Jason sets his omni-tool on the table beside his bed and stands up, wearing only a pair of shorts and a large white bandage wrapped around his abdomen. He makes his way over to the dresser and pulls open the drawers. After pulling out a bloodied bag, he slowly begins slipping his damaged undersuit.
#Hospital – August 24, 2014
Halisi finds herself standing behind Jason with crossed arms. She lets out a mock cough to make him aware of her presence.
Jason shakes his head and continues to pull his undersuit on. "I don't wanna hear it." he mutters, not even bothering to turn around as he already knows exactly who it is, "Linda put out a request for all Redrock employees to return to the agency." he says, moving on to the next drawer. It has a small keypad on it. Jason begins poking at it until it unlocks and he pulls the drawer out, "She said to come armed. And now a friend says she saw a bright flash coming from the agency..." He finally glances back at Halisi, "I need to be there."
Halisi shakes her head. "You're not going to do any good going out there. You can't fight, and it's going to take you too long to get there anyway. All you'd do is risk tearing up your wounds."
Jason nods a couple times, clearly not listening. "Uh huh... Right..." he says as he begins pulling the pieces of his hardsuit out of the drawer and equipping them. A large section is cut away from where Halisi field-treated him. "Don't tear open my wounds, gotcha..."
Halisi moves up to Jason and puts a hand on his arm, trying to lower it. "You're not going out there. Doctor's orders."
Jason stares at Halisi's hand for a moment before turning his gaze to her, looking her dead in the eyes. "Yes. I. Am." he says through gritted teeth, "Linda might be in danger, so I suggest you move your hand, Doc."
Halisi returns his stare. "What are you going to do? The Agency is on the other side of town, and more importantly, you're not ready to be released yet."
Jason jerks his arm away and continues equipping his gear. "Got a ride on the way." he says bluntly, "As for my release? I couldn't give a shit less. This is a hospital, not a prison. You can't keep me here."
Ilyna arrives by Sky-car just outside the front door, for she was already on her way towards the agency when she first contacted Jason. She starts making her way inside. She's dressed just like earlier today when she visited. Ilyna seems less tired, too.
Halisi furrows her eyebrows. "I really don't think you-..." She stops as her omni-tool beeps, and she takes it out. "Looks like they're here." She says before jogging off towards the entrance.
Jason turns towards the doctor. "They-...? Wait, who!?" he calls out as Ilyna comes into view. He glances past the asari for a moment before settling his gaze on her. "What's going on, Ilyna?" he asks as he begins putting on his boots, the last of his equipment, "Nobody is telling me anything."
Ilyna almost runs into Halisi on her way in, giving a quick "Sorry" before proceeding in. "I don't know," she says. "But the taxi I took is still waiting outside. Are you sure you're well enough for this?"
Halisi shouts "No he's not!" before grabbing a stretcher together with a nurse and heading outside, looking around for the new arrival.
Jason slides the second drawer shut and inputs the code for the bottom drawer. "I'm fine." he says, although the pain shooting through his side says otherwise and he instinctively places his hand over it. With a sigh, he looks up at Ilyna and repeats himself, "I'm fine, Ilyna. I have to make sure Linda's alright." He reaches into the open drawer, pulls out his Revenant and holsters it on his back.
Ilyna steps towards him, taking his word over the unfamiliar doctor's. "Do you need any help?" she offers.
Mendez removes his own harness before working on the salarian's. Once free, Mendez lifts Jelvan as if he were light as a feather and hops out of the shuttle. He begins marching towards the hospital doors.
Leah unharnesses herself as well and moves over to Renala's side. "You alright, Renala?" she asks, "Need a hand?"
Renala remains seated, not wishing to be in the way medical personnel coming to get the salarian. She seems a little paler, but feels no pain. "I'm fine," she says.
Mendez lays the salarian down on the stretcher and takes a step back. "Was on the wrong end of an explosion. He was hit with a bit of debris, seems to be breathing, though. Patched him up with some medi-gel as best as I could."
Jason shakes his head and grabs hold of the top of the dresser to pull himself back to his feet. "No, let's just get moving. Can't waste anymore time."
Halisi nods and they immediately carries him into the hospital, disappearing into an emergency treatment room.
Jelvan is still unconcious, but he's breathing. He has a lot of medi-gel covered scraches all over his back, hands and legs. There's one worryingly large wound where the rocket impacted, which may not be easy to treat.
