#East – April 9, 2016
The assembly of the research camp has been a lengthy process, taking over four hours, but now finally, with the help of those of Redrock not guarding the perimiter, the prefabricated shelters have been fully set up. Four modules. One with a series of cramped, uncomfortable bunks as well as a latrine about the size of a plane bathroom. The second module holds a portable lab where the science team can perform limited testing without having to
return to the Saint Lucia. The third module holds a small kitchenette stocked with MREs (and the coffee machine obligatory to any science team) and a table with four chairs. The fourth and final module holds a small airlock that leads outside, as well as storage for tools, suits and weapons. Attached to the small compound on the outside is a generator that provides heat and power, kept raised to prevent sinking into the ice. With the base
complete, preparations have begun on the set-up of the laser drill. Pablo is leading the effort with the help of Bort and Plask. Harmonia is outside, talking to Mana D'Kira, who has once again set up her measuring equipment. Yan Sun is currently lying in one of the bunks, staring up at the ceiling while getting a moment's rest after spending quite a while setting up the compound's electrical system. Athassa is at the table, eating. It's
been quite a while since they've had the chance to, after all. Leonard is in the lab, analyzing ice samples along with Rala.
Uvena is on guard duty. She is at present walking around the base, alert and ready to report anything suspicious in the distance.
Nathan has, unsurprisingly, left himself manning the cannon of the Grizzly. He has sealed the hatch shut and has managed to slip himself a cup of coffee in with him. His helmet sits in the drivers chair as he sips at the coffee, only lukewarm by this point. His omni-tool is currently shuffling through his selection of music.
Ilyna is lying on one of the free bunks, fast asleep as she's finally calmed down enough to get a nap. She's in her armor undersuit.
Tarkus was now in the prefab that contained the airlock, wearing his armor. He was checking his phaeston over, making sure everything was good about it.
Jessica is on her bunk, having already changed out of her armor, as her guard shift isn't until after the next cycle. She rotates in her seat, her omni-tool casting a glow around the room as she continues to take pictures of their living space, Yan Sun's photo collection seemingly has had a motivating effect on her desire to be a photographer.
Jason is dressed in his undersuit and armored boots, as he's on the next guard shift. He makes his way over to Tarkus and leans against the wall, folding his arms across his chest. "Everything make it in one piece?" he asks, nodding at the locker of gear.
Korio is laying flat on his back in his bunk, eyes closed. The gentle rising of his chest the only sign that he's even breathing. His hands are folded across his chest.
The temperature in the shelters is rather cold despite the heating, but not as cold as being outside, even in a hardsuit.
Nathan sighs and looks down at his now empty cup. He decides now will be a good time for a break. He reaches over and pulls on his helmet, sealing it. He turns off his music and reaches up. He unseals the hatch and clambers out, almost slipping on the icy surface of the Grizzly. He jumps down and starts towards the camp, clutching the empty mug in hand.
Jasper is seated in the kitchenette, telling Athassa and Nalota about the time he drove a troop transport throughout the base he was working on with no pants due to a particularly mean prank by co-workers.
Jasper cups both hands around his coffee and shakes his head. "Las' time they ever took my pants, I tell ya what."
Yan Sun chuckles quietly to herself as she notices Jessica taking pictures. She props herself up on her elbows and looks in her direction. "Having fun?"
Linora 's voice comes in over Jason's comms: "I'd like to have a word. Do you have time to come out?"
Jessica scowls at Yan Sun before snapping a photo of her as well. "Is not fun. Is for memories." she assures her before a smirk returns to her face and she allows a slight shrug as she takes a photo of Korio's ridiculously put-together method of sleeping, "Okay... Maybe a little fun..."
Athassa looks at Jasper with an amused but skeptical look on her face as she chew on the rather bland premade food. "Really...?"
Tarkus nods at Jason "I know my gear has made it. Not keeping track of everyone else's gear." He tells Jason and and turns to him "Not time, you decide to take a job on a frozen planet. Give me some warning."
