#ResearchCamp – April 12, 2016

This logfile is imported from aitelogs2 and may contain errors or wrong timestamps.

Not much has happened in the research camp over the past two hours. Dr. Danaria and Dr. Parker are still in the lab, now joined by Dr. T'Solis as well. Dr. D'Kira is outdoors, taking more measurements with her tripod-mounted device. She seems to be focused on the sky to the north, and the sun, which is breaking through the clouds low. Pablo, Harmonia and the vorcha have finally gotten the laser drill set up, the carriage having been (Tyranniac

moved into the middle of the camp and set up facing down at the ice. An expansive holographic display with a number of read-outs and buttons is hooked up to the drill and preparations are being made to begin cutting into the ice. (Tyranniac)

Jason is continuing his patrol, watching the work that's going on around him with mild interest. He would've been checking in with the away-team regularly since their departure and gotten the coordinates of their destination, just to be safe.

Artullin has been continuing his patrol after his break, his drone hovering alongside him.

The away team has remained within contact range.

Nalota is still sitting in the kitchen, not doing anything useful while she awaits further instruction.

Ilyna opens her eyes and turns over, but she doesn't seem to be getting out of bed.

Korio and Jessica are both still in bed. Korio is clearly asleep, but Jessica just has her covers pulled up over her head.

Jasper is still in the kitchen as well. After making another pot of coffee, he noticed a strange buzzing sound during brewing and has made it his mission to get rid of it. The coffee maker is in a ton of pieces on the table in front of him.

Nalota walks over to pour another cup from the pot. "Do you think you can fix it before the pot's empty?" she asks. "Team's not going to be happy if not."

Mana tears her gaze away from the readout of her scanner and then shuts the display down before looking around, and upon spotting Linora keeping an eye on the probe controls, starts heading her way.

Jasper tilts his head to one side then to the other, squinting at the mess of parts. "I don't rightly know." he admits with a shrug as he uses a multi-tool to begin unscrewing.... something? "Sounds like the heater might be strugglin' though! Best ta fix it now before the whole thing goes kaput. No coffee for an hour is better than no coffee for a week!"

Nalota nods, still standing at the counter. "I hope they see things your way," she says. "I do, but overworked scientists... may not. You know what you're doing, right?"

Jasper nods adamantly at the asari. "Of course I do!" he assures her. His gaze returns to the jumble of parts before him and he lets out a deep sigh and shrugs. "Well... how hard can it be, right? I can put a mako together with my bare hands. Coffee maker should be a cinch!"

Nalota grins. "I don't know the first thing about the field of mechanics," she says, turning around, "but pouring hot water through a filter and moving tons of metal forward doesn't sound remotely comparable to me."

Jasper sits back in his seat, eyeballing the parts. "That's where yer wrong." he insists as he reaches for a large cylinder from inside of the coffee maker. "Ya see, it's jus' 'bout understandin' how things work. This feller, for example, sucks all the water up an' heats it up." he says, giving the cylinder a shake. He grabs a tube dangling from the bottom of it and holds it up, "Then it pumps the water through this sucker

right here. See, once ya know how a thing works, the rest jus' falls into place. I ain't seein' nothin' wrong, so I'm startin' ta think it's just a few loose screws causin' a bit a' vibration." He nods sternly, confident that he's narrowed down the issue.

Leonard exits the lab, and upon entering the kitchen he heads immediately for the coffee machine, a blank look on his face. Only upon finding his hand swiping at empty air where the machine used to be does he turn around, and when he notices the mess of parts on the table his eyes are fixed to it. "What have you done?"

Linora nods a couple of times as Mana talks to her, and when the conversation is over she is left standing their pondering whatever was reported while Dr. D'Kira heads back to her scanner. She eventually starts making her way to the group by the drill.

Nalota picks up and hands the pot over at Leonard, who appeared before she could respond. There's at least enough for three cups left in it.