Mendez puts his hands on his hips and watches as the stretcher is carted off. After a moment, he makes his way back over to the shuttle, but remains outside. He reaches in, offering a hand to Renala. "You're up, princess. Let's get you in there."
Jason follows behind Ilyna, his hand settled against his side. "Where are we parked?" he asks as they move down the hall.
Jason gives a quick nod and continues to follow Ilyna. "You said you saw a bright flash?" he asks, the worry obvious in his voice, "What did it look like?"
Ilyna ponders it for a few seconds. "I think ships make that kind of explosion," she says. "I'm not sure." She proceeds through the lobby and opens the main entrance.
Mendez assists Renala out of the shuttle and begins to walk towards the hospital entrance beside her. "How you holding up?"
Jason grits his teeth as another sharp pain shoots through his side. "That doesn't sound good. She better be alright..." he sighs as he steps through the front door. After a couple steps, he stops walking entirely and narrows his eyes on the pair walking towards him. He glances beyond them to the shuttle. "Mendez?" he says, sounding less like a question and more like a statement. His gaze moves to the asari, "Renala... What's going on!? I got this message from Linda and then-... And then nothing! Where is she!?"
Renala follows beside him. "I'm fine," she says. "I didn't expect a grenade, and was-" She looks up at Jason. "We got hit hard, but everyone's fine. The militia even gave us a helping hand. The chief kicked some ass, too." A small smirk follows.
Jason takes a couple more steps forward and his entire body seems to ease up. He reaches down and settles his hand over his wound once again. "Everyone's fine?" he asks, repeating the asari's words, "where-...?" he glances around, "Where is she?" he asks.
Jason lets out a deep breath he seemed to have been holding in and slowly leans forward, resting a hand on his thigh as if the wind had been knocked out of him. He reaches up and grabs his head and nods a couple times. "Alright... Why are you here if everyone's fine?" he asks.
Renala frowns. "I didn't get out of the way fast enough when one of the assholes slipped a grenade into the lobby," she says before looking up at Ilyna with a raised eyebrow, but returns her gaze to Jason. "I'm fine, just... need to have it checked by a doctor."
Jason stands up straight after a few moments and looks her over. "Fuck... You have no idea how worried I was." he sighs. He reaches up and rubs at his face, "Who hit us? Do we know?"
Mendez glances past Jason, towards the hospital with a nod. "He was wounded in the attack. He's being looked at right now."
Jason nods to himself as his omni-tool begins to beep. "Alright... Stick around, Mendez. No telling whether they'll try getting their hands on him again." He glances over at Ilyna apologetically, "I'm sorry..." he says, "If she's coming here, I should stay. Didn't mean to make you come all this way for nothing."
Ilyna shrugs, offering a small smile. "It's nothing to worry about," she says. "I'm glad to hear everyone's okay, too."
Jason shakes his head. "No-..." he begins, turning on his heels. A sharp pain shoots through his side again, causing him to wince and hunch over. He nods a bunch of times, "Yeah-... Yeah. That's probably not a bad idea."
Ilyna can't help but chuckle as she enables her omni-tool, notifying and paying for her taxi. She then takes his hand over her shoulder, her other around his waist. Her omni-tool's projection dissipates.
Renala makes her way up to the entrance, proceeding inside and looking around for a clerk or any other staff.
The clinic is as always, busy and understaffed. The desk is manned by a VI represented with a basic human hologram.
Jason takes a seat at the edge of his bed once back in his room and releases his grip on Ilyna. He sighs loudly. "Thanks... I appreciate it."
Renala approaches the VI. "Hey, I'd like to get something looked at as soon as possible," she says, assuming she's already in the system. "I have a few grenade fragments in my back, to sum it up."
Ilyna smiles. "Maybe it's for the best Vasquez didn't see you up and about," she says. "And I'm glad I could help."
The hologram looks at Renala and gestures at one of the seats. "Our personnel has been alerted to your situation. Please have a seat until a doctor is ready to see you." At this moment an asari nurse steps around the corner. "Oh, shut up." she says and moves up to Renala, offering to help her to a room. "Sorry, that thing doesn't seem to understand the concept of emergency care. Come with me."