Jasper slaps a hand against the table and points at Nalota. "Exactly!" he says as he looks back at Athassa. "D'ya think I'd spin a lie to ya? Course! I acted like nothin' was amiss. Jus' went about my daily dues in my skivvies. By the end of the day, they were offerin' me their own pants just to get me covered up!" he says with a bit of loud laughter.
Jason smirks at Tarkus, "A few days ago you were out of credits and in need of work, now you're getting picky about the weather? C'mon! The pay is good and, if everything keeps going this well, the effort is minimal. Cheer up!" He reaches out and pats the turian on the shoulder, although his smirk fades somewhat as Linora's voice comes on over his comms. "Yeah, I'm free. Where are you, Linora?"
Jessica pokes at her interface a few times, causing the image to flip around and display a large assortment of photos that slowly cycle. "Not really..." she admits with a sigh. They showcase all different angles of their campsite in different stages of its construction as well as the interior once it was finished. Most are off-center or lopsided. A few even seem to cut off the focus of the photo entirely. "...I think my program
Linora rounds the corner to the airlock, and raises an eyebrow at Nathan through her suit. She says nothing as she waits for the man to head inside.
Tarkus shakes his head at the human "When does anything keep going this well?" He says to the human as he talks over the comms.
Athassa just barely manages to not choke on her food as she joins in Jasper's laughter. "That is an... interesting approach."
Yan Sun snickers quietly. "Maybe I should take a look and see if I can do something about that, hm?"
Nalota is quick to join in the laughter, as well. "That's... great," she says once she has had a chance to breathe.
Jason glares at Tarkus as he maneuvers around in the cramped environment and begins to put on his chestplate from its storage compartment. "You're gonna jinx us." he says. "Besides, it's just a few days and then we'll be heading back to Aite. We'll manage." As he locks the chestplate into place, he reactivates comms, "Be right there, Linora." He slips his gauntlets on and begins to lock his
Jessica pulls her arm back instinctively as if Yan Sun may try to take her omni-tool. "No, it's fine! I'll just get a new program when we return to Aite." she assures her with a nod. The interface dissipates as she sets the omni-tool down on the bed beside her and rotates in place, propping herself up on her elbow as well, and faces Yan Sun. "And what about you, kitty cat? Are you having fun? I was under the impression that you
Nathan looks to Linora and offers her a nod, before turning back and smacking the interface again as it continues to spin. "C'mon...".
Linora 's voice comes in a moment later again. Her tone remains polite. "I prefer Professor, Mr. Wolfe."
Jasper's laughter fades out into a sigh. "They were good times." he says with a nod, "But them days are behind me." He puts up a hand and shakes his head as he corrects himself, "Not the good ones! I still got plenty of spark left in these ol' bones! Jus' my days of runnin' 'round an Alliance base in my undies!"
Jason rolls his eyes as he hears Linora and glances over at Nathan. "And I'd prefer if she'd come to me if she wanted to talk with me rather than forcing me to gear up and step out onto that popsicle, but I'm not going to be a pompous ass about it..." he snarks to Nathan- obviously not over comms- not providing any context although Nathan would obviously be able to hear the comms chatter
and figure it out for himself. "You let the others know you were taking your break?" he asks as he sidesteps to get past Nathan.
Yan Sun puts on her best offended face. "Hey! I just spent, like... three hours setting this place up. I don't get to take a break?" she sends a light kick Jessica's way across the small distance between the bunks.
Athassa tilts her head curiously. "How long were you in the Systems Alliance?" she says before taking another bite of mashed... something from the plastic container.
Nathan chuckles at Jason, shrugging his shoulders as the man rants to him. "Not yet, was waiting until I was at the coffee machine because... well, coffee."
Jessica allows her smirk to return as she bats away at Yan Sun's kick with one of her own. "Now, now! Just because you're cute doesn't mean I won't kick your ass!"
