Skipping Work #4
Jason scowls at Vicky, a mix of disbelief at her actions and frustration on his face. His gaze slowly turns to the asari on the ground and he crouches down beside her, resting his forearms against his knees as he holds his Phalanx. "What do these people know about her?" he asks, his voice less harsh now that she's writhing in pain on the ground. "Does 'Sala Piros' know her name? Where
Mendez enters the room and the slightest of frowns crosses his face as he sees the state Va'ynna is in. He quickly crosses the room and drops to a knee, tossing the thick blanket around her. "Here. This will keep you warm." he says, glancing over to Uvena, "Any idea where her clothes are?"
Victoria looks at Jason when she spots his look "They have her in a freezing cold room in her underwear. She is lucky I am not taking her throat out." She says in a tone filled with hate.
Uvena shakes her head. "I didn't find them in this building." she says. "Is the outside clear enough to move her to the shuttle?"
Va'ynna is still shivering, but she does nod to Mendez. "Threw them out of... the car," she says, her voice also shaky. "Said it was in case there were... trackers in them. Don't... know where."
Jason 's frown deepens. Not good. He sighs and stands back up, staring at the asari for a moment before looking to Victoria. "Do what you have to do." he says, stepping over to her. "But I suggest you take a moment here to think about the type of person you believe V deserves to be with." he adds pointedly, his gaze briefly glancing down at the helpless, pained asari. She deserved no
sympathy, but this fight was over. "We already won. Causing her more pain does nothing to help V. Stooping down to her level and willingly turning yourself into a monster? It's just going to take a little piece of you with her. And then she's already won." He places a gauntlet on Victoria's shoulder, giving it a slight, sympathetic squeeze as he holds eye contact from behind his helmet,
Mendez gives a shake of his head. "I'm not sure-... Just stay here a moment, I'll check." he says, climbing back to his feet with a grunt and heading back towards the front door just in time to catch the tail end of Jason's speech to Victoria.
Sioria is still sitting in her tree, watching. A small shiver travels down her spine as the cold starts setting into her suit's insulation.
Victoria puts her pistol and knife away, she picks up her helmet and just shakes her head at the asari. "You deal with her then. I am going to make sure that Vay is fine." She walks away from the injured asari and begins to make her way back to Va'ynna.
Jason reaches out and grabs Vicky by the shoulder, giving a shake of his head. "You wanted the responsibility of dealing with her. Now you've got it." he says harshly. "Just don't forget... You literally just walked out on V when she needed you just so you could hurt this woman. Is that the person you want to be? Think about it..." he says before pushing past her. Once inside, he
Renala gets on the comms. "This car is rented from that same asshole that hired them," she says. "None of Atana's belongings are in here, or any useful things at all for that matter."
Victoria wanted to head butt Jason right now, but she stopped herself from doing so. She draws her predator and turns back to the injured asari, aiming the weapon at her head. "Fuck you." She pulls the trigger.
(Outside) She looks up at Victoria with a terrified expression. "No! Don't!" She rolls out of the side, barely avoiding the headshot as it strikes the ground besie her. "I did what you told me!"
Jason sighs at the sound of gunfire behind him as he continues into the room Va'ynna is in. "Get ready to get out of here." he announces over comms before removing his helmet and tucking it under his arm, Phalanx holstered back on his thigh. He props up a lopsided smile for Va'ynna's sake as he spots her. "Hey V..." he says softly, "...Sorry it took so long."
Va'ynna is still seated in the corner, shivering. The blanket does its job, but it doesn't cover her entirely and she is still sitting on a floor that's losing its tempearture. She looks up at Jason. "I was... so scared that you wouldn't find me."
Uvena moves her hands behind her back and under her knees, preparing to carry her. "Is it safe to move her to the shuttle?"
Victoria picks the asari up by the scruff of her shirt "Tell me why I should let you live then? What is to stop you from doing this again?" She yells at the asari with hate.
Sioria radios in. "Hey guys... Starting to get cold up here. Gonna start making my way to you guys for exfil." she says. "Looks like its all but over." She begins climbing down.