Artullin 's patrol takes him by the drill. He pauses and examines it as his drone zips into the sky, looking around as it continues its programming. "Hmm," he grunts.

Jasper jiggles the cylinder at Leonard with a big smile. "Fixin' it! Will be good as-... no! Better than new! Jus' gimme 'nother 45 minutes or so."

Leonard stares at Jasper as if he's insane. "Wha-... but... the coffee!"

Jasper uses the cylinder to point at the coffee pot Nalota is handing over. "-Is just fine!" he finishes the man's sentence, "Now you jus' pour yerself a cup an' get on back to work. This ol' thing'll be runnin' a marathon by the time yer back."

Nalota is still holding the pot in one hand, her cup in the other. "You'll be the first to know if it doesn't make it," she says.

Leonard narrows his eyes at Jasper and Nalota and then nods, grabbing a cup from the counter and holding it out in the hope that the asari will pour up some coffee. "Sure hope so! The others may not be as understanding as I am!" he says with a grin.

Nalota sighs and pours the coffee. "That's what I said, too," she says. "and so will the next two people stopping by."

Jasper frowns as he begins to reassemble the coffee maker. "Ya'll are worryin' too much. It'll be fine. Besides, it's jus' a coffee maker! If it don't work we could always jus' brew a pot up the ol' fashioned way, right?"

Linora , after talking to Harmonia, starts walking out of the camp, heading to intercept the patrolling Jason.

Artullin continues to examines the drill, watching Linora briefly. He then turns his attention back to the drill for a few more moments.

Jason is successfully intercepted. He pauses in place as he spots the approaching asari and glances over to her. "Professor." he greets.

Leonard nods at Nalota. "Thank you." he says before taking a seat by the table, studying the various components. "Is this what you do to pass the time then? You people must find it dull to have nothing to shoot at." he says to Jasper with a chuckle.

Linora raises a hand in greeting to Jason, and stops when within talking distance. "How goes the patrols? Uneventful, I hope?"

Jasper continues to organize the parts and screw things together. "I'm a tinkerer." he admits with a nod, "Keeps my nerves steady if I've got somethin' to fix. As fer shootin' stuff, I'm pretty sure I can speak fer the whole tribe when I say we prefer it this way. Not that I do much shootin' ta begin with!"

Jason glances off towards the vast expanse and studies it for a moment before he gives a nod. "This place seems dead." he says, returning his attention to the asari. "Just one big floating chunk of ice. Hope you folks didn't come all this way for nothing." he says. "Not that I'm disappointed with how 'uneventful' its been. Just hope it doesn't mean there's nothing of value for your

team."

Nalota puts the pot back on the counter. "You have our support there," she says. "Any sign of the desk lamps is going to cut this entire expedition short, and we'd be leaving a lot of valuable samples and equipment behind."

Leonard sips the coffee and narrows his eyes at Jasper. "Oh, right, you're part of the diving team like Nalota here, aren't you?" he says with a glance at the asari.

Jasper gives a nod, his gaze locked on the appliance in front of him. "Mmhmm." he confirms, "They ain't told me anything 'bout when we'll be headin' down, though. You got any insider secrets fer me?" he asks, casting a sidelong glance at Leonard and wiggling his eyebrows.

Nalota nods. "Unless you take the mech apart right before we need it," she says.

Linora shakes her head with a smile. "That is not a concern. Every bit of data holds value to us, and it is likely that there is more to find under the ice regardless." She glances to the north and then adds. "We may not have quite as much time as we hoped, however. Dr. D'Kira believes that our initial calculations of the length of the day/night cycle of this world are inaccurate. We will be facing sunset towards the end of

our stay."

Jason blinks a couple of times. "Okay...?" he says, not entirely following. "Why would that cut into our time?" A smirk crosses his lips as he shrugs, "Forget to pack flashlights?"

Linora chuckles lightly. "No, the issue is a bit more serious than that. It will get colder as the sun sets. Much colder."