Jasper lowers his gaze to the table, nodding a few times as he does the math. "Well, I joined pretty much right outta highschool..." he begins, "...Puts me at 'bout 30 years an' some change." He nods once more and takes a sip of his coffee.
Jason pats Nathan on the back as he moves past him and enters the airlock. "Don't worry about it, I'll let them know. Just get warmed up." he says before reaching over and activating his comms. "Uvena, Artullin. Ten is going on break, so it's just the two of you out there. As soon as he's back, one of you can come inside and take a break. Get warmed up. I'll let you argue amongst yourselves
Nalota picks up the remainder of the whatever is in the mystery bag with a spoon. "Is that the usual length of service?" she asks before eating the food.
Nathan nods his thanks as he walks past Tarkus and toward the coffee machines, snaking his way through the camp.
Uvena keeps walking outward. "My suit's keeping the cold out very well," she says over comms. "If you need to warm up, then go ahead."
Yan Sun lets out a brief giggle and slides her legs off the bunk to put her feet on the floor. She seems about to retort when her arm lights up and emits a beep. She seems briefly confused and allows her omni-tool to manifest. After looking at a small screen projection for a moment she groans. "Ah, crap... speaking of work..."
Jason winces as the cold air hits him once more, a stark contrast to inside. He rolls his shoulders and steps back outside, giving a glance around. "What can I do for you?" he asks, trying to remain polite despite not particularly wanting to be out here before his guard shift.
Jessica pouts and crosses her arms over her chest. "Orrrrrr." she says, gripping the edge of her covers and pulling them up over her, "You could just stay here and warm up with me." She tugs the blankets up to her neck, making a show of getting all comfy, "Sooooo warm." she taunts.
Linora nods for Jason to come with her as she starts to walk away from the airlock. "I was hoping we could talk. Word has spread among the rest of the research team about what happened with Harmonia..."
Jasper gives Nalota a shrug. "Depends on when ya get in. I retired early, but there ain't much of a 'usual length'." he offers. As Nathan makes his appearance, he gives the man a wave. "Eh, Ten. Cold gettin' to ya yet?"
Nathan nods to Jasper, chuckling slightly as he flicks up his visor. "Sorta. I wanted a fresh mug of coffee to warm my young and handsome bones," he jokes as he waggles the mug.
Jason rolls his eyes from behind his armor and folds his arms across his chest. "O...kay? And?" He pauses but quickly thinks better than to leave it at that, "Look, for what it's worth, my guy was out of line. But Harmonia went out of her way to rile him up. If you're having second thoughts about my team, you can put that to rest right now. We're not a bunch of two-bit thugs from Omega looking
to make a quick buck. We're here to make sure you and the rest of your team come home in one piece. And regardless of our personal feelings, we'll do our job."
Jasper nods. "Well ya certainly got my sympathy. Wouldn't wanna be out there myself. Have me doin' the jitter bug all day." he says, hugging himself and vibrating in his seat as he chatters his teeth, pantomiming as if he were freezing.
Yan Sun frowns at Jessica. "Ugh... you suck." she says as she stands up, shoving her lightly on her way out into what little open space there is in the room. "One of the probes is stuck. Gonna have to drive out there and fix it..."
Jessica chuckles as she sprawls out in her bed, nestling up to her pillow. "With all of that ice. And snow. And wind." she reminds with a sigh, "Lucky you. Well I'll just be here. Stuck in my warm, comfortable bed. Have fun."
Nalota nods to him, but doesn't say anything. She puts the bag down on the table before downing her slightly colder than lukewarm coffee, making quite the grimace at the taste.
Uvena resumes her patrol around the base, moving in a path that would get her closer to it while circling it. "If you insist," she replies over the comms.
Nathan walks over to the coffee machine and starts to fill it, humming a tune to himself. "Well, the tank is warmer than outside, so I can't complain too much."