Jason crouches down beside Va'ynna, feigning offense as he frowns. "Wha-... me!? Not find you!? Come on! I'm the best there is, V. You should know that by now." he teases. He glances over to Uvena as she begins to lift Va'ynna up, standing with her. "It is. Just... Let's take her through the window. I'm not sure it's going to be a very pretty sight out front..." His smile wavers, but
he props it back up for Va'ynna's sake, giving her a quick wink as he continues his conversation with her like it never stopped, "Besides... I had a lot of people helping me who really care about you. Did you think Vicky, your mom or I would stop looking?" he snorts, "Shit, we would've tracked these fuckers to the ends of the galaxy, V." He turns around, leading the way out of the room
Mendez remains in the doorway, gaze towards the ground as he waits to see how Victoria will handle the asari.
Jasper responds to Sioria over comms. "You ain't gotta come to us if ya don't think ya need the cardio. I can come pick ya up! Jus' waitin' fer' everyone to load up first is all."
(Outside) "Listen to him!" she says, sounding panicked. "I cooperated with your people, told you all I know. Is Redrock Agency's reputation a lie?"
Sioria radios back to Jasper. "The walk will help me warm up. I'll be back with the others in ten-" snap! "Woahshit!" a branch under her foot snaps and leaves her hanging. She tries to pull herself up... snap! With a dull thump, she lands on the forest ground three meters down, frozen for a moment until spreading out with a hiss. "Owie..." She keys her com again. "Minutes." She slowly
Jasper furrows his brow as Sioria's message is interrupted before picking back up. "You-... uhhh.... you alright out there?"
Va'ynna is quiet for a few seconds until she shakes her head. "No, but... not even I know where this is," she says. "I'm... cold, please.... I want to go home."
Uvena nods, a frown crossing her expression at Jason's implication. She starts walking out of the building, taking the route via the bedroom. She catches a glimpse of Victoria outside through the tiny hole in the window barricade.
Sioria keys her com as she jogs. "Yeah, I'm good." she says, panting slightly. "Lets just say the trees out here aren't as strong as I thought, or I need to stop eating junk food." she disengages her com as she sees the clearing up ahead.
Victoria holsters her pistol, and begins to apply medi-gel to the asari. "If I ever see you again. I won't be flying Redrock's colours, I don't care who will be watching. I will be the worse thing you ever saw." She stares the asari in the eyes "Don't ever mess with Redrock or it's people, this will be your last warning because I don't like giving people a third chance."
Jason continues to lead back towards the window he entered from, making sure to block Va'ynna's line of sight to the two bodies as best as he can. "Shuttle should be nice and warm." he says, "It's right outside, alright V? We'll get you inside and you'll feel a lot better."
(Outside) The asari nods. "You never stop wearing the colors," she says, "but... fuck, I'll make sure to keep a light year between us."
Va'ynna gives a weak nod, raising a brow as Jason keeps walking around her. "What... did those people want with me?" she asks.
"Good." She stand up and gives a final look at the asari "Remember my words, or else it will not be pretty." She then begins to walk towards the shuttle.
Uvena carefully steps out of the window Jason breached. "Is Dr. Halisi in her office?" she asks. "I'll feel a lot better if she gets medical attention there." She continues towards the shuttle.
Mendez sighs as he listens in on the conversation between Victoria and the asari, pulling his sidearm free from his thigh and steps outside. "Redrock Agency's reputation is one of protecting people. Don't try and use it as a shield to spare your own miserable life." he says coldly, "Ending your life? Making sure you can't hurt anyone else? That would be upholding Redrock's reputation." He presses the pistol to the side of
the asari's head and hovers his finger over the trigger. "Your company is dismantled. You lost. I suggest you decide against making this personal. Your people fired the first shot. We fired the last. Let it die there or we will come back for you." he continues, no emotion in his voice, just sheer ice as he reholsters his pistol. "And next time there won't be any more talking." He starts towards the shuttle a few
(Outside) The asari gets to her feet and hurries towards the sky-car without saying a word, her movement stiff and uneven. She stumbles a few times on her way, but always gets to her feet.
Sioria finally comes into the clearing and jogs towards the shuttle. "Hey! We win? Good! Lets get out of here." She hops into the shuttle before taking a seat with a light, pained hiss. "That's gonna hurt in the morning..."
Jason climbs through the window behind Uvena. "I'll send a message her way and make sure V gets a once-over." he says before addressing Va'ynna's question. "We're still trying to figure that out-.." he says, deciding it's best to leave out the details for now, "...But all that matters is we stopped them. We're going to keep looking into this, but you don't need to worry about that,
Jasper greets Sioria with a nod. "Sure sounds like we did... Jus' waitin' fer' everyone to get back. You gon' be alright? Sounded like ya took quite a spill."