Well yeah, that makes sense... But too cold for us to stay here?

Jason furrows his brow, "Just how cold are we talking...?"

Leonard shakes his head. "Nah, you'll have to ask Harmonia if you want more info on that. Would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous, but I couldn't pilot one of those things... I'll settle for studying anything you bring up!"

Nalota smiles. "I'm really looking forward to it," she says. "There's a lot of waiting, though, and watching him take apart kitchen appliances." She bobs her head towards Jasper, pointing out the obvious.

Jasper continues about his work. "Well, we'll be sure ta try an' find ya some good'uns." he says before glancing to Nalota and pointing at her with his screwdriver. "An' you ain't gotta worry 'bout me yankin' them big ol' things apart unless they start makin' funny noises when they're brewin' a cup of coffee." he says, followed by a chuckle.

Nalota tilts her head. "Is that what you mean by making coffee the old fashioned way?" she asks in jest. "Using the mechs?"

Linora raises an eyebrow. "You seem surprised. We are not equipped for nighttime temperatures. D'Kira is taking additional atmospheric and astronomical measurements to determine more precisely what the impact will be on our schedule, but I thought I should let you know."

Jasper shakes his head. "Oh, I'm onta you! Tryin' a' get all my trade secrets! Uh-uh!" He makes as if locking his lips with a key and pantomimes throwing the key away. "Gonna need a prybar ta get the secret to ol' Jasper's brew!"

Jason sighs and gives a nod. "I appreciate it... But is this something we should be concerned about? I mean, it's pretty damn cold as it is. Even with our hardsuits on. Much worse and it could be dangerous, right?"

Linora nods. "It could, yes. Which is why we will be leaving earlier if necessary."

Leonard sips his coffee, an amused look on his face as he listens to the conversation. "You know, Nalota, I know you're set on the whole biology thing, but I really think you ought to consider a degree in Geology as well. It's a fascinating discipline!"

Jason gives another nod. "Fair enough. Just keep me in the loop, alright? I'd like to make sure my people know what's going in in case we need to bug out quickly."

Linora smiles politely. "Of course." she says, and then nods goodbye before turning to head back to the probe control device mounted near the prefab shelters.

Jason sighs to himself once Linora takes her leave, not particularly excited for the new revelation. He glances back at the researchers and watches them continue about their work for a few moments before continuing the patrol route that he's worn into the snow.

Nalota raises her brows at Jasper. "Well, you got me there," she laughs. "No more trying to steal your secrets. Promise." She takes a sip of her coffee, and walks over to join them at the table. "I'm not too keen on things that don't live, to be honest," she says, "but I'll consider it. It never hurts to pursue more fields, other than financially, where my situation is... less than optimal right now." She puts the cup on the table

and sits down.

There is a loud buzz and then a persistent fizzle as the drill lights up, a red beam starting to burrow into the ice. There is mechanical grinding as the rig starts to move in a circle, making sure the hole being melted is large enough to fit the Triton mechs. Water vapor rises from the shallow hole and is then whisked away by the wind as soon as it emerges.

Jasper gets the cylinder seated in place and moves on to re-attaching the tube to the rest of the assembly. "S'pose we've all got our interests, eh? Fer me it's always been machines. Helped my pa in the garage when I was-..." he pauses and looks up from the coffee maker as he considers it for a moment, "...Hmmm, couldn't a' been more than seven or eight, I guess. Anyway, we worked on restorin' an old car fer a few years. Was

hooked. Knew I'd be doin' it the rest a' my life. Then the Alliance decided to pay me to do it. Whooo, buddy. Good times."

The next couple of hours pass as uneventfully as the last. The drilling goes on, ever slowly. The time would now be equal to night by the Saint Lucia's cycle, although daylight is present still. Much of the research team has gone to bed, with the expections being D'Kira, who remains outside, working, and Pablo, who is monitoring the drill.