Jasper gives a light chuckle. "Ahh, claimed the Grizzly fer' yerself, then? Sneaky. That's good thinkin'." he says, tapping the side of his head. "I ain't lookin' forward to another handful a' days in this freezer, though, I can tell ya that much."
Nathan turns to face Jasper, laughing beneath his helm. "See, I can be smart from time to time," he says. "Eh, just keep the coffee flowing and near the heaters. You'll be fine then, Jasper."
Linora continues on her path, walking along the ice cliff. "That is good to hear. The Matriarch has a great deal of faith on your organization, and I trust her judgement. Your man's behavior has made some of the others uneasy however. But with your guarantee that nothing like that will happen again I will reassure them. As for Harmonia, do not judge her so harshly. She can be... cantankerous. But she means well."
Yan Sun sighs, bringing up her omni-tool interface again. "Careful with how smug you are, I'm guessing your boss is going to send someone for escort, right?"
Nalota tilts her head. "You like this 'coffee'?" she asks. "I get it, it's energizing and warm, but the taste leaves something to be desired."
Nathan looks to Athassa. "You need to try some proper coffee in that case if you love this... excuse for coffee," he says with a chuckle.
Jason continues following alongside Linora as he listens. "Rest assured, I don't intend on letting the Matriarch down. As for Harmonia? It doesn't matter to me either way, Li-.. Professor. I don't need to like someone to make sure they're safe. My only worry is that she's going to continue to rile, antagonize and insult my people. These aren't exactly the most comfortable of living conditions.
It's cold. Cramped. The hours are long without much to do in-between. Well meaning or not, this entire setup is a powder keg and she should know better than to run around with a lit match." He lets out a sigh, rubbing at his arms a bit as he continued to adjust to the cold, "Like I said. We'll do our job regardless, but you can't blame someone for being a bit ornery when they're not treated with
Nalota grins. "Or tea," she suggests. "That's at least not intentionally made to taste... like that."
Athassa sips her coffee and then looks at Nalota. "Oh, I've had enough tea when I lived back on Thessia... coffee though, coffee is new, exciting!"
Jessica rolls over in her bed, facing away from Yan Sun, letting out a loud groan. "Maybe if I go to sleep he won't have the heart to wake me." she muses, pulling the blankets up and over her head.
Jasper kicks the vacant seat out a bit and glances over at Nathan. "Have a seat, Ten. I know yer eager to get back out into that icebox, but ya might as well relax while ya have the chance."
Nathan takes the steaming mug of coffee and nods his thanks to Jasper as he drops into the seat. He pulls off his helm and sets it on the table, running a hand through his hair. "Thanks," he says. "Need to enjoy my thirty minutes while I can, no?"
Linora stops and turns around to face Jason. "Very well. That is all I can ask. Just allow me to... apologize on her behalf. She is very dedicated to her job, and that may sometimes take the form of hostility when she perceives others as interfering with it. But, regardless, I will talk to her about it as well." she offers a calm smile from under her environment suit, nodding slightly.
Jason returns the nod, his tension easing up somewhat. "Well, I'm glad we had this little talk and had a chance to put that behind us." he says, his smile returning behind his helmet, "Was that all you needed....?" He holds his breath, hoping he can return to the relative warmth inside.
Jasper gives another nod. "Yer' damn tootin'! But look on the bright side, Ten. Least you have stuff ta keep ya busy. I'm basically gonna be sittin' 'round 'til they tell me I can climb into one a' them mechs. Jus' might tear my hair out from boredom..... Ya know, what's left a' it." He snickers to himself.
Nathan chuckles, sipping at the coffee and sighing contently. "You could man the turret for awhile, in that case. I'm sure your eyesight isn't that shot." he teases.
Yan Sun just barely resists the urge to jank Jessica's cover away and instead activates her comms. "Heyo soldier-people. I'm taking a snowmobile out for a little roadtrip." she says as she heads towards the airlock, taking her suit from storage and starting to put it on.