Sioria heads to the cockpit and leans against the doorframe, trying to look non chalant. "I'll be fine." she says. "Nothing broken. Probably a bruise here and there, but nothing I can't walk off." She says with a smile, even if her helmet is on. "But hey, thanks for the concern. I appreciate it." The turian gives the pilot a big ol' thumbs up.
Uvena helps her to a seat very far into the shuttle. "And I'm not letting you walk to work alone until we know for sure it's safe," she says. She takes the seat beside her daughter.
Jason climbs in behind Uvena and Va'ynna, grabbing a handhold and turning to face out towards Victoria and Mendez. "We're going to keep you safe, V. You have my word on that, alright? I'm-... I'm sorry this happened. It shouldn't have..." His gaze moves past Victoria to the limping asari before settling back on the pirate. He gives her a small nod. "Let's get out of this shit hole."
Victoria takes off her helmet and once close to the asari wraps her arms loosely around the asari. "I'm sorry, I should have walked you to work." She then looks at Jason "I missed." Is all she says to him.
Renala meets up with the stumbling asari and helps her the last quarter of the way to the car. She did not return her weapon or omni-tool, though. Renala then starts running towards the shuttle.
Va'ynna wraps an arm loosely around Victoria, her movements slow. "You... you couldn't have... predicted this," she mutters. She tilts her head at what she said to Jason.
Mendez gives a glance back towards the asari before climbing into the shuttle, causing it to list slightly as he offsets the balance momentarily. Once onboard, he retakes his previous seat and begins harnessing himself in.
Renala slows down when she approaches the shuttle, and she retakes her previous seat without a word.
Jasper shuts the doors as soon as everyone is onboard, giving Sioria another nod as he retakes his seat, "Might wanna take a seat, let yer' keester rest a bit." he says as he shuts the shuttle doors and starts the Kodiak up. "Time to go home, folks!" he announces.
Sioria smiles at Jason with a nod. "Keester. You humans have some really weird words." she says with a light chuckle as she heads into the main compartment and takes a seat, again with a light hiss. "Lets go home."
Jason releases his grip on the handholds and takes a seat across from Va'ynna, setting his helmet down beside him. "Well.... This has been quite a day." he sighs, looking Va'ynna over, "You okay, V?" he asks sincerely.
Va'ynna nods. "I... I am cold," she says, "but... it's better than... that." She glances at the shuttle door.
Jason gives a glance over to Renala. "Did you get everything you could off of them...?" he asks, again staying away from any details for Va'ynna's sake. "I want you to go through everything we've found once we're back."
Sioria tries to get comfy, but finds it quite hard. She looks over at Va'ynna and nods at her, as if to say 'glad to have you back'. Then she looks around. "So that's Avoren disbanned now? What happend to the chick that helped us?"
Victoria looks to Jason as he speaks, wondering if they did get everything that had to figure this out.
Renala nods. "I searched the mercs and the car, but I only found their omni-tools if we're not counting the asari's gun," she says. "It's possible a thorough search of the place could turn up more, but I think getting her home is much more important right now."
Jason gives a nod in turn, his gaze resting back on Va'ynna. "Can't disagree with you there." he says with a sigh. "Just... See what you can get off the omni-tools. Sounded like there was some contact info we're going to want to look into at the very least..."
Renala gives a nod. "I'll start on it when I'm back in my office," she says. "Is there a specific contact I should be looking for?"
Mendez remains silent, pleased to be done with all the fighting with Va'ynna safely under their protection again.
Well we'll go through whatever she has... But specifically the one she mentioned. Sala Piros. See what you can dig up on the name, too.
Sioria sits back. She knows her answer will come out in time, its not pressing. However, there is a more pressing matter. "So... who's got first round?"
They're not far from Freedom Falls, so the trip won't take more than 5 minutes including lift off and landing.