Ilyna managed to fall asleep again shortly after she woke a few hours ago, and she is still fast asleep.

Jason is still on his rotation. He gives Tarkus, who had set up his overwatch on the roof hours ago, a thumbs up. In much the same way as he has everytime he's reached this point over the past few hours. He turns his gaze back out to the icy tundra and continues on his way.

Artullin is still patrolling.

Jasper has just managed to get the coffee maker back together, taking a significant time longer than he expected. He places it back up on the counter and plugs it in. "Awright! Moment of truth!" he says aloud, even if nobody is around him anymore as he places the pot beneath the brewer and fills the brewer with coffee. His jabs a finger at the button for it to brew and jumps back a step as he waits to see whether or not he

fixed the noise.

Nalota has gone to sleep much like the rest of the science team, in order to get rested for hopefully anything other than sitting around and being useless.

Harmonia leans out of the small shower, only opening the door partially as she grabs a towel, and her pajamas, before disappearing back into the room and closing the door. A small pool of water is left behind on the floor outside the shower, having dripped from her.

Athassa is not yet asleep, instead sitting in her bunk and reading something on her omni-tool, although her heavy eyelids make it clear she's sleepy.

Pablo glances out at the patrolling guards. He seems like he'd rather be inside like everyone else, but persists in his task of manning the drill, eye moving between the interface and his surroundings.

Korio snaps upward, sitting up straight. Despite the strange sleeping patterns and lack of a real day/night cycle, his internal clock still seems to be working. As it's nearing time for his shift, he swings his legs off the side of his bunk and glances around, curious at the lack of Redrock employees.

Jessica is sprawled across her bed, snoring loudly. She's managed to kick off the covers despite it being cold so that they're draped off the side of the bed and across the floor, only hanging onto the bed by a corner that is still over her head.

Athassa looks up from her omni-tool as Korio sits up, offering a small smile and a wave. "Morning." she says quietly.

Korio bows his head. "Morning." he responds with a chuckle at the sentiment. He seems to already be fully awake and aware. "Quiet-..." he begins before glancing at Jessica. "Mostly quiet." he corrects, "Do you know where the others have went?"

Athassa glances at Jessica as well and gives a light chuckle, not having noticed the snoring due to being focused on her reading. As her gaze returns to Korio she nods. "Repairing broken probes."

Korio seems to find that a sufficient enough answer. "Ah. Have they been gone long?"

Athassa nods again. "About four hours now, I think. I'm sure they'll be back soon."

Korio stands up and reaches out above him, stretching as best as he can in the confined space. "Thank you." he offers, rotating at the waist, "And what of you? Unable to sleep?" he asks, glancing about at the others who are already fast asleep.

Athassa shakes her head. "Oh, no, I just like to do some reading before I sleep." she says with a smile.

Korio glances down at the omni-tool, but respects her personal space and doesn't try to get a better look at what she's reading. "Anything interesting?"

Jason continues about his patrol path until he hears the comms chatter. He leans his head back, staring up at the sky in frustration and cusses to himself before activating comms. "She's a part of the research team. Our job is to keep them safe. So the mission is not complete until she's back here. Stay with her so she can do her job. If things look dangerous, then you get her out of

there by any means necessary. Even if you have to drag her kicking and screaming." His voice picks up volume, even though it's not required for Yan Sun to hear him, "You hear me, Yan Sun? They're going to drag you back by your foot if they have to. Be careful."

Harmonia emerges from the shower in her pajamas, and heads straight for bed, climbing in and pulling the covers over her body to shield from the cold.

Athassa shuts down her omni-tool. "A human classic. Lord of the Rings. It is really quite fascinating."

Korio tilts his head to the side, clearly having never heard of the book. "And what sort of 'rings' do they 'lord' over?" he asks, attempting to make idle chit-chat as he continues to stretch. He offers Harmonia a nod as she appears. "Is it, perhaps, about boxing?"