Tarkus finishes working on his mantis and decides to put all of his weapons back into a locker. He then starts to make his way to the prefab that contains the food.
Jason gives another nod. "Alright then. Sounds like I'm needed back inside, anyway." he says, cocking a thumb back at the airlock. "Stay warm." he says as he turns to leave. As he taps the airlock interface, he activates his comms. "Not alone, you're not. Ten. Sorry to cut your break short, but you're already suited up. You and Uvena escort her where she needs to go. I'll get someone to cover
Nathan sighs loudly and nods, despite not Jason being able to see him. "Aye, aye, boss," he dryly replies. He downs his hot coffee, breifly flapping at his mouth as it burns his tongue, before pulling on his helmet and sealing it. "Wish me luck," he says to the group before heading toward the airlock.
Uvena starts jogging towards the entrance to meet up with the others, but she doesn't reply over the comms.
Jasper raises an eyebrow as he watches Nathan gear back up. "You stay safe out there, Ten." he calls out.
Yan Sun nods to Nathan as he appears. She's just about done putting her suit on. "Hey..." says, without any particular enthusiasm as she heads to the airlock, waiting for the others to join her.
Nathan replies with the same amount of enthusiasm. "Hey," he says, pulling off his rifle from his back and giving it a once over.
Jason gives a wave to Uvena as he spots her approaching. "I'm gonna head inside and grab someone to help me fill the gaps. Be careful out there. If you guys run into trouble- unstable ice, whatever- turn back. Whatever she needs to take care of can wait until we can put a larger team together or find another route if need be."
Yan Sun closes the airlock once Nathan is inside, turning around as she waits for the fairly quick cycling process. She shifts slightly from foot to foot, but says nothing.
Uvena nods. "Got it," she says. "Do you want regular reports from our trip? And should we turn back if we're out of range?"
Absolutely. Report anything out of the ordinary. Check-in often. Get a report from her and see how far you're going, and where you're going. You might not be able to avoid leaving comms range, but if we don't hear back from you in a reasonable amount of time, we need to know where to send help to.
Uvena gives a qucik salute. "I'll tell the kids," she says, not sure whether the airlock's door is soundproof in which case they'd have heard it themselves.
Yan Sun steps out once the airlock door opens. She waves at Uvena and then heads off to Linora. "Lost contact with one of the probes. We're going out on the snowmobiles to take care of it."
Nathan steps out and nods to Uvena, not having really talked to her all that much. "Alright, geared up and ready."
Linora turns her gaze away from the work on the drill, and nods to Yan Sun. "Very well. Take care, all of you." she says, her going moving to Uvena and then to Nathan, lingering a bit on him.
Jason enters the airlock, sidestepping past Yan Sun and Nathan. "Like I told Uvena..." he calls back to Nathan, "Keep in contact. Relay your location back and destination back. If you're out of comms range for too long, I'll send the Grizzly to come looking for you guys. Be safe."
Nathan nods to Linora. "Thanks." He then looks to Jason and nods again. "Alright, let's get this ball rolling."
Jason points at Nathan, "And keep your shit together. I mean it." he adds, not elaborating any more before shutting the airlock.
Yan Sun nods and heads towards the two nearby snowmobiles. She doesn't interfere in Nathan and Uvena's conversation.
Jason waits for the airlock to finish its cycle and then steps inside. He frowns as he realizes Tarkus is nowhere to be seen. "Couldn't have gone too far..." he mutters. He makes his way through the cramped base until he reaches the kitchenette and spots the familiar turian. A big grin crosses his face. "Hey Tarkus~" he sings, "...About that cold weather..."
Nathan grunts. "She was so... careless about the thought of trying to protect these people. She seemed completely unwilling to offer even a modicum of assistance. And then she just flat out started patronizing us, poking my chest and being all aloof," he says. He shrugs. "I just lost my cool... I shouldn't have."
