#Catacombs – March 23, 2015
Jason continues in the direction of Halisi, Jattic, and Fatsani. "Not much further..." he encourages. A twinge of pain shoots through the side of his face.
Jattic glances towards the others as the door opens, not looking particularly spry. He looks between Fatsani's body and those being carried. "We've lost too many. We need to get out of here while some of us still live..."
Halisi emerges from the tiny room and hurries towards the group. Her eyes widen as she sees the state of Damien. "Set him down." She gives the krogan a stern look. "Gently."
Ilyna stops not far into the hallway. "Where should I put him?" she says followed by a deep breath. "He... didn't make it."
Jason looks at Jattic sadly for a moment as his eyes come to rest on Fatsani. "Just... Set him down for now, Ilyna." he says as he himself crouches down and lays Leah on her back as softly as he can manage, "We're gonna take a breather while Halisi makes her rounds... Then we'll work on getting out of this place." He places his back against the hallway wall and slowly slides to the floor.
Garr shrugs and dumps Damien on the ground, then holds out the arm. "Want this too? It's sort of a free bonus."
Halisi gets down on her knees next to Damien after he is placed on the floor, holding out her omni-tool over him and running a scan. "Oh my God... what happened down there?"
Ilyna gently sets the salarian down on the floor, revealing the grim green coat of paint on that side of her armor. "I'm not sure how to describe it," she says. "We... found the other artifact."
Jason lifts the orb off of Leah's lap and pulls it onto his own. "Nothing good, doc. Do what you can for everyone. Get them stable so we can get moving. It's time to go home..."
Damien raises his head, groggily looking up at the doc. "I... I can't feel... Arm," he groans. He has yet to look at his arm and his working one is keeping him propped up.
Halisi looks up at the mention of the artifact, staring at it for a moment once locating it in Jason's grasp, but she soon returns her attention to her patient. She does her best to give Damien a reassuring look. "Don't worry about that. I'll get you fixed up." She takes out an injector filled with a yellowish-green liquid. "I'm going to give you a sedative. Everything will be fine when you wake up." She pushes the needle through a slot
Damien slowly lays his head on the ground, eyes closing shut as he drifts into a drug induced slumber. Oh sweet, sweet slumber.
Jason watches Monroe from his spot. "He'll make it.... right?" he asks as he stares at the man, sounding like all the wind has been knocked out of him.
Halisi takes the arm from Garr, looking it over with a hint of distaste. "This is mangled. It will never re-attach." She puts the arm on the floor, shaking her head. "The sedative I gave him should keep him out and keep his vitals stable for the moment, but I'll need to do something about his lung as soon as we're back on the ship. I... should be able to fix him up."
Halisi moves over to Leah, making a gesture at the krogan to move out of her way. She kneels down next to the woman and starts running a scan.
Leah eyes the doctor without moving her head. "I can't feel anything below my waist... I-... think my back is broken."
Garr has nothing to do, so he starts stripping off the tattered remnants of his armour and salvaging the useable parts.
Ilyna is about to draw her weapon to be ready while guarding the hallway when it dawns on her. "Goddess," she mutters. "I... forgot to look for my submachine gun."
Jason unholsters his Phalanx and, holding it by the barrel, reaches out towards Ilyna from his position on the floor. "Use this for now."
Halisi looks at the readout, stopping at a certain point as her face goes blank, and looking down at Leah. "I-.." She nods faintly at the woman.
Ilyna turns towards Jason. "Thanks, but I think Lacour still has my pistol," she says. "That's not the problem. It's that... I don't think I can replace it."
Leah had already assumed as much, but hearing it causes her face to distort into a pained expression. "But-... You can-... you can fix it, right?"
Jason presses a hand against the wall and grunts loudly as he has a hell of a time climbing back to his feet. He reholsters his Phalanx since Ilyna doesn't need it. He sighs loudly and glances back towards the way they just came from, "How bad do you want it, Ilyna?"
Halisi gently places a hand on the woman's shoulder. "I'll do everything I can when we get back. Right now we need to focus on getting you out of here. What do you feel above your waist? Are you in pain?"
Leah nods slightly, immediately cringing in pain from the movement, "I feel everything above my waist and-.... and none of it feels good..." she says between pained breaths.
Ilyna glances towards Philip, checking if he still has her pistol. "You don't have to," she says, "but... I'd appreciate it if you could come with me to look for it."
Halisi nods and takes out another injector. "Don't worry, that's good. Pain is good. I'm going to give you something that will ease it for now. I'm not going to give you a sedative - I need you to stay awake. Can you do that for me?" She starts injecting something into Leah - the pain should start numbing almost immediately, but it is still there.
Halisi looks up at Ilyna. "Forget it. You're not going back there. We need to get these people out immediately." She says in a frustrated tone.
Damien would encourage Ilyna to head back for her weapon, considering he is similarly attached to his hand cannon.
Leah winces as the injector presses against her. She nods her head slightly once more. "Y-...yeah..." she groans to Halisi.
I know it's the least of our losses, but... it's the only weapon I own, and I paid a lot of credits to get it.