Harmonia lets out an annoyed grunt at the talking, clearly eager to get to sleep.

Athassa chuckles. "No, it is about magical rings. A fantasy novel. Human fantasy offers some interesting insight into their culture."

Korio doesn't seem particularly bothered by Grumpy McGrumpington. "You seem quite enthralled by human culture." he says, pointing out the obvious from his time around the asari, "May I ask why?" He quickly seems to rethink his words and shakes his head, "Not to say that human culture isn't interesting! It certainly is. I just mean to ask what, specifically, drew you to that particular field of study?"

Ilyna turns in her bed before sitting up. She looks at the blanket in front of her for a few seconds before look around the room. She is quiet.

Athassa smiles, pondering the question. "They're just... a very interesting species. Complex, and so new to the galaxy. Still finding their place."

Korio always the attentive one, takes notice of Ilyna and offers a smile, but doesn't bother her beyond that. "Perhaps. They've done well for themselves thus far. I'm sure they'll do fine."

Athassa nods again. "I am sure of it. The speed at which they have reach such status in the galaxy is nothing short of incredible." she says before letting out a long yawn.

Korio takes her yawn as a sign that he should probably take his leave. "I won't keep you up any longer." he says, "I should begin preparing for my shift anyway. Goodnight, Athassa."

Ilyna makes the bed before walking towards the room's exit, nodding to the people still awake. She does return the drell's smile.

Athassa lets out a tired "Good night..." before lying down in her bed.

Korio exits the room shortly after Ilyna, intent on grabbing a cup of coffee before his shift.

Harmonia seems, for a moment, to relish the lack of chatter, but her frustration returns as Jessica's snoring is made all the more prominent by the lack of other sounds. She climbs back out of her bunk and gives the mercenary a kick in the side before heading back to bed, her expression blank and zombie-like as she lies back down.

Who's shift is it now?

Ilyna enters the kitchen and looks around for any sign of where food could be.

Jessica rolls over in her bed, arms flailing wildly as she untangles the covers from her head. As she spots Harmonia walking away, she glares up at the woman, having guessed that she's the most likely assailant. "What in the fuck is your problem?"

Harmonia states "You're snoring. Stop it." as she lies back down, pulling the covers up.

Korio shrugs as he looks around the kitchen, eyes moving from Jasper who is sitting straight up in his seat and staring straight ahead suspiciously, and to the coffee maker. "I don't particularly know. It was supposed to be you and I with Wolfe. Athassa said a few had to leave camp to fix a probe, so I'm not sure if things have changed. I would assume you and I are still up next in the rotation, however. Wolfe doesn't

appear to be inside."

Jessica sits up in her bed and swings her legs off the side. "So my snoring was bothering you so you decided to, what? Kick me? Really?" she asks quietly through clenched teeth.

Harmonia lets out an "Mhm." before rolling over.

Artullin is still patrolling. Drone, still following.

Jessica stares across the room at the woman, mouth agape at the audacity. "Listen, bitch. If you ever so much as consider touching me again. You're going to pull back a stump. You got it? The fuck is your problem? We're civilized fucking people. We use our fucking words. Fuck."

Harmonia , once again, responds only with "Mhm."

Ilyna nods as she opens the fridge to look over the contents. She had slept since it was possible to sleep in this facility, so she hasn't eaten since breakfast. "I need some time to eat first, though," she says.

Jasper glances at the two, but remains strangely quiet.

Korio makes his way over to the coffee maker and grabs a mug, setting it aside as he prepares to brew a pot, as it's very much empty. "Yes, I should have some food first, as well." he agrees as he taps the button to begin brewing. A few moments later, a loud grinding sound kicks on. It begins brewing, but the noise is a constant, grating, grinding that doesn't let up.

