, you know what to do." He glances back to Renala and nods towards the door he's at,
Renala nods and disables her omni-tool. She stands up and follows after Jason into the hallway. She draws her Locust, and keeps it at the ready.
Uvena clenches her fist upon seeing the merc through the doorway, and a biotic shimmer forms around her. She doesn't do anything, though.
"Information about a missing person that your people seem to be connected to." She stops for a moment "Her name is Va'ynna Atana. Do you have any Batarians under your employment?"
She lets go of the rung with one hand and points at the middle door on the other wall in the hallway. It is locked. "Two of them. One's in there, and the other one has failed to report in." She doesn't wait around for a follow up question before continuing on her way up to the roof. Once she's there, she runs over to the first turian Sioria shot down. There is no one else in the hallway.