Tarkus was just about to grab a bite to eat when he heard Jason's voice, he turns to face Jason "You want me to go out there, don't you?" Believing that is where he was going with his current words.
Jason gives a slow, satisfying nod. "For what it's worth, I'm heading out, too. which means I'll most likely be pulling a double shift. Just until Nathan and Uvena get back."
Tarkus nods and sighs "Fair enough. Lets go freeze to death." He states in a defeated tone and makes his way back to the airlock.
Uvena glances at him. "What kind of assistance did you ask for?" she says. "If she's getting in the way of doing our job, you should get it in writing with her signature on it. Or... maybe that doesn't work out here like on Illium." She is still following Yan.
Athassa looks up at Tarkus and Jason from her seat, sipping her coffee. "Have fun!" she says with a grin.
Jason follows behind the turian after giving the others in the room a quick wave. "I've still got some plating to strap on, so it's gonna take me a minute. Go on out, though. See if Artullin wants to take his break."
Jasper glances at them from over his shoulder and then looks back at Athassa with a shrug. "Soooo." he begins, looking between the two asari, "What is it ya'll do 'round here?"
Yan Sun looks gleefully at the nearest snowmobile, and proceeds to straddle it while activating her omni-tool, connecting to the vehicle and starting it up. "This should be fun..."
Nathan chuckles, shrugging his shoulders as he stops besides a snowmobile. "It... doesn't work exactly like that, no. I was asking if we could use some of the spare parts to rig up some grenades as mines. Y'know, to cover our blindspots and make sure we have greater coverage of the perimeter. But she was all, 'noooooo, our research is too important to spare some
extra pieces which we currently have no need for.'" He snorts and looks to the side. "Anyway, what's done is done... you know how to drive one of these?"
Yan Sun looks to Nathan and furrows her eyebrows. "Can't be too different from a motorbike, right?" she says with a shrug and then gestures with her thumb over her shoulder. "You do realize we're on our way to fix up one of the probes right now, don't you? I doubt it'll be the last either, the cold is really wearing on them."
Uvena shrugs. "How hard can it be?" she says. "I've driven all kinds of sky-cars, but none of the stuff on the ground I'll admit."
Nathan looks to Yan. "Not everyone knows how to ride a motorbike," he says pointedly. "But, luckily, I do." He hops onto one of the snowmobiles, looking at Yan. "So, if we're going to fix one up... did you bring the spares?" He connects it to his omni-tool and starts it up, grinning as it roars to life.
Yan Sun pats the small hard plastic case strapped right behind her on the snowmobile. "Yup. Packed it earlier. Figured something like this would happen the way the probes were struggling."
Jason stops outside of the airlock and opens the storage up. He pulls his Revenant out and sets it aside before he begins strapping armor into place, already dreading the cold air outside.
Nathan nods approvingly, offering her a thumbs up. "Good thinking, batman," he says, waiting for Uvena to hop onto either his or Yan's snowmobile.
Uvena sits down on Nathan's snowmobile, wrapping her arms around him. "I'm driving on the return trip," she says, sound more like a demand than a suggestion.
Nathan glances over his shoulder. He shakes his head with a chuckle. "Not on your life," he says back to her, making to gently nudge her in the ribs before looking to Yan. "Lead on!" He revs the engine, giddily giggling as the engine roars with each twist of the throttle.
Yan Sun raises an eyebrow at Nathan. "Batman? Wow. How old are you?" she says with a shake of her head before starting to take her snowmobile out of the camp, staying at a slow pace until clear of the parked vehicles.
Uvena chuckles. "That wasn't a question," she says. "You kids have had all the fun so far, It's only fair you share a bit of it, hm?"
Nathan chimes in over the comm as he follows Yan. "Ninety-five," he replies in a deadpan. "I moisturize daily. Keeps me young looking." He then chuckles and replies to Uvena. "Then take over Yan's! I'm keeping this snowmobile. I will call it Snowy and it shall be mine and it will be my Snowy." He then laughs. "Nah, just kidding. Course you can, Atana."