Jason gives a glance over to Sioria after addressing Renala's question. "She convinced her people to stand down with minimal bloodshed. I gave her a pass for now. We'll keep a close eye on what they're doing, though. I'm not confident that they'll be able to keep their shit together, but I'm also not ready to just go around killing a bunch of people just because I'm not sure we can
trust them. We need to be better than the thugs and shitbags that make a bad name for the rest of us in this profession. It's important that we make a stand against that sort of shit. Slaughtering them indiscriminantly doesn't further that agenda. Even if this might come back to bite us in the ass..." he says with a sigh, "...We just make sure we're better and more well prepared than them
Sioria nods slowly as Jason talks. "Hey, I never said we should kill her, I was just curious. She helped big time, she's good in my books." she says, crossing her arms. "If whatever's left of them does collapse, there's gonna be a few people looking for new contracts. That's an expansion opportunity if I ever saw one."
Renala nods. "Sala Piros, noted," she says. "I'll see what I can dig up, but I won't make any promises."
Va'ynna looks at the floor, still shivering a bit. She is listening to the conversation around her, though.
I'm not asking for promises. Just do what you can. Any information you drum up is more than we had ten minutes ago.
Victoria is still looking at Va'ynna, happy to have her back but sad to see her like this "We will be back home soon, sweetie."
Va'ynna gives a slow nod. "What if... what if they come for me again?" she asks. "I... I can't... ask you to look after me all day and night."
Jason gives a deep frown at the thought. "They won't, V. They tried. They failed. Most of them are-...." he pauses, "...Most of them won't be coming after anyone ever again. They've barely got enough people to keep their company afloat. They're not dumb enough to try again. And if they are, we'll stop them." He leans forward, resting his forearms on his knees as he holds eye contact
"Whenever I am not there, your mother will look out for you. Jason will look out for you." She kneels down in front of the asari "Until we figured this out, I am staying close to you."
Va'ynna smiles slightly. "I.... Thank you," she says. "I can... ask for a few days off and stay in... your office building, if that's fine."
Jason 's smirk returns and he nods. "Of course, V. Hell, we'll rent some vids. Get some pizza. It'll be a party." he jokes. His gaze drifts over to Sioria and he gives a nod to her, "Thanks for helping, Sioria. I know this was all pretty sudden and you probably had other plans for your day, but I appreciate it. It means a lot to me."
Sioria gives a thumbs up. "No problem, chief. Nothing's more important than getting our own back." she says. "Didn't have any plans anyway." Then she blinks and shakes her head with a chuckle. "Oh boy, Ehanis is gonna rip me a new one when she finds out I didn't try bring her in on this..."
Renala chuckles. "That would have been difficult without T'Rea present to greenlight it," she says. "And well, she hasn't set foot in the office since the day after she came back from that expedition."
Sioria shrugs a little a she sits back once again. "Yeah, I hope she sees it that way. Might be one of those 'its the thought that counts' situations." She can't help but chuckle. "I guess we'll find out."
Va'ynna nods, the small smile staying while Jason speaks. "I... should at least tell D'Inea I'm... back," she says before reaching for her pockets. "Um, did you find my omni-tool?"
Jason gives a small shake of his head, wincing apologetically. "Not unless it was on one of them or in the skycar..." he glances to Renala for confirmation, "...I didn't see much around and sticking around didn't seem like a safe plan. I'm sorry, V..."
Victoria gives a nod to Va'ynna and looks at her with a frown "I found it. It was... in pieces." She decided it was best to hide the fact she accidentally step on it.
Mendez speaks up. "Once we drop her off, Jasper can bring me back. I'll do a thorough search now that we've cleared the place and see if I can find anything."
Renala shakes her head. "No, those were all in one piece," she says, "and seems to belong to the mercs."
Uvena frowns. "It looks like someone came around later to pick it up," she says. "If it was what they threw part the window in the security footage."
Jasper chimes in, "I ain't got no problem with that. Might wanna call in a lil backup, though. Jus' in case anyone else decides to show up. Ya never know."
Jason nods a couple times. "I'll send someone else with you. For now let's just get her somewhere warm and get her some clothes." he says. "The rest can wait."
Va'ynna sighs and looks at the floor. "Oh," she says, looking both dissapointed and ashameed of being disappointed. "It's.... I've had that omni-tool for a long time, and... there's.... I would like to have it back."
Victoria gives a nod "Well, I only found single piece of it that was broken. So the rest of it might still be there."
The Kodiak glides over the town of Freedom Falls, heading straight for Redrock Agency. It's not long before they're slowly descending as the hangar bay doors slide open. Once just above the ground, Jasper pilots Betsy inside and touches down.
Jasper gives a call to the others as the shuttle doors open up. "Alright, hope that was 'nuff excitement for one day."