Jason glances at Ilyna. "Let's get the wounded to the elevator shaft. Garr, Jattic and the doc can work with Vasquez on getting them out of here, and you and I can go back for the gun."
Halisi stands up and stares at Ilyna. "I don't give a damn, the priority is the injured." She looks at Jason. "No. I need her to levitate Leah."
Whatever. It's your head, bluie. If another one of them crazy asari shows up, you give 'er the old mindfuck one-two, ya hear?
Ilyna simply nods, not giving the krogan a verbal response. She locates her pistol and picks it up. "I'm not sure if I could even do that," she says.
Halisi lets out a frustrated sigh. "Well, I need you to do your best. Someone can hold her as well, but I want minimal gravity while we're moving her. We need to get back to the ship immediately for both their sakes. No detours."
Halisi nods. "As ready as I can get them. Philip will need to be carried as well. His condition isn't critical but he's still unconcious."
Ilyna nods and holsters her pistol. "I understand," she says. "Sorry." She moves over to the salarian and picks him up.
Halisi looks down at the mangled body of Vaden. She closes her eyes for a moment, only now realizing they lost him. She turns around, checking on Philip and Damien before going back to Leah and looking at Ilyna. "Make her as light as you can - I will hold her."
Why even bother? We've got enough living people to carry, Jaze. Can't be bothered with the dead ones.
Ilyna stops and approaches Halisi instead. "Oh, right," she says, a biotic shimmer forming around her. It takes a while before a biotic field sorrounds Leah. "I'm ready."
Halisi gently starts to lift Leah, doing her best to keep her steady and do as little lifting as possible.
Jason moves over beside Philip and takes a knee beside him with a grunt. He scoops the young man up and slowly rises to his feet. "Jattic..." he says, "Gonna need you to get Monroe." he says as he begins to slowly follow behind the others.
Ilyna strengthens the field after a few seconds, making Leah essentially weightless. She waits for Halisi to get moving before following.
Jattic looks at Monroe with a grunt. "Fine." he says plainly as he begins to lift Damien with little difficulty. He hurls the man over his shoulders in a fireman's carry and follows behind the others.
Vasquez said she has a rope ladder waiting for us at the elevator shaft... We're gonna need to come up with a way of getting the wounded up that shaft, though. If anyone has any good ideas, now would be a time to voice them.
Halisi enters into the lobby, which looks unchanged from earlier. The path ahead is illuminated only by the omni-tool flashlight which she left on as she moves ahead through the final corridor, stopping near the elevator shaft. Rain is still falling down with, water pouring along the concrete sides.
Jason stops for a moment to adjust his grip on Philip before continuing behind Halisi, Ilyna, and Garr. "I'll take it over a trip down an elevator shaft any day... That's for sure..."
Ilyna just focuses on keeping the biotic field up, which is not easy given how taxing the fight with the artifact's guard was.
(Comms) Understood. I want you go get up here and bring the artifact. I'll destroy it and then you can help me get the others up.
A synthetic rope ladder is rolled off the edge of the shaft above, falling along the wall to a slightly too high height. It is inched down until it is within reach from the door. Water keeps pouring down.
Jason slowly sets Philip down on the ground. "Understood. Let's make this quick, though. Monroe is in pretty rough shape." he says over comms. He grabs ahold of the orb and stands back up. "Don't get sloppy." he says to the others, "Keep your eyes open."
Ilyna is still holding the biotic field up. "We need to move Leah soon," she says, sounding strained, "I can't keep this up much longer."
Jason gives Ilyna a nod and slowly begins to ascend the rope ladder, having a bit of trouble due to sheer fatigue. With a bit of effort, he eventually nears the top and begins to pull himself up.
Vasquez reaches out to pull Jason up onto the ground - the water splashes as he comes up. The moat has been flooded by the rain, leaving water pouring into the shaft. The orb is taken away from Jason and rolled back and he would find himself looking at the barrel of an Eviscerator aimed at his head. Holding the gun is Vasquez, soaked by the rain and with a regretful look on her face. "I'm sorry, Jason."
Jason looks less afraid, and simply confused as he stares into the weapon. "Wha-... What's going on, Linda?" he asks as he slowly rises to his feet. The rain is doing a nice job of washing the blood from the side of his face, plenty of little shards are still protruding from it, however.
Jattic takes a knee and slides Damien off his shoulders and onto the floor. He takes a moment to sit Monroe against the wall. "Will that even hold under the krogan's weight?" he asks, nodding at the rope ladder.
Vasquez seems like she wants to say something when a voice is heard buzzing on her comms. She seems to be forcing herself to meet his gaze. "I'm sorry..." She repeats with a shaky voice, and suddenly adjusts the aim to his right shoulder instead of his head, firing off a point blank blast with the shotgun.
Jason catches the full brunt of the shot. His armor buckles and splinters inwards, and his body nearly lifts off the ground as he slams backwards to the floor. He clenches his teeth together and slams his eyes shut. "L-... Linda.... What-..." is all he manages as a surge of pain overcomes him.
Vasquez looks down at Jason for a moment, mumbling "I'm sorry..." a third time before turning around and walking out of his field of view. The sound of a vehicle starting can be heard after a while. The rain keeps hammering down on him.