Jason finishes strapping on his armor plating and lifts his Revenant from against the wall where he left it, loading a thermal clip into it and collecting a couple more for good measure.
Uvena could be smiling right now. "Thanks," she says. "Ninety-five, huh? That's barely more than a kid where I come from."
Yan Sun picks up speed once they've cleared the research camp, heading east into the flat, snow-covered land. "...you're a weirdo, Nathan."
Nalota sighs. "Just grunt work, it seems like," she says. "Not what I signed up for, but at least I'll get to see what it's like under the ice."
Nathan doesn't look to Uvena, but chuckles. "I'll take that as double reinforcement that I'm beautifully young, then!" He guns the throttle and ends up alongside Yan, offering her a thumbs up. "Yeah, get that a lot! But, hey, gotta joke about and enjoy life, right?" To emphasize his point, he picks up speed until he starts to pass Yan, despite not knowing where
Jasper shrugs his shoulders as he looks across the table to Nalota. "Ain't nothin' wrong with grunt work. It's good to work yer way up from the bottom. Builds character. So what is it ya signed up fer, then?"
Artullin watches the snowmobiles as they speed away, idly offering a salute to them. He resumes his patrol.
Yan Sun glances to her side as Nathan and Uvena pass, and then speeds up as well, making sure to keep up with them. The snow lies heavier on the ground today, rather than powdery as when they arrived. Much is kicked up in their wake, but it falls just as quickly. It's not long before they can barely be seen from the camp.
Tarkus leaves the air lock as it finally opens, spotting Artullin, he decides to shout out to him. "Hey Artullin, go take your break."
Uvena chuckles. "Take that as you will," she says, then tilts her head. "Why are you trying to overtake the one leading the way?" She glances back to see the camp start to disappear in the horizon, but she doesn't report in yet.
Artullin turns towards his fellow Turian and waves. He then holsters his rifle and starts to walk back toward the airlock.
Nathan laughs. "Just encouraging her to live a little, have some fun and all that! It's not often you get to much about on snowmobiles across an open expanse like this," he replies. "Life is too short... well, maybe not for you asari, but for us humans, life is too short to be miserable and consistently professional in a galaxy that is just so... ripe with
Tarkus starts his patrol around the prefab, until he spots a ladder on to the roof of the prefab. He decides it would be best to have a height advantage and climbs the ladder to the roof.
Nalota frowns. "There must be something under all this snow and ice, and it'll be so great if I'm one of the first to ever see it."
Jason finishes gearing up and enters the airlock. After it finishes its cycle and opens up, he spots Artullin. "Uvena and Ten are handling some off-site business." he informs, despite the turian almost assuredly having figured this out by now based on the comms chatter, "Me and Tarkus will take over for them until they return. Take a rest, meet us back outside in 30 or so." he says as he steps
Athassa offers Nalota a smile. "You'll get your chance. You just have to be patient. You should be honored Professor T'Ris selected you to be part of the diving team!"
Yan Sun seems to consider butting in to the conversation after Nathan's comments, but decides against it, and just keeps driving at high speed.
Jasper gives Nalota a nod, gesturing towards Athassa. "Uh huh! We're gon' get a look down there eventually. Gon' be quite the experience."
Uvena laughs, as well. "The galaxy moves too fast for us to put things off to the next century," she says. "While we do make decisions that may not pan out for a long, long time, we'll live in the moment just like you guys."
Nathan smiles beneath his helmet. "Heh, it doesn't matter what species you are or where you come from... in the end, we're more alike than we like to think," he says. "Aw, now look, you're making me act all serious! Dammit, Atana, you're going to lose your snowmobile privileges at this rate!"
Tarkus made it to the top of the roof and drew his mantis, he walks to be over the airlock. He spots Wolfe "Hey Jason, I will be up here looking out."