Jason furrows his brow. "What's that supposed to mean?" he asks, "She's not my boss!" he insists. A dark haired nurse enters the room to check on one of the other patients and, for a split second, Jason's eyes go wide. He clears his throat once he realizes it isn't Vasquez, "I should get out of this gear..." he says and slowly begins removing his armor plating.
Renala smiles. "Thank you," she starts following the nurse. "That must have been a pretty big thing to miss when nailing down the requirement specification."
The nurse lets out a short laugh. "Don't even get me started..." She leads Renala into one of the treatment rooms and then fetches a doctor - also asari, who examines the injuries.
One of the militia gunships comes soaring over the rooftops, and lands next to the Redrock shuttle. Vasquez soon exits, still in full combat gear, and proceeds towards the stairs after exhanging a few words with the militia sergeant hanging out of the Mantis' open ramp.
Ilyna glances at the nurse, and she can't help but chuckle at Jason's reaction. "Anyway I can help?"
Jason continues setting his armor on the bed beside him. He glances towards the dresser with a nod. "Mind putting these away for me?" he asks. He removes the Revenant from his back and hands it over to Ilyna.
Renala waves back at Mendez before proceeding into the treatment room. She takes off her jacket, but her top is still barely hanging on her. The injury is mild for being hit by a grenade, and two of the eight fragments had been removed already. Medi-gel is keeping it sable.
Mendez stands from his seat and takes a step towards Vasquez. "They took the salarian away on a stretcher and Renala was just escorted off to a room. Not much to report on, they haven't updated me yet, Chief. Jason told me to stick around and make sure nobody makes another attempt at nabbing our buddy."
The asari doctor nods a few times after examining the injury. "We're taking you to surgery immediately and getting these fragments out. You got lucky. If one of these had hit your spine... or your neck..."
Jason tosses his pauldrons on the bed. He glances over at Ilyna. "Nine-Nine-Nine-..." he begins, relaying the code to the dresser, "...Nine-Nine-One."
Vasquez nods. "Good call. I want you here on guard duty until we can move Jelvan. I need to have a word with Wolfe." She starts moving but stops and glances back at Mendez. "Good job today. We'd have been fucked without your quick arrival." She keeps on heading towards the patient room Jason is in.
Ilyna types in the code, five nines followed by a one. "Did you pick that code yourself?" she says, opening the door and putting the weapon inside. She moves back to the bedside to pick up several armor pieces.
Mendez scratches at the back of his neck and retakes his seat. "Not a problem, Chief. Let's just hope that's the last we see of them." he calls out.
Renala smiles slightly. "Yeah, the universe probably thought I needed some good luck to balance it out today," she says, not sounding too serious. "Any idea how long I'll be in here?"
Jason nods to himself. "Of course." he says, as if it should be obvious, "Nine-hundred-ninetey-nine-thousand-nine-hundred-ninety-one. It's my lucky number." He begins removing the plating on his thighs.
The doctor ponders this question for a moment. "No guarantees, but we shouldn't need to keep you more than overnight. But you'll need to take it easy for a while."
Vasquez enters the patient room, stopping and crossing her arms as she sees Jason in the middle of getting out of his armor. She raises her eyebrow. She doesn't seem to notice, or at least give much thought to Ilyna.
Ilyna puts the handful of armor pieces into the dresser and is about to go back to fetch more when she spots the woman by the door. "Hey," she says, looking a little embarrassed, deferring to Jason to explain.
Jason glances over at Vasquez slowly. His eyes lock on her as he slowly removes the plate off his other thigh, as if she may not notice if he moves slow enough. "I heard what happened..." he says, "Glad you're alright."
Vasquez looks rather unamused. With furrowed brows she starts: "You were-..." She trails off and covers her face with her palm. "Of course you were." She mutters, shaking her head.
Renala nods. "Fair enough," she says. "Can I send a message home before surgery? The kid fears the worst whenever I don't take her calls."
Renala enables her omni-tool, and starts to type a quick message to her daughter. After she's done, she lets the interface dissipate.
Jason gives Vasquez a shrug, as if to say 'what did you expect?' He removes his boots. "I didn't get an answer. I thought you were hurt. Or worse. I had to at least try..." he explains, "Look, can we not do this now? We've got a guest." he gestures towards Ilyna with a lopsided grin, hoping her presence may diffuse the situation.
Vasquez looks up, lowering her arms. She clearly hadn't paid much attention to the asari. She is quite visibly surprised. "Wha-... Ilyna?" She slowly gains a faint grin. "Wasn't yesterday..."