Jason clutches at his shoulder as he stares up at the rain. "Linda!" he calls out as he hears the vehicle starting. He attempts to roll onto his side, but the intense pain freezes him in place. A few moments pass as he lays bleeding all over the place and breathing heavily until his vision begins to get fuzzy. The sound of Ilyna's voice snaps him out of his daze. He reaches over and
Ilyna frowns as she hears the vehicle. Without any ado, she takes hold of the ladder, and starts climbing.
Jason remains on his back. He lifts his head and begins to frantically look around for any sign of Vasquez.
Ilyna stops for a moment to enable her comms. "Hang in there, I'm coming up," she says. "Is anyone else there?" She doesn't await a response before carrying on.
Damien 's breathing is now reaching the point of sheer agony, creeping into his pain receptors even through the protection of the drug. Oh how he prays for the sweet release of death... Or more drugs. Either is good.
Jason reaches for his Phalanx but before he can even raise it, his trembling grip waivers and it falls to the floor. Unable to keep his head up any longer, he allows it to fall back to the soaking wet ground. He makes no attempt to respond to Ilyna, most likely unable to even proccess what she's saying to him.
Ilyna eventually reaches the top and immediately hurries to Jason's side, looking him over. She picks out her medi-gel canister.
Halisi starts climbing as soon as Ilyna is up, giving a quick glance at Jattic before she goes. "You two stay here, keep them safe. We'll be back."
Garr grumbles at being stuck down there with two corpses, a lot of coma patients and no way up except a flimsy rope.
Halisi scrambles to the top of the shaft as fast as she can, slipping once or twice on the wet rungs of the ladder. She crawls over the edge and finds herself looking down at Jason. "Wha-... what happened?!" She starts digging through her satchel.
Ilyna is already removing armor pieces and applying medi-gel by the time Halisi reaches the top. She looks incredibly worried.
Jason reaches up and grabs at Ilyna's arm, attempting to stop her with little success. "Linda... She... In danger... Needs help..." he mutters. He begins leaning forward, possibly attempting to get up, but just as quickly falls back to the ground.
Halisi pulls out the injector she used on Damien previously, cleaning it quickly and jabbing it into Jason's arm. The drug cocktail should sedate him and keep his vitals from going crazy. "C'mon..."
Jattic stares up at the ladder. "The human won't last long if we don't get him out of here. You're a battlemaster, are you not?" he asks.
Jason seems to calm a bit as the drugs begin to do their work. His grip on Ilyna's arm weakens a bit. "You-... have to find her. Make sure-... she's okay..." he pants.
Jattic continues to examine the ladder. "Perhaps you can assist me in getting him out of here. As Ilyna did with Leah. If you can lower his weight, I could simply hold him and grasp onto the rope ladder. The others could pull me up."
Jason has a point-blank shotgun blast to his right shoulder. The scan would show that he has a fucking point-blank shotgun blast to his right shoulder! He's rapidly bleeding to death and barely has much between the his torso and arm.
Halisi looks over at Ilyna. "I-... the arm is a lost cause. There's a lot of trauma, but his vital organs are good. He's going to need a blood transfusion when we get back to the ship."
Jattic lets out a low, frustrated growl and puts his hands on his hips as he continues to study the situation, looking for an answer to their problem.
Ilyna looks back at Halisi. "Can you get him into the APC?" she says. "I... should help get the other injured out."
Halisi glances at the vehicle and then nods. Ater making sure his wounds are completely coated in medi-gel she starts dragging Jason across the mud and water.
(Comms) This is bad. Vasquez is gone, and Jason is severly hurt. Our APC is still here, though, so I'm coming down to help get the rest out.
Halisi drags Jason into the APC, shoving the ammo boxes aside and laying him gently onto the floor. She glances out of the APC for any sign of threats before kneeling next to him. "I'll get you patched up, don't worry. I'll get everyone patched up..."
Ilyna gets off the ladder when she's down at the hallway, entering. "So, how are we doing this?" she asks.
Jason shakes his head weakly. "No. I'll be-... fine." he says, his breathing having calmed down a bit, "Have to find... Linda..."
Jattic takes a step back from the ladder as Ilyna descends it. "Perhaps you can do what you did for Leah to the krogan. He would have little trouble scaling the ladder if he wasn't so large."
We should get the injured up first, and... I'm not sure if I have enough left in me to help Garr up.
Halisi closes her eyes with a sigh. "Don't worry about that... you just rest." She takes out a roll of bandage and starts applying it to his injuries. She wraps Jason's arm and chest, binding the arm to the chest to keep it from being damaged further, despite there being little hope of repairing it.
There's not much we can do to help the injured up with just a rope ladder. If Garr was able to get up to the surface, I suppose he could pull the ladder up while I hold on. If you were able to do again what you did for Leah, holding onto her wouldn't be an issue. Then, we'd simply toss the ladder down once more and repeat the proccess for Monroe.
Ilyna nods. "I understand," she says, "but I would have to climb the ladder behind him to keep the field up. It takes more energy to keep a krogan up. I'm not sure if I could handle that, and what would happen if I fail."