Nalota nods. "I know, and I'm deeply honored," she says with a smile of her own. "I'm really excited about that, actually, even if I've never practiced with that thing underwater."
Tarkus upon finding the roof somewhat slippery, he uses his mantis as support when walking. Just in case he loses his footing.
Artullin walks over to the airlock and, after it's finished cycling, steps inside. He walks through and pulls off his helmet, his mandibles twitching as he looks to the trio at the table. "Hello, all," he says politely.
Jason glances back over his shoulder and, upon spotting Tarkus, gives him a thumbs up. "Not a bad idea. Just be careful up there." he says, "Probably wouldn't be too much fun to fall and bust your ass." he adds with a smirk.
Jasper goes to respond to Nalota when Artullin speaks up. He swivels a bit in place to look towards the turian. "Hey. Not sure what they've got fer turian food, but make yerself at home." he says with a chuckle.
Yan Sun once again decides not to involve herself in the conversation of the Redrock mercs. There's a spark in her eyes as she spots a crack in the ice that is pushed up. She speeds up and heads towards it, and upon driving off it she lets out a whoop as the snowmobile flies into the air - quickly followed by "Woah! Woah! Oh shit!" as she realizes it's going a lot higher than she was expecting, several meters into the air.
Uvena may be grinning. "I could get more serious and get into why, but uh, let's not," she says. "So, how different are ground vehicles to---" She looks over to Yan's snowmobile, wide-eyed.
Nathan spots Yan as she overtakes and, seeing what she plans, laughs rapturously. "Hold on!" He yells to Uvena as he alters their direction towards the makeshift ramp. He guns the engine, the snowmobile pushing to its limits. "Yaaaaaaaaaahoooooooooooo!" He hits the ramp and launches into the air. And, seeing how it is alot higher than expected, decides to pull off
a quick, yet simple trick. After all, Uvena is preventing him from doing anything too flashy. He simply straightens himself up and releases the handlebars, spreading his arms as he soars. He then quickly sits down and braces himself to the impact of landing.
Tarkus gives a shrug at Wolfe "I am sure, the snow will break my fall." He begins to slowly move to the east side of the prefab, using his mantis as a walking stick. "If I fall off, I will give you a yell." He calls out before he disappears from Jason's sight.
Yan Sun 's snowmobile almost starts to tip over during the slower landing, but she manages to keep it upright. The impact is considerable despite the decreased gravity, and elicits an "Umpf!" and a temporary reduction in speed as she continues, glancing over her shoulder at Nathan's landing.
Jason gives a shake of his head and turns back, setting out to begin a patrol. "Just be careful." he repeats, "We're a lonnnng way from proper medical care."
Uvena squeezes him tightly, and it would probably have hurt if not for the suit of armor. "What the fuck are you doing, Ten?" She leans her head out over his shoulder slightly to see when they land.
Nathan shoots a quick glance over his shoulder. "Brace!" He says before they crash onto the ground. The extra weight leads to increased instability when landing, though he manages to compensate and pull the snowmobile into a skidding stop, shooting up snow in a wide arc as they drift in the snow. He grits his teeth and breathes heavily, before whooping and
Yan Sun makes a sharp turn, kicking up a bunch of snow in the process as she stops some distance ahead and speaks over comms. "Well... that was a terrible idea. Ow."
Tarkus had made it to the east side of the prefab, and had not lost his step so far. His raises his mantis and looks through the scope to see if there are any threats.
Uvena loosens her grip on him once the vehicle stops, then lets out a chuckle. "It's fine, just give me a heads up in advance," she says. "Fair warning, though; you fuck up the landing once, and I'm going to make sure you'll never hear the end of it!" Her tone is light-hearted.
Nathan laughs and waves to Yan in the distance. "You did good!" he announces over comms before turning to look at Atana, making to nudge her playfully in the ribs. "Understood, ma'am!" he says as he snaps off a crisp salute to the woman, wearing a shit-eating grin underneath his helment.