Jasper's eyes go wide and he continues to stare straight ahead. He raises his voice to speak over the sound. "HEY YA'LL. JUS' WAKE UP? GUESSIN' YA'LL GOTTA GO ON PATROL SOON, HUH? PRETTY COLD OUT THERE. MAKE SURE YA BUNDLE UP NICE AN' WARM." he rambles, trying to drown out the noise.

Ilyna raises an eyebrow at the coffee maker, and Jasper's shouting. "What's... going on?" she asks, looking between Jasper and the drell.

Jessica continues to glare at Harmonia. As she hears the mild grinding all the way from the kitchen and Jasper's shouting, she rolls her eyes. "And I get kicked.... The fuck..."

Korio leans over, inspecting the coffee brewer. "There appears to be a problem with the brewer..." he says, looking it over from every angle.

Athassa sits up as she hears Jessica's outburst, staring at her. "Goddess, what are you-..." When Jasper starts shouting her gaze goes to the kitchen. "Wha-..."

Harmonia lets out a loud groan and sits up, glaring around for whatever is causing the disturbance.

Jasper continues to stare straight ahead. "HMMM? NOPE. NOTHIN' WRONG WITH IT. PURRIN' LIKE A WELL MAINTAINED ENGINE, MMHMM." he nods, silently hoping it would just hurry and go quiet, "SOOO DID THE REST OF THE TEAM GET BACK YET? BEEN GONE A LONG WHILE, HUH?"

Ilyna closes the fridge and walks over to the doorway, seeing if there's a way to close it to keep the sound in. "I don't know anything about that," she says. "I just woke up."

Jessica retargets her glare on Athassa. "No, what are you...?" she retorts, not even entirely sure what the asari was going to say, but she'll be damned if she isn't going to get the last word.

There is indeed a door between the kitchen and the bunks.

Athassa blinks, looking in confusion towards the kitchen without paying much attention to Jessica. "What's happening? Do you need help?!"

Korio shuts his eyes as the horrible sound continues to ring out. "No, we are fine." he responds over the loud grinding, "The coffee brewer is just acting up. I apologize for the sound."

Harmonia fumbles for her omni-tool and activates it upon locating the device. Her voice soon comes in over the public channel. "WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT NOISE, STOP IT NOW OR YOU'RE FIRED!"

Leonard stirs in his bed, his sleep being interrupted by all the commotion.

Jasper continues to act as though nothing is amiss, twiddling his thumbs as he looks at everything in the room aside from the coffee maker, Korio or Ilyna.

Ilyna closes the door without saying anything to the grumpy woman. "Goddess," she mutters.

Korio opens his eyes as the noise stops, the coffee pot filled with, what appears to be, normal coffee. "That was.... Not pleasant." he sighs. He pours some coffee into his mug and lifts it up, sniffing it and studying it cautiously.

Harmonia lies back down as soon as the noise stops, trying to get back to sleep.

Jasper sucks in a deep breath, visibly calming as the sound dies down. "...Sooo. Sleep alright?" he asks, forcing a smile as he looks at Ilyna.

Ilyna steps away from the door, returning to the fridge to gather something she can put on a sandwich. "Yeah, I suppose," she says. "I never really sleep well on an off-world trip, though."

Athassa lets out a relieved sigh when the sound stops. She seems to have forgotten about Jessica, and lies back down.

Jasper gives a couple nods. "I hear ya." he says, "Well, I mean I understand... Personally, I could prolly fall asleep just 'bout anywhere. But I could see how it might be rough given our current location." he says with a chuckle before standing back up. "Speakin' of sleep, I should prolly get a lil'. No tellin' when they'll need me in that mech. G'night folks."

Korio blows on his coffee for a few moments before touching his tongue to it to test its taste. He gives a shrug and takes a sip. "Goodnight, Jasper." he offers, slightly surprised that the coffee actually tastes fine, despite the horrendous noise.

Ilyna smiles. "Sleep well," she says. She finds a loaf of bread and starts cutting a few slices off it with whatever serrated knife she could find in the kitchen.