Ilyna nods, taking a few steps towards her. "Hey, Vasquez," she says, a small smile forming. "I'm sorry, I've been meaning to visit you."
Vasquez moves closer as well and extends a hand towards Ilyna with a friendly nod. "Nice to see a familiar face. What are you doing out here?"
Ilyna takes the woman's hand. "I told Jason I would be visiting," she says. "I've just been slow with following up on my word."
Vasquez nods once more, shaking Ilyna's hand. "Never had a chance to meet you last time you were here." She turns her gaze to Jason after letting go of the asari's hand. "You didn't mention Ilyna was coming."
Jason sighs once he's free of all his armor. "Wasn't exactly sure when she would be here." he says with a shrug, "She was planning on staying over at the agency. I told her we have a second floor that's nearly completely unused." he says with a smile, "Better than renting a room."
Vasquez lets out a loud sigh as she's reminded of the current situation. She glances of to the side briefly. "Yeah, uh... we're gonna be living in the Miner's Respite for a while."
Jason furrows his brow. "Sever-... Missing!?" he asks, giving a pained grunt as his energetic reaction caused a sharp pain to shoot through his side. He reaches down and rubs at it. "I'm gone for one day and you've literally destroyed our home." he says, sounding more impressed than angry, "That-... That's somethin' else..."
Vasquez forces a smile. "Yeah, we, uh... we're in trouble. We haven't even gotten the information we need from the salarian yet."
Shit... They didn't put up that much of a fight when we took the little fucker. Why do they want him back so bad?
Ilyna keeps quiet while they talk, picking up the remaining armor pieces and moving them to the dresser.
Vasquez shakes her head. "No fucking clue. But I intend to find out when Doc gets him fixed up. Look, we can talk more later... I'm gonna salvage what I can from the base and get us set up in the Miner's Respite." She points at Ilyna. "And you. We'll talk later too, yeah?"
Jason leans back and presses his palms flat against the bed to hold his weight up. "Be careful, Linda..." he says.
Vasquez pats the Confetti Maker on her back with a grin. "Don't worry about me." She says before turning around and leaving.
Jason sighs loudly once Vasquez is gone. "I'm sorry, Ilyna..." he apologizes again, shaking his head, "Just bad timing. Guessing this tosses a wrench in your plans, huh?"
Ilyna considers it for a few seconds. "I'll have to see how long I can stay at Miner's Respite," she says, "but I can help with rebuilding... if it's possible to rebuild it."
I'm not even sure how we're gonna handle that. We'll probably just hire the guys that worked on it for us before. I'm gonna have to see how she wants to handle it... Hope it's not as bad as she's making it out to be. We were already hurting for credits before all this...
Ilyna frowns. "I think I'll go for a walk there tomorrow," she says. "I'll ask Vasquez first, of course."
Jason nods. "I need to get a look at it myself." he says, glancing down at his side, "Soon as these fucking doctors let me out of here. I'm sick of this place already." he sighs, looking around a bit.
A man's voice can be heard from the other side of the divider. "The food sucks! I don't like pie! I don't wanna stay. Wah! Whine, whine, whine, that's all you do! Suck it up!"
Jason scowls at the divider. "What did I tell you, Willy!? Shut that fucking mouth or I'm gonna come over there and shut it for you!" he shouts. His mood immediately brightens up after threatening the old man and his smirk returns. "Thanks for the help." he says, returning his attention to Ilyna, "Probably wasn't the best idea to try leaving."
Ilyna chuckles. "And I should probably have urged you to stay," she says. "Let's hope this didn't do anything to prolong your stay here."
Jason lets out a quick laugh, "Can't really blame yourself. I've never needed someone's permission to do something stupid. Hell, if you hadn't sent me that message when you did, I would've taken off on my own anyway."
Ilyna nods. "I believe you," she says, before a yawn escapes her. "But I should probably get back to the Respite. I'm sure Va'ynna is eager to know what happened."
Jason gives a couple nods. "Let her know I'll be seeing her soon." he says, giving another glance around the room, "This place can't keep me forever."
Ilyna smiles. "I'll see you again, Jason," she says. "I can come by tomorrow if you're still here." She makes her way out of the room without awaiting any response ot that.
Jason nods to himself and stands up. "Take care, Ilyna." he calls as he begins to remove his undersuit.