Jason climbs to his feet as the shuttle sets down, giving a glance to Uvena and Victoria. "I can have Jasper take you by her place on his way to take Mendez back. Maybe you can pack up some stuff for her if she's going to be staying here for a few days...?" he asks.
Sioria disembarks the shuttle and stretches a little, followed by a small grunt as she rubs her lower back. "Damn..." She takes a deep breath and turns around. "So, what's next?"
Uvena nods. "That's not a bad idea," she says, retracting her hand over Va'ynna's shoulders. "It's up to you if you want to come with me, Victoria."
Victoria shakes her head "I will stay with her. Give me the chance to get out of this armor and make sure she is alright." She looks to Va'ynna and gives a smile.
Uvena stares at her for a few seconds. "I think you should come with me," she says, although the tone hints at it being more than a suggestion.
Victoria gives a nod to Uvena "Oh, um... alright then, I shall come with you." Vicky has a strange reason that she is going to be in some type of trouble.
Va'ynna starts getting to her feet, but her movements are slow and labored. She raises an eyebrow at the two at her sides, but doesn't say anything.
Jason nods to Uvena, moving to assist Va'ynna by offering her a shoulder. "Let's get you up to the rec room." he says, "They'll be back soon with some fresh clothes for you." he offers with a smile. He glances in Sioria's direction and gives a slight shrug. "For now we just let Renala do her thing and see what she can dig up. You're free to get back to your life in the meantime. I might
Sioria gives a double thumbs up. "Cool." she says. "Since I have the night off... anyone wanna get the first round?" she asks around.
Uvena looks up at Jason. "She needs a medical checkup, Wolfe," she says. "Is the doctor in her office?"
Renala stands up. "I'll have to pass, Felcolus," she says. "I've got work to do." She walks out of the shuttle starts walking towards the hallway.
Jason gives a shake of his head. "She doesn't usually stick around the office if she's not directly working on something. I'm going to get her up to the rec room and we'll have the doctor look her over as soon as she gets here." he explains, "She'll be here as soon as she can." Upon hearing Sioria's suggestion, he snorts and gives a shake of his head, "Kind of got a lot on my plate
right now, Sioria. I'm gonna have to pass up this drinking outing." He frowns, muttering to himself, "...Never thought I'd hear myself say that..."
Sioria lets her arms flop to her sides. "Dang... One of the disadvantages of being a grunt around here." She looks to Mendez and Jasper. "What about you two?" Then she opens her omnitool. "Whatever the case, I ain't celebrating a job well done alone."
Sioria blinks. "Oh, right. Tool searching." she sighs a little. "Doubt you'll need the extra eyes, but I'm aparently not doing anything else. Need a hand?"
Jason nods to Sioria. "Go ahead and help him. Means I don't need to call Jattic up." he says, glancing to Va'ynna expectantly as she still hasn't accepted his help.
Sioria nods and heads back into the shuttle. "I guess I shouldn't be drinking at midday..." she mutters. "At least it'll save me getting weird looks, huh."
Jason begins to lead Va'ynna out of the shuttle, helping her down to the hangar floor before starting towards the door. "Keep me updated on whatever you two find!" he calls back.
Va'ynna is led by Jason towards the door, though she keeps a slow pace. "What... did Victoria do?" she asks once they're some distance away from the shuttle door.
Jason looks at the asari beside him, furrowing his brow. "What do you mean...?" he asks, "...She did everything she could to help find you."
Jason gives Va'ynna a pat on the back, thinking better than discussing his issue with Victoria at the present time. It's not for her ears anyway. He leads her out of the hangar.
Jasper shuts the shuttle door once Jason, Renala and Va'ynna are out. "Awright, folks. We'll drop you an' Victoria off-..." he says, glancing back towards Uvena from the cockpit, "Then get you two back down at that shack ta' see whatcha can find. We can swing back and pick you two ladies back up on our way back." he offers.
Uvena nods. "Sounds good," she says, watching out the viewport as Jason escorts Va'ynna out of the hangar.
Va'ynna gives a tiny smile. "I... could use something warm to drink," she says. "I still feel... cold." The shivering is still there, but at a much lesser degree than when they found her.
Jason 's smirk returns as he leads her towards the staircase. "Welllll as it so happens, we've got plenty of coffee and hot cocoa upstairs." he says. "Should warm you right up. Take your pick."
